125 ans de cyclisme en Lettonie

125 Years of Cycling sports in Latvia

Merci beaucoup Juris :-)
On August 25, 2011, the preview sale of a new stamp devoted to the 125th anniversary of the Latvian Cycling Federation ("Latvijas Riteņbraukšanas Federācija") was held in the Latvian Sports Museum of Riga.
It is this stamp (0.35 Lats, 400,000 copies, issued in sheet of 10 stamps), not originally scheduled in the 2011 Latvian philatelic program, that appears on the nice official FDC below with also two complement definitive stamps devoted to coats of arms of Latvian cities (Smiltene and Jürmala here).
Thank you very much Juris :-)

The designer of the stamp (and also the envelope), Ģirta Grīvas, has featured a cyclist with the Latvia national team jersey and the emblem of the Latvian Cycling Federation ("LRF").
The origins of cycling in Latvia date back to Tsarist Russia. The first Latvian cyclist could be Eduard Lācer, from Valmiera, who participated in 1890 in a cycling relay between the cities of Tallinn and Riga...
It's worth noting that Latvia has achieved, in recent years, some world interesting results in several cycling disciplines with, in particular, Romāns Vainšteins (road race world champion in 2000) and Māris Štrombergs (Olympic champion in 2008 and World Champion in 2008 and 2010 in BMX cycling).

To celebrate the victory of Māris Štrombergs at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 (the only Latvian gold medal), the Latvian Post had beside issued (on October 24, 2008) the special stamp above in his honor !

Happy to share with you the last three philatelic items I've received in the Czech Post's letter published on this blog on last Saturday.
From 10 to 18 September 2011, Austria and Czech Republic will co-host the 27th European Men's Volleyball Championships, bringing together 16 national teams.
The Czech Post has issued, on August 31, 2011, a special stamp for this occasion. It is this stamp that appears on the official FDC below, with postmark from Prague, one of two Czech cities, with Karlovy Vary, where matches will take place during this competition.

This stamp, designed by Pavel Švejda, a student at the Institute of Art and Design of the University of Plzeň, is featuring an action game between two players, with the blue, white and red colors of the Czech flag.
This is only the third time that the Czech Republic (and before Czechoslovakia) is organizing this European Championship since 1948.
To note that Czechoslovakia had won this competition three times in the 1950s and that France (which will play in Pool C with Italy, Finland and Belgium) is the runner-up team of the last edition in 2009 !

On August 31, 2011, the Czech Post has also issued the two new commemorative postcards above and below.
The first one, designed by graphic artist Jiří Bouda, commemorates the 60th anniversary of the beginning of production of the Czech minicar "Velorex", designed by the brothers Stránský. Approximately 15,000 pieces of this three-wheeled vehicle were produced until 1971.
As the cards issued before, this one includes the microtext "Česká Pošta - PTC - 2011" under the stamp as well as the logo of the Czech Post and a hologram protection's element.
This card, sold Kč 15.00, includes a permanent rate "A" stamp (domestic letter up to 50g, i.e. Kč 10.00 at present).

The second card above, designed by graphic artist Aleš Najbrt, is devoted to a curious "Czech forest in Israel" !
Just after the creation of State of Israel, the idea was launched in Czechoslovakia to finance the planting of a forest in the Israeli Negev desert, near the city of Ber Sheva. This project was later abandoned after the freezing of relations between the two countries before being reborn in 2005 with the planting of the first 10 hectares of trees (from Bohemian forests) !
This card, sold Kč 26.00, includes a permanent rate "Z" stamp (letter up to 20g to non-European coutries, Kč 21.00 currently).

Satellite, Blood donation and Decent work on Argentine stamps

On June 10, 2011, the Argentine SAC-D/Aquarius satellite was launched jointly with the NASA from a US base in California.
This satellite, the fourth developed by the Argentine Space Agency (CONAE), carries seven instruments for environmental research and in particular Aquarius used for the study of ocean salinity.
It is this satellite that is featured on the stamp below ($ 2.50), issued on July 23, 2011. Thank you very much Viviana for this nice letter mailed from Buenos Aires, unfortunately without any cancellation...

Satellite views of Patagonia and a view of the eruption of Chaitén volcano on May 10, 2008, taken by the SAC-C satellite, are included on this stamp.
This new satellite should indeed study the location and evolution of volcanic ash into the atmosphere.
Viviana has also used two other stamps issued in 2011. The $ 2.00's one, issued on June 4, 2011, reminds us the Argentine government's decision to dedicate the year 2011 to Decent Work and the Health and Safety of Workers.
The last stamp ($ 5.00), issued on May 21, 2011, is devoted to the celebration each year, on June 14, of the World Blood Donor Day to honor the millions of people who save lives and improve the health of others by donating blood. This stamp, including the slogan "More blood, more life", depicts a drop of blood on which a transparent varnish has been applied.

170 ans de services postaux à Hong Kong

170 Years of Hong Kong Postal Service

On August 25, 1841, the first post office was opened in Hong Kong, marking the beginning of a postal service in this territory then occupied by the British during the First Opium War...
170 years later (to the day), the Post of Hong Kong has commemorated this anniversary by issuing a very interesting souvenir sheet ($ 10.00) designed by Bon Kwan.
It is this sheet, printed by the Dutch Joh. Enschedé, that appears on the nice official FDC below. Thank you very much Trudy :-)
The stamp included in this sheet has three characteristics : the two embossed mailboxes, the golden nominal value and the central words and the star-shaped perforations on each vertical !

The stamp is divided into two parts each evoking the past and present. A typically British red mailbox (including the monogram of Queen Victoria), used in Hong Kong between 1837 and 1901, appears then to the left while a current version of a green mailbox is depicted on the right.
The old general post office, opened in 1911 (to the left) and the current main post office opened in 1976, are also featured in the background with two examples of postmarks used in 1841 and in force today.
The right margin refers to innovation and the present with this globe and the service brands of Hong Kong Post, particularly the sale of postage stamps !
A hummingbird, a symbol of speed and purpose, is finally also depicted in this margin. This stylized bird is featured on the logo of the Hong Kong Post, included on the FDC cancellation.

Réserve naturelle de Šumava sur bloc tchèque

The Czech Post has started in 2005 (Krkonoše National Park) a series dedicated to the nature protection particularly in the biosphere reserves spread throughout the country.
The sixth and last souvenir sheet (consisting of four stamps + four coupons) of this splendid series has been issued on August 31, 2011.
I was really lucky to receive this sheet and the associated four FDC, in the letter of the Czech Post published yesterday on my blog !
This sheet below is devoted to the protection of fauna and flora of the Šumava National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1990.

This Šumava National Park, one of the most extensive wooded areas of Central Europe, is located in a mountainous region, southwest of the Czech Republic (South Bohemia) at the border with Bavaria and Austria.
Located between 500 and 1,400 meters above sea level, this area is characterized by its forests but also by glacial lakes, peat bogs, rivers (source of the Vltava river) and canyons.
But I let you first admire this beautiful souvenir sheet above, designed by graphic artists Libuše and Jaromír Knotek and some parts of which having been engraved by Martin Srb !

The engraver Martin Srb has also designed the four engravings included on the four official FDC (one for each stamp of the sheet) above and below issued by the Czech Post.
A first example above with this engraving of a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), with the Plešné Lake in the background, on this FDC devoted to the Kč 10.00 stamp on which are depicted a Western Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus), a Ring Ouzel (Turdus torquatus) and a butterfly, a Large Ringlet (Erebia euryale).
To note that the same Capercaillie with also cranberries (Vaccinium vitis idaea) are featured on the FDC postmark issued in the village of Prášily.

A Hazel Grouse (Bonasa bonasia) is shown on the engraving of the FDC above with the Kč 14.00 stamp, the only one of this series to have been issued in a vertical format.
A Moorland Clouded Yellow butterfly (Colias palaeno) and a Narrow-leaved Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza traunsteineri) are depicted on this stamp.
The flower symbol of this Šumava Reserve, the Pannonic Gentian (Gentiana pannonica) is shown on the postmark, with the typic Mount Roklan in the background, issued in the village of Kvilda.

A Moose (Alces alces) is featured on both the engraving of the third FDC above and also on the Kč 18.00 stamp. This species is accompanied on this stamp by a pair of Black Grouses (Tetrao tetrix) and a dragonfly species, the Common Hawker (Aeshna juncea).
A Black Grouse is also featured on the FDC cancellation issued at Stožec.

One of the rarest species living in this Reserve, the Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) is depicted on this last envelope and also on the Kč 20.00 stamp.
A Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) is also shown on both this stamp and the postmark from the village of Borová Lada, with a Fern species, Blechnum spicant, in the foreground.
To note that many other plant and animal species are featured on the four coupons and margins of this souvenir sheet.

Mozart sur une splendide lettre tchèque !

Once again a big thank you to the Czech Post for this new beautiful registered letter mailed in Prague on August 31, 2011 !
Thank you also for all the interesting attached stamps and FDC I'm written about here and in the coming days...
This August 31, 2011, the Czech Post has issued an interesting stamp devoted to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), arguably the greatest composer of all time. Probably to commemorate the 255th anniversary of his birth or the 220th anniversary of his death ?
It is this Permanent stamp ("E" rate, corresponding to a priority letter up to 20g to Europe, currently 20 CZK) which appears in two copies on the letter below.

This stamp, designed by Czech graphic artist Marina Richterová, is depicting Mozart expressively conducting with the original score from the opera "Don Giovanni" in the background. Mozart conducted for the first time this opera, on October 29, 1787, at the Estates Theatre of Prague, which also appears in the lower left part of this stamp. This is also in this theater, the only one left standing where Mozart performed, that the opera "The Clemency of Titus" was created in 1791.
To note that this letter was postmarked with the special cancellation (outstanding in Prague from August 31 to September 9, 2011) devoted to Mozart, featuring a peak in crystal, a symbol of the belonging of the composer to Freemasonry.
I've already mentioned the three other stamps used above, including the 2011 EUROPA stamp, in previous posts on this blog.

I was lucky to receive, inside this letter, the official FDC above devoted to this stamp !
The FDC cancellation features the monogram of Mozart (with the three letters W, A and M).
To note the beautiful engraving to the left (by Miloš Ondráček) evoking the character of Knight Commander, being part of the opera Don Giovanni.

You can see this same Mozart's monogram on the left part of the booklet above in which this stamp was issued (6 self-adhesive stamps).
To note that Mozart, on this stamp, is wearing (on his right wrist) the same crystal as the one appearing on the special postmark on the registered letter above !

To be exhaustive, here is above the other side of this beautiful booklet including the same stamp's design to the right.
To note the text on the left (in Czech and English) stating that Mozart was invited to Prague in 1787 to play his opera "The Marriage of Figaro", created in 1786 in Vienna, and was (as we understand it !) impressed by the beauty of the Czech capital.
We also learn that Mozart has composed his Symphony No. 38 in D major, known as the Prague Symphony, to thank the city and its inhabitants.

20 Years of Moldova's Declaration of Independence

On August 27, 1991, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova officially proclaimed the independence of the country that formerly belonged to the USSR.
20 years later (to the day), the Moldovan Post has issued a special souvenir sheet commemorating this proclamation of independence.
I was very lucky to receive the very interesting "First Day" souvenir below regarding this issue, with cancellation from Chișinău, the capital.
Thank you very much Sergio :-)

This sheet (designed by Vitalie Roşca) consists of a central stamp (L 4.20) and two attached vignettes containing the text of the declaration of independence of Moldova.

The stamp shows the flag of Moldova and the statue of Voivod Stephen the Great and Holy (1457-1504), national hero, a symbol of the country's struggle for sovereignty over the centuries. This bronze statue by sculptor Alexandru Plamadeala was inaugurated in Chișinău in 1928. It was then dismantled and moved several times before being reinstalled at its original place in the late 1990s.
To note also that the original text of the Declaration of Independence was destroyed during the protests that rocked the country in April 2009...
An official ceremony was held on April 26, 2010 attended by 230 members of the first official Parliament elected in 1990 for a session of re-signing of this declaration (the original signatures of the 42 deceased deputies were scanned...).

Sergio was kind enough to send me the card above issued specially for this occasion.
The Coat of Arms of the country, adopted in 1990 and which are also included at the center of the national flag, are featured here.
This coat of arms consists of a golden eagle and a shield depicting a head of aurochs.
To note that the Post of Moldova had already commemorated in 2001 (10th anniversary) and 2006 (15th anniversary) this declaration of independence by issuing special stamps.
The 20th anniversary of the country's admission to the United Nations will also certainly be celebrated in 2012 with an interesting stamp...

I've already mentioned in several previous posts on this blog, the beautiful souvenir sheet, issued by the Moldovan Post on April 9, 2011, devoted to the first four men (two Soviet and two U.S.) having travelled in space in 1961.
The Post of Moldova has put into circulation, on July 21, 2011, a new special cancellation, 50 years to the day after the first space flight of U.S. astronaut Virgil Ivan Grissom (1926-1967).
It is this postmark that was applied on the maxicard above with the stamp being part of the original souvenir sheet. Thank you again Sergio for sending me this card :-)

This special card (the other side being reproduced above) was issued at only 600 copies.
Grissom was the second American astronaut, after Alan Shepard, to travel in space during the Mercury-Redstone 4 mission, on July 21, 1961.
But Grissom will be the first astronaut to fly into space a second time, aboard the Gemini capsule in March 1965.
He died in 1967 in the fire of his ship (Apollo 1 mission) during a pre-launch test.

JMJ 2011 - Timbre commun Espagne/Vatican

WYD 2011 - Spain/Vatican joint stamp issue

It's the Pope John Paul II who, in 1984, had this idea of regular meetings between young Catholics from around the world to stimulate their participation in the Church...
The World Youth Day (WYD) is thus celebrated every year in all the dioceses (on Palm Sunday) and, every 2 or 3 years, a large international gathering is organized in the presence of the pope.
Benedict XVI has thus welcomed the young Catholics this year in Madrid at the occasion of the 26th World Youth Day held from 16 to 21 August 2011, with the theme "Planted and built up in Jesus Christ, firm in the faith" (Letter of St. Paul to the Christians of Colossae - Chapter 2 Verse 7).

After Santiago de Compostela in 1989, it was thus the 2nd time that Spain organized this international event which has brought together nearly 2 million young people.
The postal administrations of Spain and Vatican City have issued a joint stamp for the occasion, reproducing the official logo of this 26th World Youth Day.
It's the Spanish stamp (€ 0.80), issued on July 1, 2011, that appears on the postcard above mailed on August 23, 2011 from San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
Thank you very much Luis :-)

To note that this is not really a joint stamp issue as the Vatican's stamp (€ 0.75) was issued on June 21, 2011...
The logo above, designed by graphic artist José Gil-Nogués, is an allegory of the union of young people worldwide at the foot of the cross, the whole forming the crown of the Virgin of the Almudena, patron saint of Madrid. The crown evokes thus both the "M" of Mary and of the city of Madrid.
See you in 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the 28th World Youth Day !

The other side of this card above shows a splendid view of the royal monastery and site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, from Mount Abantos.
This exceptionally beautiful complex (monastery, museum, palace, library, Pantheon of the Kings, the former residence of the king of Spain), built at the end of the 16th century by Philip II and located 45 km northwest of Madrid, was listed as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1984.

Musée "Rīgas Birža" sur timbre personnalisé letton

"Rīgas Birža" Museum on personalized Latvian stamp

At the occasion of the completion of the renovation of the Riga Stock Exchange ("Rīgas Birža") building, the Latvian Post has issued on August 22, 2011, a series of three "personalized" stamps.
The preview sale of this set took logically place in this building, now housing the Latvian National Fine Arts Museum.
I was lucky to receive the special envelope below mailed during this first day of issue. Thank you very much Juris :-)
The illustration on the cover (printing run : 1,000 copies) and the FDC cancellation reproduce the logo of this "Rīgas Birža" Museum.

The stamp above (0.35 Lats) is depicting a detail of terra cotta motifs used on the floorings of this building (a national monument), built from 1852 to 1855 in a Venetian Renaissance style, symbolized the wealth and abundance...
This Museum offers the public exhibitions and permanent collections, mainly 19th century European paintings, porcelains from the 18th and 19th centuries as well as works of art from the Near and Middle East.
The three stamps being part of this series (issued at 30,000 copies) have been printed by the Austrian State Printing ("Österreichische Staatsdruckerei") as mentioned in the margin of the stamp above.

Vraie fausse émission commune Serbie-Hongrie !

A so-called Serbia-Hungary joint issue !

2011 was declared Franz Liszt ("Liszt Ferenc" in Hungarian) Year in honor of the Hungarian pianist and composer born just 200 years ago.
Franz Liszt (1811-1886), who was both a revolutionary composer, a genius pianist, a conductor, writer, professor of legend but also a philanthropist and humanist, has marked his time.
Emblematic figure of the Romantic musical movement and legend in his lifetime, Liszt can be seen as the first star of the music history !
Many postal administrations have commemorated the bicentenary of the birth of Liszt by issuing special stamps in 2011 : Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Monaco, Vatican, Macedonia, Sovereign Military Order of Malta... and even Mozambique !

The Serbian Post has also issued, on June 14, 2011, a stamp (50 Dinars) devoted to Franz Liszt. It is this stamp that appears on the illustrated envelope above mailed on August 22, 2011 from the town of Pancevo. Thank you very much Zoran :-)
This stamp (featuring a portrait of Liszt at the end of his life), issued in sheet of 8 stamps including a central coupon, is mentioning that it is a joint issue between the Posts of Serbia and Hungary.
But this joint project will never come true as the Hungarian Post has admitted that no negotiations had finally taken place to issue a joint stamp !

The proof is done with the numbered souvenir sheet above finally issued by the Hungarian Post, on August 19, 2011 only !
Not much to do with the Serbian stamp actually :)
To note that the French Post has unfortunately not scheduled any stamp in 2011 dedicated to Franz Liszt, too bad...
Liszt, who has always written and spoken French, had however adopted France and Paris where he had moved from the age of 12 !

Copa America 2011 en Argentine

Copa America 2011 in Argentina

For the ninth time since 1916, Argentina has organized, from 1 to 24 July 2011, the Copa America (43rd edition), the most important football competition in South America.
12 teams, divided into 3 groups (A, B and C), have participated at this Copa America, including two invited Central American nations (Costa Rica and Mexico).
The Post of Argentina has commemorated the organization of this competition by issuing, on June 5, 2011, a very original series consisting of three pairs of triangular stamps !

Merci beaucoup Viviana :-)
Each of the three pairs were devoted to the teams of the three qualifying groups, such as group B above for example with the teams of Paraguay, Ecuador, Brazil and Venezuela.
The top of each of the two stamps is fixed at the center of a round folder detailing a priori the achievements of the teams in this South American competition...
This is one of the two triangular stamps ($ 5.00) of this same group B (Paraguay/Ecuador) that appears on the nice letter below, unfortunately without any cancellation from Buenos Aires...
Thank you very much Viviana :-)

To note that Uruguay has become the country's most successful (15 victories) of the Copa America, winning this 43rd edition in Argentina, beating Paraguay in the final (3-0).
The Post of Uruguay has also celebrated this victory by issuing, on August 11, 2011, an impressive sheet containing 24 stamps !
Viviana has used two other stamps on her letter. The $ 2.00's one, issued on April 16, 2011, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Antarctic Treaty. Argentina was among the first 12 signatory countries. This stamp also evokes the organization of the 34th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, held in Buenos Aires from June 20 to July 1, 2011.
The last stamp ($ 2.50), issued on June 25, 2011, commemorates the 200th anniversary of the inauguration of the Pyramid of May, situated on the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires.
As its name implies, this monument is dedicated to the May Revolution which took place from May 18 to 25, 1810 in Buenos Aires, considered as the starting point of the War of Independence of Argentina. High of nearly 19 meters, this pyramid is crowned by an allegory of Liberty, a work of the French sculptor Joseph Dubourdieu !

Artistes de la chanson sur timbres canadiens

Recording Artists on 2011 Canadian stamps

On June 30, 2011, the Canadian Post has issued its third series devoted to Canadian recording artists. Bruce Cockburn, Ginette Reno, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Robbie Robertson are in the spotlight this year on these four self-adhesive Permanent ($ 0.59) stamps.
It is this complete set that appears on the nice letter below mailed on August 9, 2011 from Calgary, Alberta. Thank you very much Garnet :-)
These four stamps have been issued in CD-shaped booklets of eight self-adhesive stamps (2 stamps each), in a souvenir sheet of four gummed stamps as well as in a gummed sheet of 16 stamps each (a first !).

To note that the four small round stickers stickers to the left on the envelope, are included in the booklets of 8 stamps.
As the eight stamps issued in previous years, a portrait of each artist is featured on these stamps (with the titles of their greatest songs in the background) with also their insignia of the Order of Canada.
Among these four artists, Ginette Reno, the only French-speaking artist of this series, is best known in France through her songs "Les yeux fermés", "Aimez-le si fort" or "Le sable et la mer".
She will know however a success in English in 1971 with her hit "Beautiful Second Hand Man".
The two sisters Kate and Anna McGarrigle have collaborated with the greatest artists, especially The Chieftains, Joan Baez and Gilles Vigneault.
Singer-songwriter Bruce Cockburn is known for his songs evoking important political, social or environmental issues. "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" is one of his most popular songs. Cockburn was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2001.
Songwriter, producer, singer and actor Robbie Robertson became known as guitarist of The Hawks and then The Band with a legendary album "Music from Big Pink". Robertson has also composed music for several Scorsese films. "Broken Arrow", composed in 1987, is one of his best-known songs as a solo artist.

As for almost every edition of the Winter Olympics since the Games held in Innsbruck in 1964, the Polish Post has commemorated the participation of Poland at the Salt Lake City winter games in 2002.
No stamp had been curiously issued for the Games of Calgary in 1988...
It' this stamp (designed by Jacek Konarzewski) devoted to these Games of Salt Lake, issued on February 8, 2002, that appears to the left on the cover below mailed on July 28, 2011 from the town of Tarnobrzeg. Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)
This stamp features four of the nine sports in which the 27 Polish athletes competed in Salt Lake City : Alpine skiing, biathlon, figure skating and ski jumping.

The Polish Post has made a habit of depicting real athletes on its "Olympic" stamps and it is still the case here : the pair of figure skaters Dorota Zagorska and Mariusz Siudek or ski jumper Adam Małysz, a national star in Poland !
This is besides Adam Małysz who has won the only two Polish medals at these Games (1 silver and 1 bronze) becoming the first Polish athlete in history to win two medals during the same games !
The Polish Post has also commemorated this feat by re-issuing this same stamp, on February 22, 2002, with an attached coupon referring to Małysz's two medals.
Kazimierz has also used a stamp ( in its personalized version) being part of a series of four stamps, issued on July 15, 2005, devoted to the theme of roses in the Polish traditional embroidery.
I guess that it's a picture of Kazimierz's grand-daughter that is reproduced on this coupon :-)

Timbre EUROPA 2011 du Liechtenstein

EUROPA 2011 stamp from Liechtenstein

It is a "100% Made in Liechtenstein" stamp that was issued (on June 6, 2011) by this Alpine Principality, as part of the EUROPA stamps devoted to Forests this year !
It is indeed the company Gutenberg AG, located in Schaan, that has printed this stamp (in sheet of 20 stamps) reproducing a work by the Liechtenstein's artist Louis Jäger, from Schaanwald.
It's this stamp that appears on the cover below mailed on August 17, 2011 from the capital, Vaduz. Thank you very much Vural :-)
Louis Jäger has designed a tree, "representing the source of an entire forest and symbolizing the forest as an ecosystem". I find it rather successful !

The forest occupies an important place in Liechtenstein, covering 43% of the territory and consisting of 73% of conifers (mostly spruce) and 27% deciduous trees (beech...).
Vital ecosystem, these forests often act as protective barriers against natural hazards (avalanches, rockfalls, landslides...) in this small mountainous country.
The Principality makes every effort to preserve its forests, a biological protection system, but also to allow the future generations to benefit from this natural resource.
The Post of Liechtenstein had already issued a series of four stamps in 2009, dedicated to the forest and its many advantages.

Histoire des chemins de fer lettons

History of rail transport in Latvia

Merci beaucoup Juris :-)
After steam locomotives in 2009 and 2010, the Latvian Post has issued, on August 5, 2011, the last stamp being part of its series devoted to the history of Latvian Railways.
It is this stamp (0.33 LVL) that appears on the nice First Day souvenir below with special postmarks issued at the Railway Museum of Riga.
Thank you very much Juris :-)

It is this time a wagon, with a unique conical structure, that is depicted on this stamp.
This third class wagon was built in 146 copies by the company Phoenix ("Fēnikss" in Latvian), between 1925 and 1931, in the coastal town of Liepāja.
To note that the stamp is well including the word "Fēnikss" whereas the term "Feniks", with only one "s", is written on the cancellation ??
Juris has also used a stamp (0.16 LVL), issued in 1996 in the series devoted to the 800th anniversary of the founding of the city of Riga. This stamp features a Art Nouveau ("Jūgendstils" in Latvian) architecural detail.
The historic center of Riga is indeed home to the largest concentration of Art Nouveau buildings in Europe !
The vignette to the left was included in the sheets of stamps issued in 2010, devoted to 100th anniversary of the Republic of Latvia, to the country's Coat of Arms here.

As every first Sunday of August since 1965, the 46th edition of the "Fête des Chalands Fleuris" ("Flowery Barges Festival") was held on August 7, 2011 in the commune of Saint-André-des-Eaux (Department of Loire-Atlantique).
At this occasion, a temporary post office proposed a special cancellation including the date of August 7, a Sunday !
It is this postmark that appears on the interesting letter below sent from this event.
Thank you very much François :-)

François has wisely used the stamp, dedicated to this "Fête des Chalands Fleuris", being part of the booklet of 12 stamps (permanent value, priority letter up to 20g), issued on May 30, 2011, about festivals and traditions of the Regions (western France). A second booklet was issued, devoted to festivals of eastern France.
This stamp, designed by Cécile Millet, illustrates this festival consisting of a procession of barges, decorated with thousands of flowers, sailing along the Brière marsh's canals.
Some musical and theatrical performances are also proposed to the public.
Over the years, this festival has become one of the main events of the Guérande's peninsula and of the Brière marsh, in the heart of the regional natural park of Brière.
