Alþjóðlega heimskautaárið 2007-2008

International Polar Year in Iceland

Merci beaucoup Benedikt :-)
I've already mentioned the International Polar Year, celebrated straddling on 2007 and 2008, in several previous posts on this blog.
Many countries have commemorated this event, but 8 of them (Iceland, Greenland, Canada, United States, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland) have had the good idea to issue in a joint leaflet some nice miniature sheets with 2 stamps each, illustrating different scientific projects in North polar regions.
France, active through its polar expeditions in Antarctica for example, has not strangely seen fit to issue a commemorative stamp...TAAF (French Austral and Antarctic Territories) have done it, phew !
Below, I am very proud to show you the nice letter received recently from Reykjavik with the lovely M/S issued by Iceland. Thank you very much Benedikt :-)

This M/S, issued February 15, 2007, is dedicated to scientific research taking place on the Vatnajökull ("Lake Glacier" in Icelandic) glacier, south-east of the country. With a surface area of 8400 square kilometers, it's the largest glacier in Europe !
The ISK 95 stamp on the right shows a Radio-Echo Soundings equipment to map the landscape beneath the glacier. I assume that these are these maps that are represented in the lower margin of the sheet...
This glacier houses under its icecap six volcanoes whose Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest point of Iceland (2110 metres), and Grímsvötn, represented in eruption on the ISK 75 stamp on the left. This volcano, very controled, has the particularity to erupt about every 10 years...the last one dating back to November 2004, I assume that this is this one that is shown on the stamp ? For the anecdote, this sheet was printed by the famous Dutch Joh. Enschedé Printing Group. By analyzing some other recent Icelandic issues, the least we can say is that Island Post is playing competition since appealed to the Austrian State Printing, Cartor Security Printing (France), Martin Lowe Group (Canada), the Denmark Post...
In all cases, the result is still very careful and very interesting :-)
