Nelson Mandela, Prix Nobel de la paix en 1993 pour avoir conjointement et pacifiquement mis fin au régime de l'apartheid et jeté les bases d'une nouvelle Afrique du Sud démocratique, s'est engagé dès le plus jeune âge à l'égalité des droits de la majorité de la population noire de son pays.
Malgré 27 ans d'emprisonnement, il a continué à se battre pour une Afrique du Sud non raciste, unie et démocratique.
En 1994, Nelson Mandela a été élu premier président noir d'Afrique du Sud.

À l'occasion de ce 100ème anniversaire, les administrations postales d'Allemagne et d'Afrique du Sud ont mis en circulation, le 12 juillet 2018, un timbre commun qui lui est consacré.
Ce timbre (0,70€ correspondant à un envoi domestique jusqu'à 20g) a été utilisé en 2 exemplaires pour affranchir la jolie lettre ci-dessus envoyée le 1er jour d'émission depuis la ville de Gütersloh (Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie). Merci beaucoup Jens !
J'aime beaucoup ce timbre (conception : Annette Le Fort et André Heers), différent du timbre sud-africain (émis dans un bloc-feuillet), avec ce portrait bienveillant de Mandela et cette mention à gauche reprenant les couleurs du drapeau sud-africain.
A noter que plusieurs pays africains (Algérie, Togo, Tunisie, Niger, Liberia, Gambie) ont également émis cette année un bloc-feuillet commun pour rendre hommage à cette personnalité de 1er plan.
L'Irlande, Monaco, l'Inde ou les Nations Unies (bureau de Genève) ont également émis des timbres consacrés à Mandela cette année.
On the occasion of this 100th anniversary, the postal administrations of Germany and South Africa put into circulation, on July 12, 2018, a joint stamp which is devoted to him.
That stamp (€ 0.70 corresponding to a domestic shipment up to 20g) was used in 2 copies to frank the nice letter above sent the first day of issue from the city of Gütersloh (North Rhine-Westphalia). Thank you very much Jens!
I really like that stamp (design: Annette Le Fort and André Heers), different from the South African stamp (issued in a souvenir sheet), with this benevolent portrait of Mandela and this mention on the left printed with the colors of the South-African flag.
It should be noted that several African countries (Algeria, Togo, Tunisia, Niger, Liberia, Gambia) have also issued this year a souvenir sheet to pay tribute to this leading figure.
Ireland, Monaco, India or the United Nations (Geneva office) also issued stamps devoted to Mandela this year.
