Le Monument du Souvenir, communément appelé Gëlle Fra ("Femme dorée") par les luxembourgeois, fut érigé le 27 mai 1923 sur la place de la Constitution dans la ville de Luxembourg, en mémoire des soldats luxembourgeois tombés lors de la Première Guerre mondiale.
Ce monument (architecte : Claus Cito), choisi suite à un concours, est constitué d'un obélisque en granit de 21 mètres de haut avec, à son sommet, la statue dorée d'une femme (3 mètres de haut) qui, à bout de bras, tend une couronne de laurier.
Pour les habitants, la Gëlle Fra était avant tout un symbole de liberté et d'indépendance, raison pour laquelle les troupes d'occupation allemandes l'ont démolie en octobre 1940, la place étant devenue un lieu de manifestation des habitants contre les Nazis. 
Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la statue fut montrée une dernière fois au public en 1955 lors d'une exposition, puis disparut jusqu'en 1981 lorsqu'elle fut retrouvée sous les gradins du stade Josy-Barthel. 
The Monument of Remembrance, commonly called Gëlle Fra ("Golden Lady") by the Luxembourgers, was erected on May 27, 1923 on the Constitution Square in the city of Luxembourg, in memory of the Luxembourg soldiers who fell during the First World War.
This monument (architect: Claus Cito), chosen following a competition, consists of a 21-metre-tall granite obelisk with, at its top, the golden statue of a woman (3 meters high) holding out a laurel wreath as if placing it upon the head of the nation.
For the inhabitants, the Gëlle Fra was above all a symbol of freedom and independence, which is why the German occupation troops demolished it in October 1940, the square having become a place of demonstration of the inhabitants against the Nazis.
After the Second World War, the statue was shown to the public for the last time in 1955 during an exhibition, then disappeared until 1981 when it was found under the stands of the Josy-Barthel stadium.

Une copie de la statue fut remontée sur son obélisque et l'inauguration du monument reconstruit eut lieu le 23 juin 1985, jour de la Fête nationale. La statue originale est exposée au musée à Luxembourg.
La Gëlle Fra a été extraite de son obélisque est envoyée à l'exposition universelle de Shanghai en 2010. Cet envoi en Chine du symbole de la liberté luxembourgeoise fut alors fortement controversé dans la population du pays...
Le 16 mai 2023, la poste luxembourgeoise a mis en circulation un timbre très spécial pour commémorer le 100ème anniversaire de l'inauguration de la Gëlle Fra.
Ce timbre (1€, conception : Weyer Lex + Pit Créations), imprimé en feuillet de 4 timbres par Cartor avec application d'une feuille d'or 22 carats gaufrée, figure sur cette lettre avec TAD Premier Jour (couronne de laurier) de Luxembourg. Merci beaucoup Olivier !
Olivier a utilisé un autre timbre au tarif permanent "E50g" correspondant à un envoi jusqu'à 50g vers l'Europe (1,40€ actuellement). Ce timbre fait partie d'une série courante de 3 timbres (gravés par Martin Mörck) émise le 3 mars 2015 à l'occasion du 60ème anniversaire du Grand-Duc Henri, chef de l'état depuis 2000.
A copy of the statue was remounted on its obelisk and the inauguration of the reconstructed monument took place on June 23, 1985, the National Day. The original statue is on display at the museum in Luxembourg.
The Gëlle Fra was extracted from its obelisk and sent to the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. This shipment to China of the symbol of Luxembourg freedom was then highly controversial in the population of the country...
On May 16, 2023, the Luxembourg Post put into circulation a very special stamp to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of the Gëlle Fra.
This stamp (€1.00, design: Weyer Lex + Pit Créations), printed in a sheetlet of 4 stamps by Cartor with application of an embossed 22-carat gold foil, was used on this cover with First Day postmark (laurel wreath) from Luxemburg. Thank you very much Olivier!
Olivier used another permanent rate "E50g" stamp corresponding to a shipment up to 50g to Europe (currently €1.40). This stamp is part of a definitive series of 3 stamps (engraved by Martin Mörck) issued on March 3, 2015 on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Grand-Duke Henri, head of state since 2000.
