Lorsque la Suède est devenue une puissance majeure dans les années 1600, des services de courrier réguliers entre les parties ouest et est du royaume sont devenus nécessaires.
Publiée en 1636, la première ordonnance postale de la reine suédoise Kristina stipulait que les agriculteurs résidents propriétaires fonciers, et non l'État, étaient obligés de transporter le courrier avec l'aide des ouvriers agricoles.
Le 3 juin 1638, la première route postale partait de Stockholm via Grisslehamn à travers la mer d'Åland jusqu'à Eckerö puis les villages d'Emkarby, Finby et Vargata à Vårdö, avant d'atteindre la Finlande avec Turku pour destination.
Cette route prenait 4 à 7 jours mais cela pouvait prendre jusqu'à un mois par vent de face et par mauvais temps, cette traversée étant alors connue comme la voie postale la plus dangereuse du monde (plus de 200 agriculteurs postiers ont perdu la vie).
When Sweden became a major power in the 1600s, regular mail services between the western and eastern parts of the kingdom became necessary.
Published in 1636, the first postal ordinance of the Swedish queen Kristina stipulated that landowning resident farmers, not the state, were obliged to carry the mail with the assistance of farm hands.
On June 3, 1638, the first postal route left Stockholm via Grisslehamn across the Sea of Åland to Eckerö then the villages of Emkarby, Finby and Vargata in Vårdö, before reaching Finland with Turku as destination.
This route took 4 to 7 days but it could take up to a month in headwind and bad weather, this crossing being then known as the most dangerous postal route in the world (more than 200 postal farmers lost their lives).
Depuis 1974, une course de bateaux postaux ("Postal Boat Race") est organisée chaque année au mois de juin à travers la mer d'Åland afin de rappeler cet itinéraire postal historiquement important et rendre hommage à ces fermiers-postiers qui ont transporté le courrier entre la Suède et Åland pendant près de 300 ans.
Cette course est le thème choisi par la poste d'Åland sur son timbre EUROPA émis le 8 mai 2020, consacré aux anciennes routes postales ("Vanhoja postiteitä" en finnois).

Ce timbre (tarif "Världen" ou "Monde" - 2,00€, tirage : 90000) a été conçu à partir d'une photographie de David Lundberg montrant des bateaux participant à cette "Postal Boat Race" en 2019, sur la ligne de départ de Grisslehamn. L'objectif de cette course est de traverser la mer d'Åland le plus rapidement possible, sur une distance de 44 km (entre 3 et 6 heures, en fonction des conditions climatiques).
Since 1974, a Postal Boat Race has been organized each year in June across the Sea of Åland in order to recall this historically important postal route and pay tribute to these postal farmers who conveyed the mail between Sweden and Åland for almost 300 years.
This race is the theme chosen by the Åland Post on its EUROPA stamp issued on May 8, 2020, dedicated to the ancient postal routes ("Vanhoja postiteitä" in Finnish).

This stamp ("Världen" or "World" rate - € 2.00, print run: 90,000) was designed from a photograph by David Lundberg showing boats participating in this Postal Boat Race in 2019, as they set off from Grisslehamn. The objective of this race is to cross the Sea of Åland as quickly as possible, over a distance of 44 km (the crossing takes between 3 and 6 hours, depending on weather conditions).
