To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of San Marino and the People's Republic of China (which took place on May 6, 1971), the postal administrations of both countries issued a beautiful joint set (consisting of two se-tenant stamps) on May 6, 1996, dedicated to ancient architecture.
On May 6, 1985, China and San Marino signed a reciprocal visa-exemption agreement, which came into effect on July 22 of the same year. San Marino thus became the first country in the world whose citizens, holding ordinary passports, were permitted to travel to mainland China without a visa.
The San Marino postal service printed these two stamps (designed by Tian Liming) in sheets of 20 (10 pairs), as well as in a souvenir sheet—which was used on the cover below, with a postmark dated September 9, 2026, from Dogana. Dogana is the most populous town in the country, located on the northeastern border with Italy. Thank you very much, Salvatore!
Salvatore sent this cover inside another envelope, as the postage paid (1,500 ITL) was insufficient for a standard shipment (B Zone 1) to France—which currently costs €1.35 (2,614 ITL).
The stamp on the right depicts the fortress of Guaita, the oldest (11th century) and largest of the three towers built on Mount Titano in San Marino.
These three peaks each carry the three castles (or towers) that ensured the defense of San Marino, which can be found stylized on the coat of arms of the country.
These towers, like the entire historic center of San Marino, were inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Another World Heritage Site (since 1987), the Great Wall of China, is illustrated on the 2nd stamp of this joint series. I do not know exactly what portion of this wall, this set of military fortifications built, destroyed and rebuilt several times and in several places between the 3rd century BC and the 17th century to mark and defend the northern border of China, is represented on this stamp ...
The Great Wall of China is the largest architectural structure ever built by human beings in length, area and mass.
