Concours postal en Lettonie

Stamp design contest in Latvia

For the first time in its history, the Post of Latvia (Latvijas Pasts) has organized in October 2011, a public stamp design contest devoted to the theme "The place where stories are born".
This contest's purpose was to promote the use of the postage stamp. 412 projects were submitted and 30 were selected by experts in philately and graphic designers.
These 30 stamp projects were then offered to a public vote via Internet and social networks (twitter, facebook...).

The stamp that has won the most votes (752 of 4,503) was issued on January 27, 2012.
It is that stamp, designed by graphic designer and photographer Evita Eidinta, that appears on the First Day of Issue cover above with postmarks from Riga.
Thank you very much Juris :-)

This stamp (L 0.35), with a rather uncluttered design, evokes stone lion statues and the nearby building of the restaurant "Bibliotēka No. 1" located in the Vērmanes garden, the oldest public park in Riga.
Juris has also used two stamps being part of the current definitive series devoted to arms of Latvian cities, Jürmala (2005) and Smiltene (2011) here.
