Le 4 octobre 1919, la première une du journal "La Montagne" (4 pages) était éditée, incluant une question posée au lendemain de la première guerre mondiale, "Faut-il désarmer l'Allemagne ?" et un premier éditorial intitulé "En avant!".
Le nom de ce journal fait référence aux montagnards, ce groupe de députés de la Révolution française les plus proches du peuple et favorables à la République.
Comme son fondateur, l'avocat, journaliste, député et ministre Alexandre Varenne (1870-1947), "La Montagne" est à ses débuts un journal très engagé politiquement, se présentant comme le quotidien de la démocratie socialiste du Centre...
Cette première une figure sur le timbre (0,88€, tirage : 500000) émis le 7 octobre 2019 (vente générale), consacré au 100ème anniversaire de ce journal et à son fondateur, Alexandre Varenne.
On October 4, 1919, the first front-page of the newspaper "La Montagne" (4 pages) was published, including a question asked the day after the first world war, "Should we disarm Germany?" and a first editorial entitled "Forward!" ("En Avant!").
The name of this newspaper refers to the "Montagnards", the group of French Revolutionary deputies closest to the people and favorable to the Republic.
Like its founder, the lawyer, journalist, MP and Minister Alexandre Varenne (1870-1947), "La Montagne" was in its beginnings a very politically engaged newspaper, presenting itself as the daily newspaper of the socialist democracy of the Center...
This first front-page is reproduced on the stamp (€ 0.88, print run: 500,000) issued on October 7, 2019 (general sale), dedicated to the 100th anniversary of this newspaper and to its founder, Alexandre Varenne.

La vente anticipée de ce timbre avait en effet lieu du 4 au 6 octobre 2019 au siège de "La Montagne", en présence du concepteur, Patrick Dérible, et de la graveuse, Marie-Noëlle Goffin, de ce timbre (cf les signatures sur cette enveloppe).
J'adore le TAD, conçu par Aurélie Baras, évoquant également la une de ce journal avec un portrait d'Alexandre Varenne !
A travers son journal, Alexandre Varenne ne fera jamais la moindre concession sur ses combats républicains et sur son obsession d'une liberté absolue de la presse (une fondation portant son nom a été créée en 1988 pour défendre ces principes).

The preview sale of this stamp was indeed held from 4 to 6 October 2019 at the "La Montagne" headquarters, in the presence of this stramp's designer, Patrick Dérible, and engraver, Marie-Noëlle Goffin (see the signatures on this envelope!).
I love the cancellation, designed by Aurélie Baras, having the shape and format of a newspaper's front-page, with a portrait of Alexandre Varenne!
Through his newspaper, Alexandre Varenne never made any concessions on his republican struggles and his obsession for an absolute freedom of the press (a foundation bearing his name was created in 1988 to defend these principles).
La prévente de ce timbre avait également lieu les 4 et 5 octobre 2019 à Paris (Carré d'Encre), avec le même TAD appliqué sur cet autre pli Premier Jour ci-dessus. Merci beaucoup Joël !
Une autre une de ce journal est reproduite sur ce timbre, datant de 2014 et évoquant en particulier les 8èmes élections européennes (depuis 1979) et la faible participation des électeurs français (pourquoi ce choix de une ?).
Ce timbre est plutôt inédit car la poste française émet très peu de timbres consacrés aux médias...

Another front-page of this newspaper is reproduced on the stamp, dating from 2014 and evoking in particular the 8th European Parliament elections (since 1979) and the low participation of French voters (why this choice of front-page?).
This stamp is rather unusual because the French Post is issuing very few stamps devoted to the theme of mass media ...
