Hommage à Robert Caldwell en Inde

Tribute to Robert Caldwell in India

Le 7 mai 2010, la poste indienne a émis un timbre à 500p en hommage au missionnaire évangéliste britannique Robert Caldwell (1814-1891).
Ce timbre figure en 2 exemplaires sur le FDC ci-dessous, posté le 17 juin 2010 de Bhubaneswar. Merci beaucoup S. S. Rath :-)
Caldwell arrive à Madras en 1838 à l'âge de 24 ans, alors membre de la société des missionnaires de Londres. Il se passionnera pour le peuple tamoul, sa culture, son art et écrira de nombreux ouvrages en langue tamoul.
On May 7, 2010, India Post issued a 500p stamp in honor of British evangelist missionary Robert Caldwell (1814-1891).

Caldwell arrived in Madras in 1838 at the age of 24, then a member of the London Missionary Society. He will have a passion for the Tamil people, culture, art and wrote many books in Tamil language.

Maîtrisant 18 langues, membre de la Société Royale Asiatique, son oeuvre majeure reste son "Etude comparative grammaticale des langues Dravidiennes ou du sud de l'Inde" publiée en 1856, évoquée dans le fond sur ce timbre.
Les différentes illustrations à gauche sur l'enveloppe évoquent la vie et la mission de Caldwell dans le sud de l'Inde. On y voit deux portraits, à l'âge de 23 ans et à l'âge de 63 ans lorsqu'il fut nommé évêque à Calcutta. Une statue de Caldwell, érigée en 1968 à Chennai, figure au centre.
Sa maison à Thoothukudi ainsi que l'église de la Sainte-Trinité à Idaiyangudi (Caldwell en fut l'architecte et y est inhumé) et le pavillon dans la même ville où Caldwell s'installe à partir de 1841, y sont également représentés ci-dessus.
Speaking fluently 18 languages, member of the Royal Asiatic Society, Caldwell's major work is his "Comparative Grammar of the Dravidian or South Indian Family of Languages" published in 1856, mentioned in the background on this stamp.
The different pictures on the left on this envelope evoke the life and mission of Caldwell in Southern India. There are two portraits at the age of 23 and 63 when he was appointed bishop in Calcutta. A statue of Caldwell, erected in 1968 in Chennai, is featured in the middle.
His house at Thoothukudi and also the Church of the Holy Trinity at Idaiyangudi (Caldwell was the architect and is buried there) and the pastor's bungalow in the same city occupied by Caldwell on his arrival in 1841, are also featured above.
