Qui se souvient de Martin Nadaud (1815-1898) aujourd'hui ?
Républicain convaincu, il fut député de la Creuse pendant 15 ans et se fit connaître pour son implication dans l'élaboration de lois ayant trait au secteur de la construction et des travaux publics mais aussi à la défense des classes ouvrières, de la protection sociale, de l'enseignement technique ou les accidents du travail...
Les 3 et 4 juillet 2015, la poste française a eu la bonne idée de mettre en vente anticipée un timbre en son honneur à l'occasion des 200 ans de sa naissance sur la commune de Soubrebost (Creuse).

Who remembers Martin Nadaud (1815-1898) today ?
Convinced republican, he was MP representing the department of Creuse for 15 years and became known for his involvement in the development of legislation relating to the construction sector and public works but also to the defense of the working classes, social protection, technical education or work accidents...
On 3 and 4 July 2015, the French Post had the good idea to issue in preview sale a stamp in his honor on the occasion of the 200 anniversary of his birth in the town of Soubrebost (Creuse).

Ce timbre (0,68€, tirage : 1500000), conçu par Stéphane Humbert-Basset et gravé par Claude Jumelet, montre un portrait de Martin Nadaud avec des ouvriers du bâtiment dans le fond.
Martin Nadaud, avant de devenir préfet de la Creuse, député de la Creuse (à partir de 1849) et même membre du conseil municipal de la ville de Paris, fit en effet partie de ces générations d'ouvriers du bâtiment creusois ayant participé à la construction de la France moderne, à Paris (Nadaud y fut maçon près de 20 ans à partir de 1830) ou dans d'autres régions...
Martin Nadaud fut un exemple remarquable de l'autodidacte qui a su acquérir un véritable savoir par ses seuls mérites.
That stamp (€ 0.68, print run : 1,500,000), designed by Stéphane Humbert-Basset and engraved by Claude Jumelet, features a portrait of Martin Nadaud with construction workers in the background.
Martin Nadaud, before becoming Prefect of the department of Creuse, MP of Creuse (from 1849), and even a member of the municipal council of the city of Paris, was actually one of those generations of stonemasons from Creuse who participated in the construction of modern France, in Paris (Nadaud was mason there almost 20 years from 1830) or in other areas...
Martin Nadaud was a remarkable example of the self-educated man who acquired a real knowledge by his own merits.
Lors de la prévente de ce timbre au Carré d'Encre à Paris, Stéphane Humbert-Basset était présent le 4 juillet 2015 et a eu la gentillesse de dédicacer ces 2 enveloppes, avec un dessin de truelle sur la 1ère, une 2ème truelle et une auge de maçon sur la 2ème enveloppe !
Une allusion à Sophie Beaujard est inscrite sur l'enveloppe ci-dessus, qui était également présente au Carré d'Encre ce jour-là pour l'émission d'un autre timbre consacré au 900ème anniversaire de la fondation de la ville d'Haguenau... J'en reparlerai très bientôt sur ce blog !
During the preview sale of that stamp at the "Carré d'Encre" in Paris, Stéphane Humbert-Basset was present on July 4, 2015 and was kind enough to autograph these two envelopes, with a trowel drawing on the first one, a 2nd trowel and a mason trough on the second one !
An allusion to Sophie Beaujard is written on the cover above, who was also present at the "Carré d'Encre" that day for the issue of another stamp devoted to the 900th anniversary of the founding of the city of Haguenau... I will speak about very soon on this blog !
