"Discovery of Amsterdam Island - 500th anniversary" s/s on FDC from TAAF

Bloc-feuillet "500 ans de la découverte de l'île Amsterdam" sur FDC des TAAF

Dans le cadre de la dernière exposition philatélique Paris-Philex, organisée du 23 au 26 juin 2022 à Paris, l'administration postale des TAAF (Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises) a mis en circulation un intéressant bloc-feuillet consacré au 500ème anniversaire de la découverte de l'île Amsterdam.
Pour rappel, l'île Amsterdam, appelée île de la Nouvelle-Amsterdam jusqu'en 1965, est une petite île française située dans le centre de l'océan Indien, formant avec l'île Saint-Paul, distante de 91 km plus au sud, le district des îles Saint-Paul et Amsterdam, l'un des 5 districts des Terres australes et antarctiques françaises.
Ce bloc-feuillet (1,50€, tirage : 20000), conçu par Raphaële Goineau, artiste peintre originaire de Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, figure sur ce pli Premier Jour avec TAD du district de Saint-Paul et Amsterdam. 
As part of the last philatelic exhibition Paris-Philex, organized from June 23 to 26, 2022 in Paris, the postal administration of the TAAF (French Southern and Antarctic Lands) has put into circulation an interesting souvenir sheet dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Amsterdam Island.
As a reminder, Amsterdam Island, called New Amsterdam Island until 1965, is a small French island located in the center of the Indian Ocean, forming with Saint-Paul Island, 91 km further to the south, the district of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam islands, one of the 5 districts of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands.
This souvenir sheet (€1.50, print run: 20,000), designed by Raphaële Goineau, painter from Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, appears on this First Day cover with postmark from the district of Saint-Paul and Amsterdam.

 

Ce bloc-feuillet représente un portrait de Juan Sebastián Elcano (1476-1526), explorateur et marin basque espagnol qui a découvert cette île Amsterdam le 18 mars 1522 à bord de la Victoria, lors de la première circumnavigation du globe entre 1519 et 1522, dans le cadre de l'expédition commandée à l'origine par Fernand de Magellan.
La caraque Victoria est représentée dans la marge inférieure de ce bloc-feuillet, semble-t-il au niveau de la falaise d'Entrecasteaux (côte sud-ouest de l'île).
Sauf erreur, les marges de ce bloc-feuillet montrent également des albatros d'Amsterdam (Diomedea amsterdamensis) en vol, une espèce endémique de l'île d'Amsterdam, sur la liste des 100 espèces les plus menacées au monde établie par l'UICN.
Une autre espèce emblématique de cette île, officiellement française depuis 1843, le gorfou sauteur (Eudyptes chrysocome), est représentée sur le TAD ainsi que la caraque Victoria. 
This souvenir sheet represents a portrait of Juan Sebastián Elcano (1476-1526), Spanish Basque explorer and sailor who discovered this Amsterdam island on March 18, 1522 aboard the Victoria, during the first circumnavigation of the globe between 1519 and 1522, as part of the expedition originally commissioned by Fernand de Magellan.
The carrack Victoria is featured in the lower margin of this souvenir sheet, apparently at the level of the Entrecasteaux cliff (southwest coast of the island).
Unless I am mistaken, the margins of this souvenir sheet also show Amsterdam albatrosses (Diomedea amsterdamensis) in flight, a species endemic to Amsterdam Island, on the list of the world's 100 most endangered species compiled by the IUCN.
Another emblematic species of this island, officially French since 1843, the southern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome), is represented on the postmark as well as the carrack Victoria.
