Comme les années précédentes, la poste maltaise a choisi le 9 mai 2017 (Journée de l'Europe) pour émettre sa série EUROPA, dont le thème choisi cette année par PostEurop est consacré aux châteaux.
C'est cette série de 2 timbres qui figure sur le joli FDC illustré officiel ci-dessous avec TAD de la ville de Marsa (située dans la zone intérieure du Grand Harbour). Merci beaucoup Silvan !
Ces 2 timbres (conception : Cedric Galea Pirotta) ont été imprimés chacun en feuille numérotée composée de 11 timbres + 1 vignette, incluant le logo EUROPA et le château concerné.
Pour illustrer ce thème des châteaux, la poste maltaise a plutôt choisi des tours fortifiées construites au 17ème siècle à l'époque des Chevaliers de l'Ordre de Saint-Jean, la Tour Sainte-Agathe à Mellieħa et la Tour Gourgion à Xewkija.
As in previous years, on May 9, 2017 (the Europe Day), the Maltese Post has chosen to issue its EUROPA stamp series, the theme chosen this year by PostEurop being devoted to castles.
It is that series of two stamps which appears on the beautiful illustrated official FDC below with cancellations from the city of Marsa (located in the inner area of the Grand Harbour). Thank you very much Silvan!
These two stamps (design : Cedric Galea Pirotta) were each printed in a numbered sheetlet composed of 11 stamps + 1 coupon, including the EUROPA logo and the castle concerned.
To illustrate this theme of castles, the Maltese Post chose rather fortified towers built in the 17th century at the time of the Knights of the Order of St. John, the St Agatha Tower in Mellieħa and the Gourgion Tower in Xewkija.
La Tour Sainte-Agathe ou Tour Rouge (timbre à 0,59€, tirage : 39600), également représentée sur le TAD et l'enveloppe, est une tour de défense construite en 1647 durant le règne du Grand Maître Lascaris de Castellar, afin de surveiller la baie de Mellieħa (nord-ouest de l'île de Malte).
Le 2ème timbre (2,19€, tirage : 35200) est consacré à la Tour Gourgion, construite en 1690 à Xewkija (île de Gozo) par Giovanni Gourgion.
Construit principalement pour lutter contre les attaques de pirates, ce site fortifié a malheureusement été démoli en 1943 par les forces alliées afin de construire un aérodrome pour préparer l'invasion de la Sicile.
Certains vestiges de cette tour (blasons, inscriptions...) ont toutefois été préservés et exposés aujourd'hui au musée archéologique de Gozo à Victoria.
The St Agatha Tower or Red Tower (€ 0.59 stamp, print run : 39,600), also depicted on the FDC postmark and the envelope, is a defense tower built in 1647 during the reign of Grand Master Lascaris de Castellar, in order to command views over the bay of Mellieħa (northwest of the island of Malta).
The 2nd stamp (€ 2.19, print run : 35,200) is dedicated to the Gourgion Tower, built in 1690 in Xewkija (island of Gozo) by Giovanni Gourgion.
Serving mainly as a fortress against pirate attacks, this site was unfortunately demolished in 1943 by Allied forces to build an airfield to prepare for the invasion of Sicily.
Some remains of this tower (coats of arms, stone inscriptions...) have however been preserved and exhibited today at the Gozo's Archaeological Museum in Victoria.
