Grâce au mouvement artistique appelé "Expressionnisme abstrait" qui s'est développé après la seconde guerre mondiale, un groupe d'artistes américains a révolutionné le monde de l'art et a permis aux États-Unis d'apparaître pour la 1ère fois sur la scène artistique internationale...
Ce mouvement, en vogue jusqu'en 1970, consistait à retranscrire les pensées et les sentiments à partir de formes abstraites et de couleurs très variées.
L'USPS a voulu rendre hommage à de grands peintres expressionnistes abstraits en émettant, le 11 mars 2010, une très jolie feuille composée de 10 timbres autocollants reproduisant des oeuvres majeures de cette époque.

The USPS has paid tribute to some great abstract expressionist painters by issuing, on March 11, 2010, a beautiful pane consisting of 10 self-adhesive stamps reproducing major works of this period.

Les peintures reproduites sur ces 2 timbres sont "The Liver Is the Cock's Comb" (1944) par Arshile Gorky (1904-1948) et "Asheville" (1948) par Willem de Kooning (1904-1997).
Le 3ème timbre à gauche (décathlon) fait partie d'une série de 6 timbres, émis en septembre 1979, pour annoncer les jeux olympiques d'été de 1980 organisés à Moscou.
Suite à l'invasion de l'Afghanistan par l'URSS, le président américain Jimmy Carter annonça en janvier 1980 que l'équipe olympique américaine boycotterait ces jeux. Des millions de timbres furent déjà vendus et l'USPS décida de ne pas retirer cette série de la vente...

Following the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union, U.S. President Jimmy Carter announced in January 1980 that the U.S. Olympic team would boycott these games. Millions of stamps were already sold and the USPS decided not to take off this series...

J'ai déjà évoqué dans un message précédent l'autre timbre à 44c faisant partie d'une série de 4 timbres consacrée à de grands acteurs ayant jouer des rôles de cow-boys dans la 1ère moitié du 20ème siècle, Roy Rogers ici.

This stamp, with a different shape compared with the two above, is reproducing a work entitled "1948-C" (1948) by Clyfford Still (1904-1980).

Ces 10 timbres (du Montana au Dakota du nord) constituent la 4ème partie d'une série "Flags of Our Nation" débutée en 2008. Les 2 dernières séries seront émises en 2011 (des îles Mariannes du nord à Tennessee) et 2012 (du Texas au Wyoming).
Le timbre ci-dessus consacré au drapeau de la Caroline du nord montre également un héron et le phare du Cap Hatteras (1870), le plus haut des États-Unis.
L'autre timbre représente le "Stars and Stripes" avec les "montagnes pourpres" à droite, inspirées par les 1ères lignes de l'hymne patriotique "America the Beautiful" (1895) écrit par Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929)...

These 10 stamps (from Montana to North Dakota) is the fourth part of a series entitled "Flags of Our Nation" started in 2008. The last two series will be issued in 2011 (Northern Marianas through Tennessee) and 2012 (Texas through Wyoming).
The stamp above devoted to the flag of North Carolina is also depicting a heron and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (1870), the tallest in the USA.
The other stamp is featuring the "Stars and Stripes" with the "purple mountain majesties" on the right, inspired by the opening lines of the patriotic song "America the Beautiful" (1895) written by Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929)...
