150 ans du Club Alpin en Autriche - Premier Jour

150 Years of Austrian Alpine Association - FDC

We know the popularity of winter sports, and skiing in particular, in Austria. The Austrian Post is regularly issuing some stamps devoted to Austrian living ski champions, Olympic champions or winners of the FIS World Cup...
The Alps occupy over 65% of Austrian territory (the same in Switzerland). This is probably to emphasize the importance of this mountain in the life of Austrian people that the Alpine Association was founded in 1862.
The Austrian Post has commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Alpine Association by issuing, on January 12, 2012, a special stamp (€ 0.62).

It is that stamp (print run : 300,000), designed by Robert Fattor, that appears on the nice First Day of Issue souvenir above. Thank you very much Florian :-)
The FDC cancellation, issued in Vienna, is reproducing the official logo of the 150th anniversary of this Austrian Alpine Association, whose emblem (an edelweiss flower) is also present on the stamp.
The purpose of the Alpine Association was originally to spread knowledge about the Alps (through studies and publications), to promote the love of the Alps as well as to make access to the Alps easier for the greatest number.
The Association is now more devoted to the preservation of nature and to the development of leisure and sporting activities (such as climbing featured on the stamp).
Florian has also used a stamp (€ 0.10), issued on August 25, 2007, being part of the definitive set devoted to flowers, Scotch Laburnum (Laburnum alpinum) here.
