Bloc-feuillet "190 ans des courses de trot" sur FDC de France
Le trot attelé est un type de sport hippique dans lequel des chevaux trotteurs tractent un sulky, menés par un driver. Ces chevaux doivent trotter le plus vite possible, pour atteindre la ligne d'arrivée en premier, sans jamais se mettre au galop, sous peine de disqualification.
C'est à l'initiative d'un officier des Haras nationaux, Ephrem Houël, et avec l'aide de la municipalité de Cherbourg, que sont organisées les premières courses au trot en France, en 1836.
Ephrem Houël propose alors d'organiser des courses de chevaux de pays auxquels il impose l'allure du trot afin de donner le spectacle d'une compétition groupée, en évitant ainsi l'effet de dispersion des pelotons de chevaux au galop.
Les 25 et 26 septembre 1836, la municipalité de Cherbourg est donc la première à proposer ce divertissement hippique, attirant d'emblée une foule immense de la ville et des campagnes voisines. La réussite de ces manifestations conduira des villes comme Caen, Dieppe (1837), Saint-Lô, Angers, Boulogne-sur-Mer (1838), Langonnet (1839) et bien d'autres à poursuivre l'initiative.
Harness racing is a type of equestrian sport in which trotting horses pull a sulky, guided by a driver. These horses must trot as fast as possible to reach the finish line first without ever breaking into a gallop; doing so results in disqualification.
The first trotting races in France were organized in 1836 through the initiative of Ephrem Houël, an officer of the National Stud Farms, with the assistance of the Cherbourg municipality.
Houël proposed organizing races for local horses, mandating a trotting gait to create the spectacle of a tight, grouped competition and avoid the scattering effect seen with galloping horse packs.
On September 25 and 26, 1836, the municipality of Cherbourg became the first to host this equestrian event, immediately drawing a massive crowd from both the town and the surrounding countryside. The success of these events prompted cities such as Caen, Dieppe (1837), Saint-Lô, Angers, Boulogne-sur-Mer (1838), Langonnet (1839), and many others to follow suit.
En 1852, on dénombre 26 courses au trot disputées sur le territoire français.
En 1867 paraît le premier bulletin des courses au trot. Véritable journal officiel du trot, il continue à paraître aujourd'hui, chaque semaine.
En 1873, l'hippodrome Paris-Vincennes rassemble plus de 100.000 personnes. En 1920, le désormais illustre Prix d'Amérique (en hommage aux alliés) y est organisé pour la première fois.
Encore aujourd'hui, avec 155 réunions et 1254 courses chaque année, l'hippodrome Paris-Vincennes est le vaisseau amiral de cette discipline du Trot.
Le 15 juin 2026 (vente générale), la poste française a mis en circulation un bloc-feuillet (2,25€, tirage : 200000) consacré au 190ème anniversaire des courses de trot en France.
Conçu par l'architecte du patrimoine Wandrille Thieulin (mise en page : Emmanuel Vedrenne), ce bloc-feuillet a été utilisé sur la lettre ci-dessus avec TAD Premier jour de Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (50 - Manche) daté du 11 juin 2026.
A noter que la prévente de ce bloc-feuillet avait également lieu à Paris et Boissy Saint Léger.
J'aime assez le graphisme de ce timbre (avec ces chevaux stylisés en mouvement) et le contraste du noir et du rouge, l'enthousiasme des spectateurs assistant à ces courses de trot figurant dans les marges.

In 1873, the Paris-Vincennes racecourse drew a crowd of over 100,000 people. In 1920, the now-renowned Prix d'Amérique (named in honor of the Allies) was held there for the first time.
Even today, with 155 race meetings and 1,254 races annually, the Paris-Vincennes racecourse remains the flagship venue for harness racing.
On June 15, 2026 (general sale), the French Post put into circulation a souvenir sheet (€2.25; print run: 200,000) commemorating the 190th anniversary of trotting races in France.
Designed by heritage architect Wandrille Thieulin (layout by Emmanuel Vedrenne), this souvenir sheet was used on the cover above, with First Day cancellations from Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (50 - Manche department), dated June 11, 2026.
It is worth noting that the preview sale of this souvenir sheet also took place in Paris and Boissy-Saint-Léger.
I quite like the stamp's graphic design - featuring stylized horses in motion - and the contrast between black and red as well as the enthusiasm of the spectators watching these trotting races, featured in the margins.
