The Tang Dynasty (618-907) is often considered the golden age of classical Chinese poetry.
The 4 poems in the spotlight on this series have for thematic fishing, wood-cutting, farming and studying, which were common occupations in traditional society.
The first stamp (NT $ 8) on the above letter illustrates a poem entitled "The Fisherman on the River" by Song Dynasty poet, philosopher and military strategist Fan Zhongyan (989-1052): "Back and forth on the river / The man seeks beautiful bass / I watch the boat / As wind kicks up surf".
The above 2nd stamp (NT $ 8) illustrates a poem entitled "Singing While Cutting Wood on Mt. Lu" by Luo Zhongshu (1156-1229), a Chinese official and major poet of the Song Dynasty: "In autumn, trees fall in the mountains / As the wood cutter makes his daily quest / Through the valleys / His songs resound".
The 3rd stamp above (NT $ 12) illustrates a poem entitled "Pity the Peasants" by the poet, historian and military general of the Tang dynasty Li Shen (died 846): "Hoeing under the midday sun / Sweat drips onto the soil / Who knew that the rice in one’s bowl / Comes grain by grain from such toil?".
The last stamp above (NT $ 15) illustrates a poem entitled "Exhortation to Learning" by Tang dynasty poet and calligrapher Yan Zhenqing (708-785): "From lamp lighting to cock crowing / Those are the best hours for a boy to read / If one does not know hard study when hairs are dark / Regrets will be too late when hairs turn gray".
