As promised to you, this article is dedicated to my visit of Mâcon on 28th of March 2009 during the "Salon Philatélique de Printemps" ("Spring Stamp Exhibition").
Mâcon, 36,000 inhabitants, Prefecture of the department of Saône-et-Loire (71), is located in the southern part of the Burgundy region (70 km north of Lyon).

Inhabited since the 2nd century BC on the west bank of the Saône river, in the heart of a wine region (Mâconnais and Beaujolais), this city is worth a detour !

Let's start our Mâcon's trip through the stamps and photographs taken during my visit...

During this national Stamp Exhibition, the first French stamp devoted to this city of Mâcon was issued with its official FDC cancellation on 27th of March 2009.
This stamp above (thank you very much Olivier for this FDC !) reveals a panorama of the city from the other bank of the Saône river with at the foreground, the statue of Alphonse de Lamartine, born in this city in 1790. I'll speak about further.

Pierre Albuisson, graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Mâcon, engraved this beautiful stamp. Pierre Albuisson is also the president of the "Art of engraved stamp" Association whose purpose is to promote the art of engraving in general, line-engraved stamps in particular. This Association was of course represented at this Exhibition.

The FDC cancellation above, also designed by Pierre Albuisson, is depicting the two towers of Old Saint-Vincent.

These two asymmetrical towers are the remains of a former church-cathedral dating from the sixth century. The square base of the two towers is dating from the eleventh century when the upper octagonal part dates back to the thirteenth century.

A set of five Regional prepaid envelopes was also issued at this Stamp Show with a pre-printed stamp showing the same original stamp's design, with no nominal value and without the year 2009, with the words "France Priority Letter" written under the stamp.
Each envelope includes a different illustration, a night view of the St. Laurent bridge and the city on the above one with the two FDC cancellations.

This fortified stone bridge consisting of 12 arches, an historical monument today, is linking the two banks of the Saône river since the eleventh century. It has been redesigned several times and was one of the few bridges in the region not to be destroyed during the 2nd World War.

An ATM stamp (LISA vignette) was also proposed to the public via three vending machines, during the three days of this Exhibition. Here is a specimen above with the current Economic domestic postal rate (€0.51).
This ATM stamp is also depicting a view of Mâcon on the left and the two towers of Old Saint-Vincent on the right. A map of the department of Saône-et-Loire is included in the middle with a wine grape and the location of Mâcon.

A fourth special cancellation was proposed during this exhibition, depicting the famous Mâcon's grape-pickers statue.

Here is above the photograph of this statue from another angle, located on the "La Barre" square.
These two grape-pickers recall the importance of viticulture in this region with a 5,000 hectares vineyard and around 50 million bottles produced annually. You can enjoy great wines, Saint-Véran and Pouilly, or other red or white Mâcon...

The oldest France's national Wines Fair
is organized each year in Mâcon.

The city of Mâcon was the subject of a first stamp in 1990 as part of the EUROPA series devoted to postal buildings. This stamp above (2.30 Francs) does not however mention that the depicted post office is located in Mâcon...

Here is above a photograph of the facade of this building taken during my visit !
For the anecdote, the plans of this Art Nouveau style building, built in 1912, were originally drawn for an Algerian town. On the archways, the wine grapes have replaced the dates clusters !

You can see below more pictures taken during my visit :-)

Above the statue of Lamartine in front of the Montrevel town house (dating from 1750) which houses the town hall of Mâcon since 1792. It was at that time the most magnificent private home of the city.
This renovated bronze statue of the poet, dating from 1873, is located on the Lamartine esplanade on the banks of the Saône river with its romantic garden and some excerpts from the famous Lamartine's poem "The Lake" ("Ô time, suspend your flight...") inscribed in silver letters engraved in the ground !

Behind the Town Hall are pointing the two elegant towers of the St. Peter Church above, dating from 1860.
This neo-Romanesque style Church, designed by architect Berthier, a student of Viollet le Duc, maybe recalls that the Southern Burgundy has a concentration of Romanesque churches among the most important in France...

You can see above maybe the oldest house in Mâcon, called the "House of wood", built between 1490 and 1510.
Located on the Herbs Square, its facade is completely covered with carved wooden decorations, especially statues of humans and apes famous for their bawdy attitudes...

Alphonse de Lamartine (1790-1869) was an important French romantic poet, writer, historian and politician in the 19th-century.
His literary vocation was born during the Restoration period with his collection of poems, "Poetic Meditations" published in 1820.
He then played a key political role after the Revolution of 1848 when he became member of the Provisional Government and Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Above the St. Vincent Cathedral, an historic monument, whose construction was decided after the Revolution and the restoration of worship. Some say that this building exists thanks to the Emperor Napoleon... This cathedral was indeed firstly named St. Napoleon.
On 4th of March 1869 took place in this Church the Lamartine's funeral.
Hoping that you have spent a pleasant Philatelic and tourist moment...
