Tribute to French fighter Jean-Michel Nicolier on postcard from Croatia

Hommage au combattant français Jean-Michel Nicolier sur carte de Croatie 

Le 12 janvier 2026, la poste croate, en collaboration avec le ministère de la Défense de la République de Croatie, a mis en circulation une série de 4 cartes postales commémoratives (0,70€, tirage : 6000 chacune) intitulée "Héros de la Guerre Patriotique" ("Heroji domovinskog rata"), distribuées en priorité aux conscrits dès leur arrivée à la caserne, au début de leur formation militaire de base. 
Ces 4 cartes postales (conception : Alenka Lalić) rendent hommage respectivement à Blago et Robert Zadro, Jean-Michel Nicolier, Andrija Matijaš Pauk et Rudolf Perešin.
Un grand merci Dragan pour l'envoi d'une de ces 4 cartes ci-dessous, le 7 avril 2026 depuis Rijeka, consacrée à Jean-Michel Nicolier (1966-1991).
"Vukovar, c'est mon choix, pour le meilleur et pour le pire", déclarait Jean-Michel Nicolier.
Jeune homme, il quitte la France pour la Croatie ravagée par la guerre en septembre 1991 afin de participer à la défense du pays. Membre du HOS (branche paramilitaire du HSP, le Parti croate du droit), il défend Vukovar, où il est blessé. 
On January 12, 2026, the Croatian Post, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Croatia, put into circulation a series of four commemorative postcards (€0.70, limited edition of 6,000 each) entitled "Heroes of the Patriotic War" ("Heroji domovinskog rata"), distributed primarily to conscripts upon their arrival at the barracks, at the start of their basic military training.
These four postcards (designed by Alenka Lalić) pay tribute to Blago and Robert Zadro, Jean-Michel Nicolier, Andrija Matijaš Pauk, and Rudolf Perešin, respectively.

"Vukovar is my choice, for better or for worse," declared Jean-Michel Nicolier.
As a young man, he left France for war-torn Croatia in September 1991 to participate in the country's defense. A member of the HOS (the paramilitary wing of the HSP, the Croatian Party of Rights), he defended Vukovar, where he was wounded.  

Refusant de quitter la ville avec une équipe de journalistes français, il est transféré de l'hôpital à Ovčara après la chute de Vukovar. Selon les témoignages de survivants, il subit des sévices particuliers de la part de soldats serbes (en particulier de Spasoje Petković, surnommé "Štuka") qui, après l'avoir sauvagement battu, le tuent. Sa dépouille ne sera découverte qu'en 2025 puis inhumée dans le cimetière militaire de Vukovar.
En Croatie, Jean-Michel Nicolier est devenu un symbole de la guerre d'indépendance croate et de la bataille de Vukovar. 
On trouve de nombreux graffitis en son honneur dans toute le pays et la phrase "né Français, mort Croate" est très utilisée pour parler de ce héros national. Il est décoré en 2011 à titre posthume par le président Ivo Josipović.
En septembre 2014, le pont de l'Amitié, un pont sur la rivière Vuka, est renommé "pont Jean-Michel Nicolier", un buste (reproduit à gauche sur cette carte) et une plaque commémorative ont été érigés à l'entrée du pont.
Dragan a utilisé un timbre de complément (7,60 HRK, environ 1€) faisant partie d'une jolie série (4 timbres, conception : Orsat Franković) émise le 20 octobre 2014, consacrée au patrimoine ethnographique croate, en particulier une pièce de broderie de la région de Gorski Kotar ici.
Refusing to leave the city with a team of French journalists, he was transferred from the hospital to Ovčara after the fall of Vukovar. According to survivor accounts, he suffered particularly brutal treatment at the hands of Serbian soldiers (especially Spasoje Petković, nicknamed "Štuka") who, after savagely beating him, killed him. His remains were not discovered until 2025 and were later buried in the Vukovar military cemetery.
In Croatia, Jean-Michel Nicolier has become a symbol of the Croatian War of Independence and the Battle of Vukovar.
Numerous graffiti in his honor can be found throughout the country, and the phrase "born French, died Croatian" is frequently used to refer to this national hero. He was posthumously decorated in 2011 by President Ivo Josipović.
In September 2014, the Friendship Bridge, a bridge over the Vuka River, was renamed the "Jean-Michel Nicolier Bridge." A bust (reproduced on the left on this postcard) and a commemorative plaque were erected at the bridge's entrance.
Dragan used a supplementary stamp (7.60 HRK, approximately €1.00) from a lovely series (4 stamps, designed by Orsat Franković) issued on October 20, 2014, dedicated to Croatian ethnographic heritage, specifically a piece of embroidery from the Gorski Kotar region here.
