"Group of 22" souvenir sheet on FDC from Algeria

Bloc-feuillet "Groupe des 22" sur FDC d'Algérie

Le 25 juillet 1954, dans une villa du Clos Salambier (appelé El Madania aujourd'hui) à Alger, 22 algériens, tous des anciens membres de l'Organisation Spéciale (OS), se prononcent "pour la révolution illimitée jusqu'à l'indépendance totale".
Cette Organisation Spéciale avait été créée en 1947 par un groupe de militants du Mouvement pour le Triomphe des Libertés Démocratiques (MTLD) suite aux massacres de de Sétif, Guelma et Kherrata, des répressions sanglantes qui suivirent les manifestations nationalistes, indépendantistes et anti-colonialistes survenues le 8 mai 1945 dans le département de Constantine pendant la colonisation française.
Cette réunion historique du "Groupe des 22" en 1954 a été considérée comme un tournant historique et décisif dans la préparation de la lutte armée contre la France et par la suite, la déclaration de la "glorieuse Révolution" le 1er Novembre 1954.
On July 25, 1954, in a villa in Clos Salambier (called El Madania today) in Algiers, 22 Algerians, all former members of the Special Organization (OS), declared themselves "for unlimited revolution until total independence".
This Special Organization was created in 1947 by a group of activists from the "Mouvement pour le Triomphe des Libertés Démocratiques" (MTLD) following the massacres of Sétif, Guelma and Kherrata, bloody repressions that followed nationalist, independence and anti-colonialist demonstrations on May 8, 1945 in the department of Constantine during French colonization.
This historic meeting of the "Group of 22" in 1954 was considered a historic and decisive turning point in the preparation of the armed struggle against France and the subsequent declaration of the "glorious Revolution" on November 1, 1954.

 

Le 3 novembre 2021 (vente générale), la poste algérienne a mis en circulation un bloc-feuillet non dentelé (100 dinars), conçu par Ali Mechta, consacré à ce "Groupe des 22".

Ce bloc-feuillet représente, je suppose la villa dans laquelle ce Groupe s'est réuni le 25 juillet 1954, des drapeaux algériens ainsi que les portraits des 22 membres ayant participé à cette réunion : Mostefa Benboulaid, Med Larbi Ben M'hidi, Didouche Mourad, Souidani Boudjemaa, Ben Abdelmalek Ramdane, Badji Mokhtar, Slimane Mellah, Zighoud Youcef, Rabah Bitat, Mohamed Boudiaf, Lakhdar Bentobal, Mohamed Merzouki, Said Bouali, Zoubir Bouadjadj, Mohamed Méchati, Belhadj Bouchaîb, Ilyes Derriche, Abdesslam Habachi, Abdelhafid Boussouf, Amar benaouda, Abdelkader Lamoudi et Athmane Belouizdad.
Parmi ces 22 membres, Mohamed Boudiaf (1919-1992), membre du FLN et l'un des 6 chefs historiques du Comité révolutionnaire d'unité et d'action (CRUA), qui fut élu Président du Haut Comité d'État et chef de l'état en janvier 1992 (et assassiné en juin 1992).

This souvenir sheet represents, I assume the villa in which this Group met on July 25, 1954, Algerian flags as well as the portraits of the 22 members who participated in this meeting: Mostefa Benboulaid, Med Larbi Ben M'hidi, Didouche Mourad, Souidani Boudjemaa, Ben Abdelmalek Ramdane, Badji Mokhtar, Slimane Mellah, Zighoud Youcef, Rabah Bitat, Mohamed Boudiaf, Lakhdar Bentobal, Mohamed Merzouki, Said Bouali, Zoubir Bouadjadj, Mohamed Méchati, Belhadj Bouchaîb, Ilyes Derriche, Abdesslam Habachi, Abdelhafid Boussouf, Amar benaouda, Abdelkader Lamoudi and Athmane Belouizdad.

Among these 22 members, Mohamed Boudiaf (1919-1992), member of the FLN and one of the 6 historic leaders of the Revolutionary Committee for Unity and Action (CRUA), who was elected President of the High Committee of State and Head of State on January 1992 (and assassinated in June 1992).
