Pour illustrer son timbre EUROPA dont le thème est consacré cette année aux châteaux, la poste autrichienne a choisi le plus célèbre et le plus grand du pays, le Palais de Schönbrunn ("Schloss Schönbrunn").
Ce timbre (0,68€, tirage : 230000), émis le 9 mai 2017 (Journée de l'Europe), conçu par Marion Füllerer, a été utilisé pour affranchir la jolie lettre ci-dessous envoyée le 7 juin 2017 depuis Vienne. Merci beaucoup Edna !
Le Palais de Schönbrunn, ainsi que ses jardins, est d'après l'UNESCO (site classé au patrimoine mondial depuis 1996) un "site exceptionnel car il constitue l'un des ensembles baroques de son genre les plus imposants et les mieux conservés d'Europe".
To illustrate its EUROPA stamp, devoted this year to the theme of the castles, the Austrian Post has chosen the most famous and biggest castle in the country, Schönbrunn Palace ("Schloss Schönbrunn").
That stamp (€0.68, print run : 230,000), issued on May 9, 2017 (the EuropeDay), designed by Marion Füllerer, was used to frank the nice letter below sent on June 7, 2017 from Vienna. Thank you very much Edna!
Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens are, according to UNESCO (a World Heritage site since 1996), "outstanding as one of the most impressive and well preserved Baroque ensembles of its kind in Europe".
Ce château représente en outre un symbole matériel éloquent de la puissance et de l'influence de la maison des Habsbourg sur une longue période de l'histoire européenne, entre la fin du 17ème siècle et le début du 20ème siècle.
Petit pavillon de chasse à l'origine, Schönbrunn a été reconstruit après sa destruction totale au cours de la dernière attaque turque en 1683 afin de devenir une résidence d'été impériale de la cour.
Œuvre des architectes Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach et Nicola Pacassi, ce château a été fortement réaménagé en particulier pendant le règne de Marie-Thérèse.
Une vue aérienne du château est représentée sur ce timbre ainsi que 2 des éléments principaux des jardins : la fontaine de Neptune et la gloriette (avec ses arcades néoclassiques) dans le fond.

This castle is also a potent material symbol of the power and influence of the House of Habsburg over a long period of European history, from the end of the 17th to the early 20th century.
Small hunting lodge originally, Schönbrunn was rebuilt after its total destruction during the last Turkish attack in 1683 in order to become an imperial summer residence of the court.
Built by architects Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and Nicola Pacassi, this castle was strongly renovated in particular during the reign of Maria Theresa.
An aerial view of the castle is featured on that stamp as well as two of the main elements of the gardens : the Neptune fountain and the Gloriette (with its neoclassical arcades) in the background.
