Many thanks, Tristan, for this lovely cover sent on August 7, 2026, from Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, featuring four stamps that depict very different themes!
The round stamp on the right (1 AZN) comes from a souvenir sheet—part of a series issued on November 19, 2018—dedicated to the architecture of Baku. Specifically, it shows a lion-head sculpture from an elegant public fountain located in the Philharmonic Park (formerly the Governor's Garden), which was built in the heart of the city in the early 20th century.
The stamp at the bottom (0.5 AZN; print run: 300,000) is from a set issued on May 10, 2023, commemorating Heydar Aliyev (1923–2003) on the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Heydar Aliyev was a major Azerbaijani statesman who led the country both during the Soviet era and following its independence, starting in 1993. A central figure in national politics for over three decades, he is regarded as the architect of modern Azerbaijan.
He anchored the nation's economy internationally by signing the "Contract of the Century" in 1994 with a consortium of Western oil companies led by British Petroleum (BP). This strategic decision paved the way for the construction of major oil pipelines connecting Azerbaijan to Europe.
His rule is characterized as authoritarian, marked by strict control over the opposition and the media, though he did introduce certain reforms, such as the abolition of the death penalty in 1998.
The year 2024 has been proclaimed the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" in the Republic of Azerbaijan, under a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev.
Among the announced objectives are: reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030 and by 40% by 2050; increasing the share of renewable energy to 30% of installed electrical capacity by 2030—notably through the commissioning of the Garadagh solar power plant; and designating Karabakh, Eastern Zangezur, and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic as "green energy zones," incorporating the concepts of smart cities and villages.
In this context, Azerbaijan hosted the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku from November 11 to 22, 2024.
The small stamp above (0.5 AZN) is part of a four-stamp series issued on May 22, 2024, dedicated to this "Year of Solidarity for a Green World".
The final stamp above (1 AZN), issued on August 20, 2025, pays tribute to Bakhtiyar Vahabzadeh (1925–2009) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Bakhtiyar Vahabzadeh was one of the most influential poets, playwrights, and public figures in contemporary Azerbaijan. A leading figure in literature and national sentiment, he left his mark on his country's cultural and political history through his socially and politically engaged works—most notably *Gülüstan* (1959), his most famous poem, which addresses the historical division of the Azerbaijani people between Russia and Iran.
His body of work primarily explores themes of freedom, the homeland, and the preservation of the mother tongue.
