L'équipe masculine islandaise de handball avait remporté une magnifique médaille d'argent (battue en finale par la France...) lors des jeux olympiques de Pékin en 2008.
C'est sans doute pour leur rendre hommage que la poste islandaise a représenté un joueur de handball sur son timbre unique, émis le 3 mai 2012, consacré aux jeux olympiques de Londres...
C'est ce timbre (tarif permanent pour l'envoi d'une lettre jusqu'à 250g vers l'Europe, soit 580 ISK actuellement), conçu par Björgvin Sigurðsson, émis en feuillet de 10 timbres, qui figure sur la lettre ci-dessous postée le 14 août 2012 de la capitale, Reykjavik.

The Icelandic men's handball team had won a great silver medal (beaten in the final by France...) at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
It is probably in their honor that the Icelandic Post has featured a handball player on its unique stamp, issued on May 3, 2012, dedicated to the London Olympic Games...
It is that stamp (permanent postal rate for a letter up to 250g to Europe, i.e. ISK 580 now), designed by Björgvin Sigurðsson, issued in panes of 10 stamps, that appears on the cover below mailed on August 14, 2012 from the capital, Reykjavik.Thank you very much Benedikt :-)
A noter que le logo officiel de ces jeux de Londres ne figure pas sur ce timbre, uniquement l'emblème du comité olympique islandais, évoquant sans doute un des nombreux volcans du pays, en bas à droite.
La délégation islandaise à Londres, composée de 28 athlètes, était engagée dans 6 sports différents : athlétisme, badminton, handball, judo, tir et natation.
Aucune médaille n'a été remportée et c'est à nouveau l'équipe masculine de handball qui a connu le meilleur résultat avec une 5ème place dans le tournoi olympique (à nouveau remporté par la France !).
Depuis sa 1ère participation aux jeux de 1912, l'Islande a remporté 4 médailles : argent en 1956 (triple saut masculin), bronze en 1984 (judo masculin), bronze en 2000 (saut à la perche féminin) et donc argent en 2008 (handball masculin).
Ce qui n'est pas si mal vu la très faible population du pays !

Since its first participation in the games of 1912, Iceland has won four medals : silver in 1956 (men's triple jump), bronze in 1984 (men's judo), bronze in 2000 (women's pole vault) and silver in 2008 (men's handball).
This is rather a good performance given the very small population of the country !
