Maria Callas en Italie

Maria Callas in Italy

I'm an Italian stamps big fan...their format and design is very characteristic. As in France, Italy often uses line-engraving and big-sized formats for the artistic issues. But in opposition to France, Italian Post Office issues each year a reasonable number of stamps and not many souvenir sheets...
So it's with great pleasure that I published the beautiful letter below, posted 3/11/2007 at Viareggio (region of Lucca, Tuscany). Thank you Jacopo !!
Like most big French cities, some Italian cities have their own philatelic postmark, as the one below representing the Mathild tower, at the seaside. This town is famous for its carnival, as you can see with the picture on the cover !
The 5 commemorative stamps were all issued in 2007.

The 2 stamps on the left have one thing in common : they had no reason to be issued in 2007 !
Indeed, the €1.40 stamp is devoted to the Rome Speleological Club, founded in 1904. The Italian Post had probably missed the opportunity in 2004, the year of its centenary...
This stamp represents a speleologist in a cave with a flying bat curiously represented at the bottom left of the stamp...
The other €0.23 stamp has been issued for the 91st anniversary of the death of Father Lodovico Acernese...He is one of the founders of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception's congregation. He is represented on the stamp (with an impressive beard !) in front of the church to the congregation in Pietradefusi (his hometown), in Campania.
The stamp's face value correspond in no case to any postal rate in Italy ? Stamp can eventually be used as a supplement value...

The 3 se-tenant right stamps have something to do with 2007, phew !
They were issued on October 18, 2007 and pay tribute to Entertainment world's famous people. These 3 stamps were issued in the nice souvenir sheet above.
The mid-stamp represents Maria Callas on the occasion of the 30 years of her death in 1977 (it is not common to find foreign personnalities on Italian stamps...). The "Callas" is an American opera singer (soprano) of Greek origin, born in 1923, who profoundly leaved her mark on the Opera's world in the twentieth century. She is represented on the stamp interpreting "Turandot" in the background.
I admit not knowing the 2 men who surround her... how uncultured I am !
On the left, Beniamino Gigli was an Italian tenor, who died over 50 years ago. His unique tone has made him one of the most popular tenors of the after Caruso. He is represented on the stamp, in the background, in a costume of the lyric opera "I Pagliacci" ("the Clowns") with a curious question-mark on the forehead...
The right stamp commemorates the 100-year of the birth of the Italian actor Amedeo Nazzari. He appeared in a great variety of movies, covering all styles, from comedy to drama with an equal talent. Note his supporting role in "Le Clan des Siciliens" by Henri Verneuil in 1969.

Finally, the last €0.02 stamp is part of the nice definitive series (still in progress ?) representing some portraits of women through the ages.
Nice cover, no ?
