Synode de Žilina en Slovaquie

Žilina Synod in Slovakia

From 28 to 30 March 1610 a synod met in the church of the Holy Trinity of Žilina, today known as the Žilina synod.
This synod took place in a context of spreading ideas of the Reformation in the eastern part of Europe during the 16th century.
When the Count Juraj Thurzo became Hungarian Palatine in 1609, a significant proportion of the inhabitants of the current territory of Slovakia was Protestant (Augsburg Confession).
The synod of Žilina, held under the patronage of the Palatine Thurzo allowed the organization and creation of a separate church, the Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession.

The Slovak Post has commemorated the 400th anniversary of this Žilina synod by issuing a beautiful souvenir sheet (mixed offset/intaglio printing), on March 30, 2010, consisting of a € 1.10 stamp.
This sheet is included on the cover above mailed on April 6, 2010 from Bratislava. Thank you very much Robert :-)
This souvenir sheet sums in itself the excellence and reputation of Slovak stamp engraving (Martin Činovský in our case) !
It reproduces the central part of the Thurzo altarpiece "Speculum Justificationis", dating from 1611, an invaluable witness of thoses times.

Here is above a photograph of this monumental wooden altar, originally installed in the chapel of the Orava castle and now kept at the Evangelical Church of Augsburg Confession in Necpaly, a village located in the Žilina Region.
Its form and the repartition of pictures is based on a model from the workshop of the engraver Jost Amman from Nuremberg.
The central part of the altarpiece, the one reproduced on this souvenir sheet, is featuring an Reformation evocation of
excusing the sinful man in front of God. The smaller panels painted on the wings refer to different scenes from the Bible.
A similar synod was held in 1614 in Spišské Podhradie, this time concerning the eastern part of Slovakia. Let's hope that the Slovak Post will also commemorate this anniversary in 2014 with the issue of such a beautiful stamp !
