Présidence moldave de la CEI

CEI Moldovan Presidency

Not always easy to find our way around all the European regional organizations...
For me, CEI meant in French the Commonwealth of Independent States, created after the breakup of the Soviet Union...
Completely wrong ! CEI is also a anglicism to designate the "Central European Initiative", an organization founded in 1989 and that comprises 18 countries including 9 EU members.
Moldova, which holds the annual rotating presidency of the CEI in 2008, devoted a commemorative souvenir sheet of two stamps about this presidency, issued on November 27 2008.
Sergio thank you so much for this wonderful FDC below :-)

This date of November 27 2008 coincides in fact with the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the CEI countries in Chisinau, capital city of the Republic of Moldova.
On November 28 2008, the day after, took place the annual CEI Summit of Heads of Government.
The CEI is a political, economic, cultural and scientific organization that was founded in 1989 to accompany Balkans and Central European countries in their process of integration of the EU. Today, nine countries outside the EU (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, Croatia, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine) receive much of the technical and financial aid from this organization.
To be complete, the CEI headquarters are located in Trieste, Italy and Romania will be the next CEI president country in 2009.
This sheet of two stamps depicts a map of Europe with the twelve stars referring to the EU's flag, with the flags of the 18 CEI member countries in the margins.
The CEI's logo is also represented on the left stamp and on the FDC cancellation.
But do you know why there are only 10 stars on this logo ??
