Timbre "170 ans de l'Œuvre d'Orient" sur FDCs de France
Depuis 170 ans, l'Œuvre d’Orient est engagée auprès des chrétiens d'Orient dans 23 pays au Moyen-Orient, dans la Corne de l'Afrique, en Europe Orientale et en Inde.
En temps de guerre comme de paix, elle soutient l'action des évêques, des prêtres et des communautés religieuses qui interviennent auprès de tous, sans considération d'appartenance religieuse.
L'Œuvre d'Orient voit le jour en 1856 dans un contexte historique majeur : la fin de la guerre de Crimée et la signature du traité de Paris qui reconnaît à la France un rôle de protection des chrétiens de l'Empire ottoman. Alors appelée Œuvre des écoles d'Orient, elle est créée à l'initiative de laïcs professeurs en Sorbonne réunis autour du baron Cauchy, pour soutenir la création d'écoles au Liban, convaincus que l'éducation est un levier essentiel pour l'avenir de toute société.
En 1860, après les massacres de chrétiens par les Druzes, l'abbé Charles Lavigerie, premier directeur, recommande d'élargir son champ d'action. Ce sera le début d'une grande histoire de solidarité.
For 170 years, the Œuvre d'Orient has been committed to supporting Christians in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, and India.
In times of war and peace, it supports the work of bishops, priests, and religious communities who reach out to all, regardless of religious affiliation.
The Œuvre d'Orient was founded in 1856 in a pivotal historical context: the end of the Crimean War and the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which recognized France's role in protecting Christians in the Ottoman Empire. Then called the "Œuvre des écoles d'Orient", it was created at the initiative of lay professors at the Sorbonne, gathered around Baron Cauchy, to support the establishment of schools in Lebanon, convinced that education is essential for the future of any society.
In 1860, following the massacres of Christians by the Druze, Father Charles Lavigerie, the first director, recommended broadening its scope of action. This would be the beginning of a great history of solidarity.
Aujourd'hui, l'Œuvre d'Orient, association apolitique, intervient (70 volontaires en mission) auprès de 400 communautés chrétiennes dans 4 domaines : l'éducation, les soins et l'aide sociale, l'action auprès des communautés et la culture et patrimoine.
Parce que l'Épiphanie se confond avec Noël pour les chrétiens orientaux, l'Œuvre d'Orient a placé son 170ème anniversaire sous le signe de La célébration de l'Épiphanie ou l'Adoration des rois mages.
C'est ce que représente l'œuvre (datant de 2024) de l'artiste peintre et sculpteur Augustin Frison-Roche (né en 1987), symbole de la richesse spirituelle orientale et de l'universalité du message qu'elle porte depuis sa fondation, reproduite sur le splendide timbre émis le 13 avril 2026 (vente générale) pour commémorer les 170 ans de l'Œuvre d'Orient.
Ce timbre (1,52€, tirage : 630000), imprimé (partiellement avec une encre dorée) en feuille de 9 timbres, a été utilisé sur les 2 enveloppes illustrées ci-dessus et ci-dessous, avec TADs Premier Jour du 10 avril 2026, respectivement de Metz (57) et Moulins (03). Today, the Œuvre d'Orient, a non-political organization, works with 70 volunteers on missions in 400 Christian communities across four areas: education, healthcare and social assistance, community outreach, and culture and heritage.
Because Epiphany is synonymous with Christmas for Eastern Christians, the Œuvre d'Orient has dedicated its 170th anniversary to the celebration of the Epiphany, or the Adoration of the Magi.
This is what the artwork (dating from 2024) by painter and sculptor Augustin Frison-Roche (born in 1987) represents, a symbol of Eastern spiritual richness and the universality of the message it has carried since its founding, reproduced on the beautiful stamp issued on April 13, 2026 (general sale) to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the Œuvre d'Orient.
This stamp (€1.52, print run: 630,000), printed (partially with gold ink) in a sheetlet of 9 stamps, was used on the two illustrated envelopes above and below, with First Day cancellations dated April 10, 2026, from Metz (57) and Moulins (03) respectively. Many thanks, Olivier and Jean-Claude!
Le TAD a été conçu par Sandrine Chimbaud à partir du logo officiel des 170 ans de l'Œuvre d'Orient, l'illustration à gauche sur ces enveloppes (170 ans au service des chrétiens d'Orient) étant une création du graphiste et illustrateur indépendant Nicolas de Palmaert (né en 1977).
A noter que la prévente de ce timbre avait également lieu à Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Périgueux, Toulouse et Valenciennes.
The postmark was designed by Sandrine Chimbaud based on the official logo for the 170th anniversary of the Œuvre d'Orient. The illustration on the left on these envelopes (170 years in service to the Christians of the East) is a creation of the independent graphic designer and illustrator Nicolas de Palmaert (born in 1977).
To note that the preview sale of this stamp also took place in Paris, Aix-en-Provence, Périgueux, Toulouse, and Valenciennes.
