La poste tchécoslovaque avait déjà émis un timbre en 1988 reproduisant cette même peinture "Sainte Catherine avec un ange" (1580) à l'occasion du 400ème anniversaire de la mort de Paolo Véronèse (Paolo Caliari de son vrai nom), né à Vérone en 1528 et mort à Venise en 1588, considéré comme l'un des grands peintres vénitiens de la Renaissance tardive, avec Titien et Le Tintoret.
Comme en 1988, c'est à nouveau le graveur Miloš Ondráček qui a été sollicité par la poste tchèque pour ce timbre émis le 17 mai 2017, consacré à cette même œuvre d'art de Véronèse, faisant partie des collections du château de Prague.
Plus précisément, la poste tchèque a mis en circulation 2 timbres (32 CZK chacun), une version colorée et une version en noir et blanc, dans un même bloc-feuillet de 4 timbres (2 de chaque).
The Czechoslovak Post already issued a stamp in 1988 reproducing the same painting "St. Catherine with Angel" (1580) on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the death of Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari of his real name), born in Verona in 1528 and died in Venice in 1588, considered as one of the great Venetian painters of the late Renaissance, with Titian and Tintoretto.
As in 1988, it was again the engraver Miloš Ondráček who was solicited by the Czech Post for this stamp issued on May 17, 2017, dedicated to this same work of art by Veronese, being part of the collections of the Prague Castle.
More precisely, the Czech Post has put into circulation two stamps (32 CZK each), a colored version and a black and white version, in a unique miniature sheet composed of 4 stamps (2 of each).
La partie supérieure de ce bloc-feuillet (incluant les 2 timbres + la vignette centrale) a été utilisée à droite sur cette splendide lettre envoyée en recommandé de Prague le 1er jour d'émission. Merci beaucoup Bret !
La galerie de peinture du château de Prague conserve encore quelques-unes des œuvres réunies au 16ème et 17ème siècle par l'empereur Rodolphe II, collectionneur et grand mécène, et en particulier des peintures de cette école de Venise comme ce portrait de l'orfèvre, libraire et antiquaire allemand Jakob König (datant de 1565-1580), également peint par Véronèse, reproduit sur l'autre timbre ci-dessus (25 CZK) émis le 15 mai 2013.
The upper part of this miniature sheet (including the 2 stamps + the central coupon) was used on the right side of this beautiful letter sent by registered mail from Prague on the first day of issue. Thank you very much Bret!
The painting gallery of the Prague Castle still kept some of the works collected in the 16th and 17th century by the Emperor Rudolph II, a great patron and collector, and in particular many paintings of the Venetian School like this portrait of the German goldsmith and antiquarian bookseller Jakob König (circa 1565-1580) also painted by Veronese, reproduced on the other stamp above (25 CZK) issued on May 15, 2013.
Bret a eu la gentillesse de m'envoyer un exemplaire de ce très joli bloc-feuillet ci-dessus, avec cette vignette centrale incluant le nom de Véronèse ("Cagliari Paolo Veronese").
Cette mention manuscrite figurait sur le rapport publié suite à la comparution de Véronèse devant le tribunal de l'Inquisition le 18 juillet 1573, chargé de s'expliquer concernant sa peinture monumentale "La Cène" (Gallerie dell'Accademia à Venise), décriée et accusée d'impiété, rebaptisée "Le Repas chez Levi".
Bret was kind enough to send me also a copy of this very nice miniature sheet above, with this central coupon including the name of Veronese ("Cagliari Paolo Veronese").
This handwritten mention appeared on the report published following Veronese's appearance before the tribunal of the Inquisition on July 18, 1573, in charge of explaining about his monumental painting "The Last Supper" (Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice), decried and accused of impiety, renamed as "The Feast in the House of Levi".
