Le merle noir (Turdus merula) est devenu l'oiseau national de la Suède suite à un sondage réalisé en 1962 par un journal.
Appelé "koltrast" en suédois, cet oiseau est très courant en Suède comme dans le reste de l'Europe, nichant dans les villes, à la campagne et dans les forêts, à l'exception des régions montagneuses.
Cet oiseau est également connu pour son chant mélodieux et à travers une chanson des Beatles ("Blackbird") datant de 1968.
Logiquement, la poste suédoise (PostNord Sverige) a choisi cet oiseau sur son bloc-feuillet EUROPA (2 timbres à 21 SEK) émis le 9 mai 2019 (Journée de l'Europe), dont le thème est cette année les oiseaux nationaux.
