Dans un message publié récemment sur ce blog, j'évoquais le timbre ci-dessous, émis le 2 août 2014 par la poste française, consacré à la mobilisation générale du 2 août 1914, un jour avant la déclaration officielle de guerre de l'Allemagne à la France...
Le 5 août 1914, les 3 bataillons du 86ème régiment d'infanterie (60 officiers, 197 sous-officiers et 3154 hommes de troupe), basé au Puy-en-Velay (Haute-Loire), quittent cette ville pour rejoindre la 1ère armée en Lorraine, sous les ordres du général Dubail.
Après avoir participé aux batailles d'Ancerviller et de Sarrebourg entre le 10 et le 20 août 1914 (746 soldats perdront la vie), ce 86ème régiment participe, à partir du 21 août 1914, à la bataille de Baccarat (Meurthe-et-Moselle).

On August 5, 1914, the three battalions of the 86th Infantry Regiment (60 officers, 197 noncommissioned officers and 3,154 soldiers), based in the city of Le-Puy-en-Velay (Haute-Loire), left the city to join the 1st Army in Lorraine, under the command of General Dubail.
After participating in the battles of Ancerviller and Sarrebourg between 10 and 20 August 1914 (746 soldiers lost their lives), this 86th Regiment participated, from 21 August 1914, at the Battle of Baccarat (Meurthe-et-Moselle).
En cette journée du 25 août 1914, 670 hommes et 19 officiers du 86ème régiment d'infanterie seront tués, blessés ou portés disparus et, le lendemain, ce régiment ne compte plus que 750 hommes environ et 7 officiers...
Les combats à Baccarat furent particulièrement violents entre les troupes françaises et allemandes, en particulier sur le pont sur la Meurthe (l'objectif était alors de reprendre la ville occupée sur la rive droite).
Le 86ème régiment d'infanterie participera ensuite à la Bataille de la Marne et à la terrible guerre des tranchées...
De nombreux monuments ont été érigés en Lorraine et au Puy-en-Velay pour rendre hommage aux combattants de ce 86ème régiment d'infanterie, en particulier ce 25 août 1914 à Baccarat (comme celui représenté sur l'illustration à gauche sur cette enveloppe ci-dessus, situé au carrefour de Baccarat au Puy-en-Velay).

On this day of August 25, 1914, 670 soldiers and 19 officers of this 86th Infantry Regiment were killed, wounded or missing and the next day, this regiment had only about 750 men and 7 officers...
The fighting was particularly violent in Baccarat between French and German troops, in particular on the bridge over the Meurthe river (the objective was then to take the occupied city on the right bank).
The 86th Infantry Regiment will then participate in the Battle of the Marne and the terrible trench warfare...
Many monuments were erected in Lorraine and Le Puy-en-Velay to pay tribute to the soldiers of this 86th Infantry Regiment, in particular on that August 25, 1914 in Baccarat (such as the one shown on the illustration to the left on this cover above, located at the crossroads of Baccarat in Le-Puy-en-Velay).
