Nouvelles lettres du Canada !

New covers from Canada !

After Fay Wray, Mary Pickford, Lorne Greene and John Candy in 2006, the Canadian Post issued on June 30, 2008 a second set of four stamps devoted to Canadian actors who have followed the road to fame in Hollywood !
These four actors and actresses are gathered on the souvenir sheet on the beautiful cover below mailed on October 1, 2008 from Springhill (Nova Scotia). Thank you very much Laurie :-)
Note the two handed rectangular cancellations from the Springhill PO whose postal code B0M1X0 was deleted when this letter has passed through Halifax the day after, October 2, 2008, as evidenced by the postal code B3K1T0 on the top automatic cancellation.

Each of four stamps incudes a portrait of the actor/actress with a background reminding his/her career.
From left to right :
-Norma Shearer (1902-1983) nicknamed the "First lady of the talkies" for her role in the movie "Trial of Mary Dugan" (1929). During her career, she won the Oscar for best actress for the film "The divorcee" (1929) and was nominated five times with other films !
The stamp's background evokes an art deco typical scene of her films.
-Chief Dan George (1899-1981), authentic Indian chief, will begin his career at age 60 in the TV series "Cariboo Country". In 1970, his role in "Little Big Man" with Dustin Hoffman, will be worth an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for best supporting role.
His stamp's background evokes a landscape of plains from "Little Big Man".
-Marie Dressler (1868-1934) called "the first female star of film comedy" after her role in "Tillie's Punctured Romance" (1914), considered as the first feature-length comedy ever made. Among her 40 films, she will receive the Oscar for best actress for her role in "Min and Bill" (1930). She will also be the first woman to appear on the cover of Time magazine in 1933.
The background of her stamp shows the tugboat Arthur Foss featured in the film "Tugboat Annie" (1933).
-Raymond Burr (1917-1993), famous worldwide for his roles in TV series "Perry Mason" and "Ironside". In his films, he often performed "heavy" archetypal roles. He also defended many humanitarian and charity causes.
The stamp's background evokes the "Perry Mason" courtroom.
Note that these four stamps were also issued in self-adhesive version in four different booklets of 8 stamps (2 of each) devoted to each actor.

Above a new nice letter from my friend Garnet, mailed in Edmonton on October 8, 2008 :-)
The four stamps are devoted to the international philatelic exhibition CAPEX 87 which took place in Toronto from 13 to 21 June 1987. It was the third edition of this show CAPEX (Canadian Association for Philatelic Exhibitions) after those of 1951 and 1978.
The Canadian Post has chosen to represent four historical post offices among the 140 existing on Canadian territory.
This series was issued in two times with at first the 34c stamp on the left, issued on February 16, 1987, showing the first post office built in Toronto (1833), as it exists today.
The three next stamps were issued on June 12, 1987 and represent the post offices of Nelson-Miramichi (36c) in New Brunswick, Saint-Ours (42c) in Quebec and Battleford (72c) in Saskatchewan.

On June 12, 1987, these four stamps were also issued in the beautiful souvenir sheet above, reminding that this world philatelic exhibition coincided with the centennial of organized philately in Canada, through the founding of the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada in 1887.
Note that the stamps on this souvenir sheet are different from those issued separately : the words "CANADA" and "CAPEX 87" are printed in green on the four stamps and the stamp representing the Toronto post office has now a nominal face value of 36c !

You may have noticed that in addition to the two philatelic postmarks (Edmonton City Hall) affixed on the Garnet's letter, a mechanical cancellation was also applied the same day with the "Support Mental Health" message in French and English.
What a transition (!), Garnet was kind enough to send me the pretty FDC above issued on October 6, 2008 about the last Canadian stamp issue, a permanent stamp (52c) with a surcharge of 10c for the benefit of the Canada Post Foundation for Mental Health. This surcharge will be used for mental-health research and support for patients.
This stamp is unique because it is only the fourth Canadian semi-postal series after those of 1974 and 1976 (Montreal olympics) and 1996 (literacy) !
The stamp shows the silhouette of a woman using a mega-phone to broadcast the plight of people suffering from a mental illness. I find it very successful !
This stamp was issued in a booklet of 10 self-adhesive stamps.
