This Brazilian scientific station is named after the Commander of the Brazilian Navy Luís Antônio de Carvalho Ferraz (1940-1982), hydrographer and oceanographer who played an important role in the Brazilian Antarctic program.
On February 25, 2012, a fire ravaged this station, 70% destroyed and leaving 2 dead and 1 wounded among Brazilian soldiers.
After a contest concerning the choice of architecture, the reconstruction of the station began in 2016 and its inauguration took place on January 15, 2020 (initially scheduled for January 14, 2020 but postponed due to bad weather conditions).
On this occasion, a special stamp (1st class domestic commercial mail) was put into circulation on January 14, 2020.
This stamp (design: Jamile Costa Sallum, print run: 360,000) was used in 2 copies on the cover above, with First Day postmark from this Comandante Ferraz station, sent on September 24, 2020 from São Paulo (SPM = São Paulo Metropolitan, Sé district). Thank you very much Marcelo!
An aerial view of this new station (photograph by the Brazilian Navy) is featured on this stamp, as well as its logo at the top right (also present on the cancellation).
This new station of 4,500 square meters is made up of 17 laboratories and a helipad and can accommodate more than 60 people including scientists who study microbiology, glaciers and climate in particular.
