On November 11, 2020, the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan had put into circulation a nice series (6 se-tenant stamps) devoted to ancient Chinese painting, in particular to a work by Xu Yang (1712-1777), court painter of Emperor Qianlong (Qing dynasty).
This scroll painting, entitled "Syzygy of the Sun, Moon, and the Five Planets" is on display today at the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

On May 19, 2021, a 2nd series (6 se-tenant stamps) was issued, reproducing another part of the same work, present on this pretty First Day cover, sent from Shilin, one of the 12 districts of the Taiwanese capital where this museum is located. Thank you very much George!
This series (NT $ 8, print run: 650,000 for each stamp), designed by Tseng Kai-chih, was printed (by Southern Color Print Ltd., New Zealand) in a sheet consisting of 2 x 6 stamps (with an illustrated central margin).

On the first day of the first month of the 26th year of Emperor Qianlong (in 1761), the Directorate of the Imperial Observatory observed the astronomical phenomenon of the Sun and Moon both rising together and the Five Planets lined up, an event known as a syzygy.
This astronomical phenomenon foreshadowed a year of peace throughout the country and a bountiful harvest. Painter Xu Yang was then commissioned to make a painting illustrating this august omen.
This work represents civil and military officials entering the courtyard to congratulate the Emperor on New Year's Day as well as people from all over the capital, coming out to greet the New Year.
These 6 stamps illustrate in particular the eastern part of downtown Beijing, with its alleys and courtyards, shops and stalls, streets and crossroads, Dong'an Gate and Donghua Gate.
