1er courrier d'Australie !!

First cover from Australia !!

Yeah, everything happens ... even from the other side of the world !
Here is my first letter from Australia, from New South Wales (NSW). Thank you Michael :-)
Note the unusual vertical franking...the letter is maybe gone in the wrong direction in the canceling machine ?
The attractive stamp is part of a series of 6 stamps, issued on March 5, 2007, about some islands of the Australian coasts...the selection had to be difficult !!
The $1.95 stamp represents a view of the Fraser island, in Queensland State (north-east), 300 km north of Brisbane. It is the largest sand island in the world (1630 km2), included in UNESCO World Heritage since 1992. There are at least 40 lakes, including half of all freshwater dune lakes existing in the world !!
The island includes outstanding flora and fauna (230 species of birds, 25 species of mammals, including the famous dingo...).

Michael also sent me the pretty FDC below, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the conquest of space.
This series of 6 stamps was issued on October 2, 2007 and commemorates the principal space events since 1957 :
1957 : Sputnik launch by the Soviets, the 1st artificial satellite.
1965 : Cosmonaut Leonov is the first to walk in space...3 months before the American Ed White.
1969 : Neil Armstrong is the first to walk on the moon. Americans revenge t...
1977 : launch by NASA of the 2 Voyager 1 and 2 probes, to explore our solar system.
1990 : launch of the Hubble Space Telescope, still in office in 2007... he has allowed, among other things, to astronomers to estimate the age of the universe : between 12 and 14 billion years !
1998 : beginning of the construction of the International Space Station (ISS), completed in 2010. 16 countries are cooperating in this project.

It might have been added to this list the year 1961 that saw Gagarin being the first human in space... but it is true that this event has already been widely stamped worldwide in 2006, during the 45th anniversary.
It should be noted that these 6 stamps were also issued in a souvenir sheet. The $1 stamp (Hubble) appears in a larger format than in the series above. Undoubtly a marketing coup !

Finally, France wanted also to take part in this event by issuing in extremis on October 5, 2007, the stamp above ! Stronger than Australia, France commemorates 5 events on a single stamp, who could do better ?
You can recognize the famous Sputnik left, but also the Apollo module, Spot 5 satellite and Ariane 5 and Soyuz launchers. The whole with European map in background :-)
