The French Post has issued in general sale on September 24th 2012 a commemorative stamp (€ 0.60, print run : 2,000,000) devoted to this Memorial. It is that stamp, designed by Marc Taraskoff and engraved by Claude Andréotto, that appears on the First Day Cover below (of September 21) from Paris. Thank you very much Joël :-)
The preview sale of this stamp took also place on 21 and 22 September 2012 at the Foundation of the "Camp des Milles", with the same FDC cancellation.

In this building, a former tile factory, more than 10,000 people were interned from 1939 to 1942. It first served as an internment camp for German nationals, Jews for most of them, some refugees in France who then fled totalitarianism, fanatism and persecution.
After that, the Vichy government interned here more than 2,000 Jews men, women and children who were deported to the extermination camp of Auschwitz, via the other French camps of Drancy and Rivesaltes.
They were part of the 10,000 Jews of the "zone libre" ("free zone"), who, even before the occupation of this area, were delivered to the Nazi by the government of Pétain, and then murdered as part of the "Final Solution".
The history of this Camp des Milles testifies xenophobic and anti-Semitic intolerances that led to the Holocaust, it is what this Memorial should enable to never forget...
