EUROPA 2022 (Stories and Myths) souvenir sheet on cover from Portugal (Azores)

Bloc-feuillet EUROPA 2022 (Mythes et légendes) sur lettre du Portugal (Açores)

Comme les années précédentes, 3 timbres EUROPA (0,95€) ainsi que 3 blocs-feuillets (2 timbres chacun) ont été mis en circulation le 9 mai 2022 par la poste portugaise (CTT) dont deux incluant les mentions "Açores" et "Madeira", comme de coutume (pour rappel, ces timbres peuvent toutefois être utilisés sur le territoire du Portugal continental).
Le thème choisi par l'association PostEurop pour les timbres EUROPA émis en 2022 est consacré aux mythes et légendes ("Histórias e Mitos" en portugais).
Merci beaucoup Ricardo pour cette jolie lettre envoyée le 7 octobre 2022 depuis la ville de Costa da Caparica, affranchie avec le bloc-feuillet EUROPA (illustration : Jorge Macedo, tirage : 20000, imprimé en Belgique par bpost) concernant les Açores ! 
Ce bloc-feuillet illustre la légende de la Caldeira de Pêro Botelho, un petit conte moral relatant la punition d'un tempérament sulfureux. Il s'agit du nom que les habitants de Povoação, sur l'île de São Miguel, ont donné au fond de la grotte de Furnas, où Pêro Botelho serait piégé depuis des temps immémoriaux. 
As in previous years, three EUROPA stamps (€ 0.95 each) as well as 3 souvenir sheets (2 stamps each) were put into circulation on May 9, 2022 by the Portuguese Post (CTT), two of which including the mentions "Açores" and "Madeira", as usual (as a reminder, these stamps can however be used on the territory of mainland Portugal).
The theme chosen by the PostEurop association for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2022 is devoted to Stories and myths ("Histórias e Mitos" in Portuguese).

This souvenir sheet illustrates the Legend of Pêro Botelho’s Caldera, a little moral tale, recounting the punishment for a sulphurous temper. This is the name that the inhabitants of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel, gave to the bottom of the Furnas cave, where Pêro Botelho would have been trapped since immemorial time.

 

Le silence est ce que Pêro Botelho obtient en retour chaque fois qu'il supplie "Tirem-me daqui!" ("Sortez-moi d'ici!") du fond de cette grotte de Furnas.
Homme d'un caractère déplorable, il avait l'habitude, comme les autres habitants de la région, de faire bouillir l'osier et le maïs dans des caldeiras volcaniques d'eau bouillante. Dans l'une d'elles, qui dégage une forte odeur de soufre, il était cependant plus courant d'utiliser sa boue pour soigner diverses maladies, comme les rhumatismes.
On raconte qu'un jour, alors qu'il s'y rendait pour trouver la matière balsamique, Pêro Botelho perdit pied et tomba dans la caldeira. Il a tenté un appel à l'aide, mais personne ne l'aurait entendu. Et il n'a jamais été revu.
Ensuite, si quelqu'un s'approchait de la cavité chaude et l'appelait, il recevait une bouffée de fumée de pierres, de cendres et de boue en réponse. Outre le plaidoyer plus ou moins récurrent, Pêro Botelho répondrait de manière colérique à toute tentative de dialogue, même de bon cœur. Ainsi, chaque fois que quelqu'un s'approchait de la grotte pour trouver la boue thérapeutique, il avait toujours peur de ce qui pourrait en sortir...
Silence is what Pêro Botelho gets in return whenever he begs "Tirem-me daqui!" ("Get me out of here!") from the bottom of this Furnas cave.
A man of deplorable character, he had the habit, like the other inhabitants of the region, of boiling wicker and corn in volcanic calderas of boiling water. In one of them, which exudes a strong smell of sulphur, it was more common, however, to use its mud to cure arious diseases, such as rheumatism.
It is said that, one day, when going there to find the balsamic material, Pêro Botelho lost his footing and fell into the caldera. He attempted an appeal for help, but no one would have heard him. And he was never seen again.
Then, if someone approached the hot cavity and called out to him, they would receive a puff of smoke from stones, ash, and mud in response. In addition to the more or less recurring plea, Pêro Botelho would respond in an ill-tempered manner to any attempt to engage in dialogue, even when kind-hearted. So whenever someone approached the cave to find the therapeutic mud, they were always afraid of what might come out...
