Nobel Peace Prize and Christmas in Finland

"All conflicts can be settled, and there are no excuses for allowing them to become eternal".
This is what was stated by the Finnish Martti Ahtisaari at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo on last December 10 2008.
This Nobel Peace Prize is an important event in Finland, that has not received a lot of other Nobel Prizes since 1901 : Frans Eemil Sillanpää (Literature in 1939), Artturi Ilmari Virtanen (Chemistry in 1945), Ragnar Arthur Granit (Medicine in 1967), each individually.
Other Finnish have also received a Nobel Peace Prize as member an organization or association (Timo Kattelmäki (UNPF) in 1988, Heikki Ollila (IAEA) in 2005 and Riitta Pipatti (IPCC) in 2007).

Finland Post (Posti), that regularly depicts on stamps some living personalities (sport...), has obviously issued a stamp (not foresee...) commemorating this prestigious Award.
Above, the original card sent to me by the Finnish Post to announce this outstanding issue. The two sides of this card reproduce different Finnish magazines and newspapers cutting issued on October 2008, each evoking the recent Nobel Award to Athisaari.
This commemorative stamp (print run : 700,000), printed by Cartor was issued in sale preview on December 10 2008, the day of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.

Coincidentally, I received yesterday this postcard above stamped precisely with this special €0.80 stamp ! Hannele thank you very much :-)
This card was mailed on December 10 2008, the first day of issue, from the city of Jyväskylä.
Antti Raudaskoski designed the stamp and also the FDC and its cancellation. I should show you that FDC shortly after what Hannele has written above :-)
I love the simplicity of this stamp with a portrait of Ahtisaari on a blue background evoking the United Nations. The words "Nobel Peace Prize" are included on the left side of the stamp in Finnish ("Rauhanpalkinto") and Swedish ("Fredspris") but also in English and German.

Above the other side of this postcard showing Martti Ahtisaari at a press conference after he had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Ahtisaari (born in 1937) was the 10th President of the Republic of Finland (from 1994 to 2000) but also a UN diplomat and a tireless negotiator for peace. He will play a decisive role in many peace negotiations around the world : independence of Namibia, separatist province of Aceh (Indonesia), disarmament of IRA in Ulster, war in Bosnia, Kosovo status...).
This 2008 Nobel prize is a just reward, having already been one of Nobel's favorites in 2005 and 2006...

Above another card received from the Finnish Post, this time to wish me a Merry Christmas :-) Or Hyvää Joulua, as they say over there !
The stamp (1st class, € 0.80) is one of the two Christmas stamps issued on November 6 2008. They are the work of illustrator Julia Vuori, author of many children's books.
This one depicts two squirrels, a hedgehog and a hare making a merry game around a Christmas tree. The postmark is from the Santa Claus' main Post Office, located on the Arctic Circle, 8 km north of Rovaniemi. It represents Santa Claus above a globe on which appears the Arctic Circle ("Napapiiri" in Finnish). This special Santa Claus cancellation appeared in 1950 for the first time and the Post office opened its doors in 1985.
This office receives every year more than 370,000 tourists (90% of whom are foreigners).

Finally above the other side of this card with on top right the 2nd stamp (€0.60) of this Christmas series.
I love the graphics and colors of this stamp showing a large and small bear who have gone to get a Christmas tree in the woods and observing the moon.
This stamp was franked with the pine cone-shaped FDC cancellation of November 6 2008.
By the way, Merry Christmas to all of you !
