Three new FDC from Finland

Le 6 mai 2009, la poste finlandaise a émis 4 nouvelles séries de timbres. J'ai eu la grande chance de recevoir les 4 FDC associés ! Je vous en présente ici trois, je publierai le 4ème, consacré à la série EUROPA, dans un prochain message.

Le 1er bloc-feuillet ci-dessous est constitué de 5 timbres (tarif 1st class - 0,80€ chacun) consacrés à de jeunes créateurs de mode finlandais ayant connu le succès à l'étranger, à des créations de leur collection Printemps/Été 2009 en particulier.
J'aime beaucoup le graphisme de ce bloc (auteur : Laura Laine) imprimé par le hollandais Joh. Enschedé qui a utilisé un vernis brillant du meilleur effet pour mettre en valeur chaque création !
On 6th of May 2009, the Finnish Post has issued four new series of stamps. I was fortuned enough to receive the associated four FDC ! I'm showing you here three of them, I'll publish the fourth, the EUROPA set, in the next message.

The first souvenir sheet below is constituted of five stamps (1st class rate - € 0.80 each) dedicated to young Finnish fashion designers who have achieved international success, to their Spring/Summer 2009 collection in particular.
I really love the design of this sheet (by Laura Laine) printed by the Dutch Joh. Enschedé which has used a special varnish to emphasize each creation !

Pour les amateurs de haute couture, la robe violette (avec sa coupe "pingouin") à gauche est une création de Tuomas et Anna Laitinen.
La robe rouge à droite a été créée par Jasmin Santanen, qui vit et travaille à Paris où elle a présenté sa nouvelle collection Printemps/Été.
Le sac à main Lumi au milieu a été conçu par Sanna Kantola. La marque Lumi Accessories a été créée à New York avec Bruno Beaugrand il y a 9 ans. Ces sacs Lumi sont vendus dans 25 pays.
La paire de chaussures rouges est l'oeuvre de Minna Parikka, une des plus grandes créatrice de chaussures en Finlande. Ses chaussures très féminines sont vendues dans 10 pays.
Les dernières chaussures, en bas à droite, fabriquées à partir de peau de poisson et de bois de bouleau, sont l'oeuvre de Julia Lundsten. Ses créations sont vendues notamment à Tokyo, New York et Londres.
For the haute couture lovers, the purple dress (with its "penguin" cut) to the left was created by Tuomas and Anna Laitinen.
The red dress on the right was created by Jasmin Santanen, who lives and works in Paris, where she presented recently her new Spring/Summer collection.
The Lumi handbag in the middle was designed by Sanna Kantola. The "Lumi Accessories" brand was founded in New York with Bruno Beaugrand nine years ago. These Lumi bags are sold in 25 countries.
The pair of red shoes is the work of Minna Parikka, one of the most famous shoes designer in Finland. Her very feminine shoes are sold in 10 countries.
The latest shoes, bottom right, made from fish skin and birch wood, are the work of Julia Lundsten. Her creations are sold in the greatest cities including Tokyo, New York and London.

La 2ème série de 5 timbres autocollants ci-dessus nous invite au sauna, une véritable institution sociale et familiale faisant partie intégrante du mode de vie des finlandais.
Le sauna est souvent constitué d'une cabane en bois dans laquelle les finlandais, nus pour des raisons d'hygiène, prennent un bain de chaleur sèche (entre 70 et 100°C) pour leur bien-être et pour éliminer les toxines de l'organisme par transpiration.
Il en existerait près de 3 millions en Finlande pour une population de 5,2 millions d'habitants !
A travers ces 5 timbres, Päivi Vainionpää a voulu montrer l'atmosphère authentique qui règne à l'extérieur et à l'intérieur d'un sauna. Plutôt réussi !
Le rameau constitué de branches de bouleau ("vihta") permet, en se flagellant légèrement, de stimuler la circulation sanguine...
Un léger (et très agréable !) parfum de bouleau se dégage de ses 5 timbres :-)
The 2nd set of five self-adhesive stamps above invites us to the sauna, a social and family institution as part of the Finland's lifestyle.
The sauna is often made of a wooden hut in which the Finnish, naked for hygiene reasons, take a bath of dry heat (between 70 and 100°C !) for their well-being and to eliminate toxins from their body through perspiration.
There are almost 3 million saunas in Finland for a population of 5.2 million inhabitants !
With these five stamps, Päivi Vainionpää wanted to show the authentic atmosphere that prevails on the outside and inside a sauna. Rather successfully !
The branches of birch wood (called "vihta") allows, by flogging body slightly, to stimulate blood circulation...
A slight (and very pleasing !) aroma of birch leaves emerges from these five stamps :-)

Une autre institution finlandaise est évoquée sur cette 3ème série ci-dessus : les Moomins !
Ce carnet, composé de 6 timbres, a également été conçu par Päivi Vainionpää qui a reproduit des dessins originaux de l'auteur finlandaise Tove Jansson (1914-2001) faisant partie des collections de la "Moominvalley" du musée d'art de Tampere, regroupant près de 2000 créations originales mettant en scènes ces gentils trolls ressemblant à des hippopotames.
Exceptionnellement, la prévente de ce carnet a d'ailleurs eu lieu à Tampere (et non à Helsinki). Autre curiosité, l'oblitération "1er jour" n'inclut aucune mention en suédois, 2ème langue officielle du pays...
Les principaux personnages de cette bande dessinée figurent sur ces 6 timbres : Moominmamma, Moominpappa, Moomintroll, Little My, Snork Maiden et Snufkin.
A noter enfin que cette série est déjà la 8ème consacrée aux Moomins émise par la poste finlandaise depuis 1992...

This booklet, consisting of six stamps, was also designed by Päivi Vainionpää who has reproduced some original drawings by the Finnish author Tove Jansson (1914-2001) from the collections of the "Moominvalley" of the Tampere Art Museum, containing almost 2,000 original works featuring these trolls looking like hippos.
Exceptionally, the preview sale of this booklet took place in Tampere (not Helsinki). Another curiosity, the FDC cancellation does not include any translation in Swedish, the 2nd official language of the country...
The main characters of this comic strip appear on these six stamps : Moominmamma, Moominpappa, Moomintroll, Little My, the Snork Maiden and Snufkin.
It's worth noting that this series is already the eighth one devoted to Moomins issued by Finland Post since 1992...

Nouvelle lettre impressionnante du Canada !

A new crazy cover from Canada !

Mon ami Garnet m'a encore surpris avec cette nouvelle lettre très impressionnante du Canada, postée le 27 avril 2009 du bureau de poste Glenwood (T5P3Z0) à Edmonton (Alberta) !

Les 17 timbres sur cette enveloppe sont tous consacrés à des personnalités canadiennes qui se sont distinguées dans des domaines très différents.
Les 2 timbres à 39c en bas ont été émis le 2 mars 1990 pour commémorer les 100 ans de la naissance du chirurgien Norman Bethune (1890-1939). Émission commune avec la Chine.
Chaque timbre est composé d'un portrait et d'une intervention chirurgicale, au Canada et en Chine. Bethune fut un éminent spécialiste du traitement de la tuberculose et développa de nombreux instruments de chirurgie. Bethune est connu en Chine pour avoir été chirurgien de campagne avec l'Armée de la 8ème route de Mao Zedong entre 1937 et 1939. Il mourut de septicémie en Chine pendant l'opération d'un soldat chinois. Mao lui rendit hommage en publiant un essai intitulé "A la mémoire de Norman Bethune"...

The 17 stamps on this letter are all dedicated to Canadian personalities who have distinguished themselves in very different fields.
The two 39c stamps in the bottom were issued on 2th of March 1990 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the surgeon Norman Bethune (1890-1939). A joint issue with China.
Each stamp is composed of a portrait and surgery in Canada and China. Bethune was an eminent specialist in the treatment of tuberculosis and has developed many surgical instruments. Bethune is known in China for having been a field surgeon with the 8th route Army of Mao Zedong from 1937 to 1939. He died of septicemia in China during the operation of a Chinese soldier. Mao paid him tribute by publishing an Essay entitled "In Memory of Norman Bethune"...

Le timbre à 32c en haut à gauche, émis le 16 septembre 1983, rend hommage à Josiah Henson (1789-1883), ancien esclave aux Etats-Unis qui se réfugia au Canada où il fonda une communauté et une école pour les esclaves en fuite. Sa vie inspira le personnage principal du roman "La case de l'oncle Tom".
Les 2 timbres à 17c suivants, émis le 22 juillet 1981, sont consacrés aux deux botanistes Frère Marie-Victorin (1885-1944) qui fonda le jardin botanique de Montréal et John Macoun (1831-1920) qui publia un important "Catalogue of Canadien Plants".
Les autres timbres, dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre sont consacrés à :
-Aaron R. Mosher (1881-1959), précurseur du mouvement syndical au Canada en particulier dans le domaine des transports, d'où son portrait avec 2 cheminots de chaque côté. Timbre à 17c émis le 8 septembre 1981.
-Louis Saint-Laurent (1882-1973), premier ministre du Canada de 1948 à 1957, surnommé "Oncle Louis". Il fut un ardent défenseur de l'unité nationale et de la place du Canada sur le plan international. Timbre courant à 7c émis le 8 avril 1974.
-Terry Fox (1958-1981), amputé de la jambe droite après un accident et un cancer, il lutta pour recueillir des fonds pour la recherche contre le cancer à travers sa tentative de traversée du Canada et l'organisation du marathon de l'espoir. Timbre à 30c émis le 13 avril 1982.
-Philippe Aubert de Gaspé (1786-1871), célèbre pour son roman "Les Anciens Canadiens", publié en 1862, décrivant la civilisation canadienne-française au 18ème et 19ème siècle. Timbre à 34c émis le 14 avril 1986.
-Agnes Macphail (1890-1954), 1ère canadienne élue au parlement, elle consacra son action aux questions rurales et à la défense des droits des femmes. Timbre à 39c émis le 9 octobre 1990.
-Antoine Labelle (1833-1891), homme d'église québécois qui milita pour le développement de la région des Laurentides en encourageant l'arrivée de colons et du chemin de fer. Timbre à 32c émis le 16 septembre 1983.
-John George Diefenbaker (1895-1979), avocat défenseur des plus démunis puis premier ministre conservateur du Canada de 1957 à 1963. Il défendra entre autres sa Déclaration canadienne des droits. Timbre gravé à 17c émis le 20 juin 1980.
-Emmanuel-Persillier Lachapelle (1845-1918), médecin connu dans le domaine de la santé publique au Québec. Il fonda en 1880 l'hôpital Notre-Dame de Montréal. Timbre à 17c émis le 5 décembre 1980.
-Molly Brant (1736-1796), appelée Koñwatsi'tsiaiéñni dans sa tribu iroquoise, joua un rôle important pour persuader la confédération iroquoise de soutenir la Grande-Bretagne pendant la Révolution américaine. Elle se réfugia au Canada en 1777. Timbre à 34c émis le 14 avril 1986.
-John Molson (1763-1836), industriel et homme politique, il fait construire le premier bateau à vapeur canadien et investit dans le premier chemin de fer du Canada. Timbre à 34c émis le 4 novembre 1986.

The 32c stamp in the upper left, issued on 16th of September 1983, pays tribute to Josiah Henson (1789-1883), a former slave in the United States who fled to Canada where he founded a community and a school for fugitive slaves. His life inspired the main character of the novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin".
The two following 17c stamps, issued on 22th of July 1981, are devoted to the two botanists Frère Marie-Victorin (1885-1944) who founded the botanical garden of Montreal and John Macoun (1831-1920) who published the important "Catalogue of Canadian Plants".
The other stamps in the clockwise are devoted to :
-Aaron R. Mosher (1881-1959), forerunner of the Canadian labor movement in particular in the transport field, hence his portrait on this stamp with two railroaders on each side. A 17c stamp issued on 8th of September 1981.
-Louis Saint-Laurent (1882-1973), Prime Minister of Canada from 1948 to 1957, nicknamed "Uncle Louis". He was a staunch defender of national unity and of Canada's place on the international scene. A definitive 7c stamp issued on 8th of April 1974.
-Terry Fox (1958-1981), amputated of his right leg after an accident and cancer, he struggled to raise money for the research against cancer through his attempt to cross Canada and the organization of the Marathon of Hope. A 30c stamp issued on 13th of April 1982.
-Philippe Aubert de Gaspé (1786-1871), famous for his novel "Les Anciens Canadiens", published in 1862, describing life in French Canada in the 18th and 19th century. A 34c stamp issued on 14th of April 1986.

-John George Diefenbaker (1895-1979), lawyer, defender of the worst-off then Conservative Prime Minister of Canada from 1957 to 1963. Among others, he defended his Canadian Bill of Rights. An engraved 17c stamp issued on 20th of June 1980.

Garnet a eu la gentillesse de joindre à sa lettre plusieurs FDC concernant des émissions récentes, dont les 2 ci-dessus et ci-dessous :-)
J'ai déjà évoqué sur ce blog les 2 timbres ci-dessus consacrés à l'Année mondiale de l'Astronomie (AMA), émis le 2 avril 2009, reçus sur une lettre en version autocollante. Ces 2 timbres ont été également émis dans le splendide bloc-feuillet ci-dessus, existant en 2 versions dont un avec une surcharge représentant le logo de l'AMA en haut à gauche, uniquement visible à la lumière noire. La nébuleuse de la Carène (NASA) est représentée dans la marge supérieure.
L'illustration sur l'enveloppe montre la galaxie spirale barrée NGC 1532-31 située dans la constellation de l'Eridan (observatoire Gemini).
L'oblitération "1er jour", formée de l'année 2009 argentée, comporte la mention "Saanich BC", ville où se trouve l’Observatoire fédéral d’astrophysique, évoqué sur le timbre ci-dessus à gauche.

I've already mentioned on this blog the two stamps above devoted to the International Year of Astronomy (IYA), issued on 2th of April 2009, received on a previous cover in a self-adhesive version. These two stamps were also issued in the splendid souvenir sheet above, existing in two versions, one with an overprint depicting the IYA logo on the top left corner, viewable only under black light. The Carina nebula (NASA) is shown in the top margin.
The illustration on the cover is depicting the NGC 1532-31 barred spiral galaxy, located in the constellation Eridanus (Gemini Observatory).
The FDC constellation, composed of an original silvery 2009 mention, includes the word "Saanich BC", where is located the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, mentioned on the left stamp above.

Je vous ai également déjà parlé de l'autre splendide bloc-feuillet (constitué de deux timbres) émis le 9 avril 2009 par la poste canadienne dans le cadre de la campagne philatélique internationale de protection des régions polaires et des glaciers.
Ces 2 timbres ont été également émis en feuille de 16 timbres (8 de chaque). Grâce au FDC ci-dessus, vous pouvez voir le quart inférieur gauche de cette feuille, avec l'emblème de cette campagne dans les 4 coins de chaque feuille.
Ce FDC est spécial car l'oblitération "1er jour", évoquant les 2 régions polaires du globe, a été émise à Eureka, base de recherche arctique sur l'île d'Ellesmere (Territoire du Nunavut), où se trouve le bureau postal canadien le plus au nord !
I've also already spoken about the other beautiful souvenir sheet (consisting of two stamps) issued on 9th of April 2009 by Canada Post as part of the International Philatelic campaign for preservation of the polar regions and glaciers.
These two stamps were also issued in sheets of 16 stamps (8 of each). Through the FDC above you can see the bottom left quarter of this sheet, with the official insignia of this campaign printed in the four corners of each sheet.
This FDC is special because the FDC cancellation, referring to the two polar regions of the globe, was issued in Eureka, an Arctic research base on Ellesmere Island (Nunavut), home to Canada's most northerly post office !

Le pays qui a vu naître Nicolas Copernic il y a plus de 500 ans doit être fier de célébrer l'Année mondiale de l'astronomie à travers le timbre émis le 5 mai 2009 par la poste polonaise dans le cadre de son émission EUROPA.
Ce timbre figure sur le FDC officiel ci-dessous avec une très intéressante oblitération "1er jour" de Varsovie.

The country where was born Nicolaus Copernicus more than 500 years ago should be proud to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy through the stamp issued on 5th of May 2009 by the Polish Post as part of its EUROPA issue.
This stamp is included on the official FDC below with a very interesting FDC cancellation from Warsaw.

Cette année mondiale de l'astronomie, proclamée par les Nations Unies sur proposition de l'union astronomique internationale (UAI), ne coïncide pas seulement avec les 400 ans de la 1ère utilisation d'une lunette astronomique par Galilée mais également avec les 40 ans des premiers pas de l'homme sur la lune et avec les 90 ans de la création de l'UAI.
Ce timbre, ainsi que l'illustration sur l'enveloppe, évoque une représentation symbolique de la façon dont les observations célestes sont transcrites dans le langage humain. On peut y voir différentes constellations et une étoile émettant des rayons de lumière sous la forme de longues séquences de chiffres...
This International Year of Astronomy, proclaimed by the United Nations on a proposal from the International Astronomical Union (IAU), is not only coinciding with the 400 years of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo, but also with the 40 years of the first steps of man on the moon and with the 90 years of the IAU's creation.
This stamp, as well as the illustration on the envelope, evokes a symbolic representation of how celestial observations are transcribed in human language. You can see different constellations and a star emitting light rays presented as long sequences of digits...

Kazimierz m'avait également envoyé il y a un peu plus longtemps cet autre très joli FDC ci-dessus concernant le bloc-feuillet émis le 16 avril 2009, pour célébrer l'exposition philatélique internationale "China 2009", qui a eut lieu à Luoyang (province du Henan) du 10 au 16 avril 2009 sous le patronage de la FIP (Fédération Internationale de Philatélie).
C'était seulement la 2ème fois qu'un tel évènement philatélique était organisé en Chine et il coïncide cette année avec les 60 ans de la création de la république populaire de Chine.
Ce bloc numéroté (n°8650) est composé d'un timbre unique représentant un poisson, symbole de santé et d'abondance dans la tradition chinoise.
Luoyang, ville historique qui fut capitale de la Chine en 192, est connue en Chine pour être la ville des pivoines. D'où les représentations de ces fleurs dans les marges du bloc, sur l'enveloppe et sur l'oblitération FDC !
Depuis quelques années, la poste polonaise a pris l'habitude d'émettre des bloc-feuillets concernant des expositions philatéliques internationales : Bucarest en 2008, Saint-Petersbourg en 2007, Washington en 2006, Sydney en 2005 ou Singapour en 2004.
Kazimierz also sent me some days ago the other lovely FDC above with the souvenir sheet issued on 16th of April 2009, to celebrate the World Philatelic Exhibition "China 2009", which was held in Luoyang (Henan Province) from 10 to 16 April 2009 under the patronage of the FIP (International Federation of Philately).
It was only the 2nd time that such an important Philatelic event was organized in China and it coincides this year with the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The numbered (No. 8650) sheet is composed of a unique stamp depicting a fish, symbol of health and abundance in the Chinese tradition.
Luoyang, a historical city that was the capital of China in 192, is known in the country as the city of peonies. Hence the representations of these flowers in the margins of the sheet, on the envelope and the FDC cancellation !
In recent years, the Polish Post get used to issue souvenir sheet concerning some international Philatelic Exhibitions : Bucharest in 2008, St. Petersburg in 2007, Washington in 2006, Sydney in 2005 and Singapore in 2004.

Série EUROPA d'Estonie

La poste estonienne émet chaque année indifféremment un ou deux timbres dans le cadre de son émission EUROPA. Elle a choisi cette année d'émettre 2 timbres se-tenant ayant bien sûr pour thème l'Astronomie (9 EEK chacun).
Ces 2 timbres figurent sur le très réussi FDC ci-dessous avec oblitération "1er jour" du 5 mai 2009, reproduisant en partie le logo officiel de l'Année mondiale de l'Astronomie (comme pour l'oblitération "1er jour" de la série EUROPA française).
Merci beaucoup Kristiina de me permettre d'évoquer , à travers ces 2 timbres, le grand astrophysicien estonien Jaan Einasto (né en 1929) :-)
The Estonian Post annually issues either one or two stamps as part of its EUROPA set. Two se-tenant stamps (EEK 9.00 each) have been issued this year about of course the "Astronomy" theme.
These two stamps are included on the very nice FDC below with a FDC cancellation of May 5, 2009, containing a part of the official logo of the International Year of Astronomy (as for the FDC cancellation of the EUROPA French series).

Ces 2 timbres font donc référence à Jaan Einasto qui, avec Mihkel Joeveer, présenta pour la 1ère fois en 1977, lors d'une conférence à l'observatoire de Tartu, sa théorie concernant la structure d'une cellule de l'univers...
Ils suggérèrent alors que l'univers était constitué de grands superamas (associations d'amas et de groupes de galaxies) entourant de larges vides. Ces superamas font partie des plus grandes structures connues constituant notre Univers. Einasto et Joeveer mirent au point leur théorie en étudiant en particulier le superamas de Persée-Poissons, qui figure sans doute sur le timbre de gauche. Je ne suis pas un spécialiste mais le timbre de droite semble représenter la galaxie d'Andromède...
L'illustration de l'enveloppe ci-dessus reproduit le réfracteur de Fraunhofer, le télescope le plus grand et le plus perfectionné dans le monde dans les années 1820. Ce télescope fut utilisé à partir de 1824 à l'observatoire de Tartu.
These two stamps are therefore devoted to Jaan Einasto who, with Mihkel Joeveer, presented for the first time in 1977 during a conference at the Tartu Observatory, his theory regarding the cell structure of the universe...
They then suggested that the universe consisted of large superclusters (large groups of smaller galaxy groups and clusters) surrounding large voids. These superclusters are among the largest structures known in our universe. Einasto and Joeveer established their theory by studying in particular the Perseus-Pisces supercluster, which is certainly depicted on the left stamp. I'm not an expert but the other stamp seems to depict the Andromeda Galaxy...
The illustration of the cover above reproduces the Fraunhofer's refractor, the world's largest and most advanced telescope in the 1820s. This telescope was used from 1824 at the Tartu Observatory.

La poste hellénique a émis le 30 mars 2009 un très intéressant bloc-feuillet dans le cadre de la campagne philatélique internationale "Protégeons les régions polaires et les glaciers".
Ce bloc-feuillet, constitué de 2 timbres ronds à 1€, figure sur la lettre ci-dessous, postée le 4 mai 2009 de Agia Paraskevi.

Malheureusement, cette lettre a été oblitérée de façon mécanique et seul le timbre du haut à été oblitéré...
The Greek Post has issued on 30th of March 2009 a very interesting souvenir sheet as part of the International Philatelic campaign "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers".
This souvenir sheet, consisting of two round stamps (€1.00 each), is included on the nice cover below, mailed on 4th of May 2009 from Agia Paraskevi.

Ce bloc numéroté (n° 76766 sur un tirage total de 100000 exemplaires) comporte le logo de la poste grecque dans la marge en haut à droite et l'emblème officiel (cristal de glace) de cette campagne en bas à gauche.
A noter que ce bloc est un des rares à comporter la mention "Changements climatiques" et ne fait référence qu'à la protection des régions polaires (comme le bloc-feuillet français)...
Anthi Lygka, l'auteur de ce bloc, a choisi une évocation très intéressante du réchauffement climatique et de la fonte des neiges à travers une sorte de clepsydre, du grec "κλεψύδρα" signifiant "dérober de l'eau" !
This numbered sheet (No. 76766 on a total circulation of 100,000 copies) is including the logo of the Greek Post in the top right margin and the official emblem (ice crystal) of this campaign in the bottom left.
Note that this sheet is one of the few to include the words "Climate Changes" and refers only to the protection of the polar regions (as on the French miniature sheet)...
Anthi Lygka, the designer of this issue, has chosen a very interesting evocation of global warming and ice or snow melting through a kind of clepsydra, from the Greek "κλεψύδρα" meaning "to steal water" !

Sauf erreur de ma part, l'Algérie est le seul pays africain, avec l'Afrique du sud, à avoir également consacrer un timbre à cette campagne internationale de protection des pôles et des glaciers.
La poste algérienne a émis un timbre isolé (comme la Suisse, l'Autriche, le Groënland ou le Kazakhstan) qui figure sur le FDC ci-dessus du 28 mars 2009 avec oblitération "1er jour" de Jijel. A noter que cette enveloppe a été postée en fait le 18 avril 2009 de la même ville.

Ce timbre évoque en particulier la protection de la région polaire antarctique. Curieusement, sur ce timbre, le cristal de glace n'est pas orienté de la même façon que pour les autres émissions de cette série...
If I'm not wrong, Algeria is the only African country, with South Africa, to have also devoted a stamp to this world campaign to preserve the poles and the glaciers.
The Algerian Post has issued a single stamp (such as Switzerland, Austria, Greenland or Kazakhstan), which is on the FDC above of 28th of March 2009 and with a FDC cancellation from Jijel. Note that this cover was mailed in fact on 18th of April 2009 from the same city.

This stamp is refering in particular to the protection of the Antarctic polar region. Curiously, on this stamp, the ice crystal is not oriented in the same manner as for the other stamps of this series...

Enfin un thème qui devrait permettre aux administrations postales européennes de faire preuve d'originalité et d'audace (soyons fous !) dans le cadre de leurs émissions EUROPA cette année !
Je veux bien sûr parler de l'astronomie, à l'occasion de l'année mondiale de l'astronomie coïncidant avec le 400ème anniversaire de la première utilisation de la lunette astronomique par Galilée en 1609.
Honneur à mon pays, la France, pour cette 1ère lettre publiée sur mon blog comportant une série EUROPA 2009 !

At last a topic that should allow the European postal administrations to show more originality and audacity for their EUROPA issues this year !
I'm of course speaking about Astronomy, at the occasion of the International Year of Astronomy coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the first use of a refractive telescope by Galileo Galilei in 1609.

Astronomie oblige, l'émission "1er jour" de ces 2 timbres avait également lieu à la Cité de l'Espace de Toulouse.
L'oblitération "1er jour" fait référence à cette année mondiale de l'astronomie et reproduit d'ailleurs le logo officiel créé pour l'occasion. Ce logo s'accompagne normalement de la mention "L'univers, découvrez ses mystères"...
Ces 2 timbres à 0,70€ (tarif en vigueur pour une lettre de moins de 20g vers l'UE) représentent des évocations de la planète Saturne (observée par Galilée en 1610) et d'une exoplanète (planète extrasolaire en orbite autour d'une autre étoile que le soleil), à partir de photos du CNES.
With this "Astronomy" topic, an other First Day of issue of these two stamps also took place in the "Cité de l'Espace" ("City of Space") in Toulouse.
The FDC cancellation refers to this International Year of Astronomy and reproduced the official logo made for the occasion. This logo is normally accompanied by the words "The Universe, yours to discover"...
These two € 0.70 (current rate for a letter up to 20g to the EU countries) stamps are depicting each an evocation of the planet Saturn (observed by Galileo in 1610) and of an exoplanet (extrasolar planet in orbit around another star than the sun), designed from CNES (French National Center of Space Research) photographs.

Ces 2 timbres ont été émis dans le bloc-feuillet spécial ci-dessus (je crois que c'est la 1ère fois...). Mais je dois avouer que je trouve ces 2 timbres plus jolis isolés sur lettre, comme sur celle ci-dessus, que dans ce bloc...
Ce bloc, imprimé en offset, est spécial car certaines parties ont été recouvertes d'une encre pailletée (qui n'apparaît pas sur le bloc ci-dessus).
Je trouve que le résultat final n'est pas du meilleur goût même si je salue l'originalité du procédé...
Comme la saison des EUROPA est ouverte, et pratiquement toutes les postes européennes ayant rendu public leurs timbres émis à l'occasion, j'ai déjà élu mes timbres préférés : ceux émis par les îles Féroé :-)

These two stamps were issued in the special souvenir sheet above (I believe this is the first time...). But I must confess that I find these two stamps nicer when single on cover, like on the one above...
This sheet, printed in offset, is special because some parts were covered with a spangled ink (which does not appear on the sheet above).
I think the final result is not so great although I welcome the originality of the printing process...
As the EUROPA season is open, and almost all the European Posts having issued their stamps at this occasion, I've chosen my favorite stamps : Faroe Islands :-)

Les 3 pays baltes participent à la campagne internationale, initiée par la Finlande et le Chili, visant à sensibiliser le public aux changements climatiques et à ses effets en particulier dans les régions polaires et concernant les glaciers du globe.
Je vous ai déjà présenté récemment le bloc-feuillet émis par la poste estonienne. Voici cette fois celui émis par la Lituanie !
Ce bloc, composé de 2 timbres à 2,90 Lt, figure sur la jolie lettre ci-dessous postée le 30 avril 2009 de Vilnius, la capitale.

The three Baltic countries are participating in the international campaign, initiated by Finland and Chile, aimed at raising awareness of climate change and its effects particularly in the polar regions and glaciers on the globe.
I've already published recently the souvenir sheet issued by the Estonian Post. Here is this time the one issued by Lithuania !
This sheet, with two stamps (Lt 2.90 each), is included on the lovely cover below mailed on 30th of April 2009 from Vilnius, the capital.

Cette enveloppe est en fait un FDC à l'origine, émis le 27 mars 2009. Comme pour les autres émissions de cette série internationale, l'emblème officiel (un cristal de glace) et la mention "Protection des régions polaires et des glaciers" ("Išsaugokime poliarinius regionus ir ledynus" en lituanien) figurent dans les marges de ce bloc-feuillet.
L'auteur de ce bloc, G.Luzinienė, y a représenté des cheminées d'usine afin de rappeler que l'industrie, avec la production d'énergie, l'automobile ou d'autres activités humaines, participent à la concentration de gaz à effet de serre autour de la terre entraînant une augmentation des températures et des dérèglements climatiques...
Les 2 timbres représentent des glaciers qui fondent (à gauche) et à protéger (à droite), rappelant qu'avec les régions polaires, ils sont particulièrement menacés par la hausse des températures.
Une carte de la région polaire arctique figure également dans la marge en bas à gauche.
Aucun animal ne figurant sur ce bloc, un ours polaire (bien sûr !) a été dessiné sur l'enveloppe !
This cover is in fact a FDC that was originally issued on 27th of March 2009. Like the other issues of this international series, the officiel insignia (an ice crystal) and the mention "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" ("Išsaugokime poliarinius regionus ir ledynus" in Lithuanian) are included in the margins of this souvenir sheet.
The designer of this sheet, G. Luzinienė, has depicted some factory chimneys to remind us that industry, with energy production, automobiles or other human activities, contribute to the concentration of greenhouse gasses around the Earth causing an increase in temperature and climate change...
The two stamps represent a thawing glacier (on the left) and a glacier to protect (on the right), noting that as for the polar regions, they are especially threatened by rising temperatures.
A map of the Arctic region is also included in the bottom left margin.
No animal being depicted on this sheet, a Polar bear (of course !) has been added on this cover !

New ATM stamps in Taiwan

Un message court ce soir pour vous présenter cette lettre postée le 1er jour d'émission (15 avril 2009) des nouveaux timbres de distributeurs émis par la poste taïwanaise.

Ce nouveau timbre représente des fleurs blanches de Vernicia fordii (arbre tung), un arbre très apprécié à Taïwan. Les arbres fleurissent vers la fin du printemps et le début de l'été dans les régions de l'île de moyenne et basse altitude. La beauté des paysages attire alors de très nombreux touristes.
Ces fleurs sont également à l'honneur chaque année lors du Festival Hakka.
A short post tonight to show you this nice cover mailed on the 1st day of issue (15th of April 2009) of the new ATM stamps issued by the Taiwanese Post.

This new stamp is depicting some white Vernicia fordii (tung tree) flowers, a tree highly valued in Taiwan. The trees are blooming in late spring and early summer in mid and low altitudes areas of the island. This scenic beauty attracts many tourists.
These flowers are also honored each year during the Hakka Festival.

Ces 2 timbres de distributeur (9 NT$ et 8 NT$) proviennent, comme les précédents, de machines du type Innovision réparties dans toute l'île (30 sites répartis dans les bureaux de poste des 11 villes principales).
Chaque machine a un code particulier (3 chiffres). Le code '077' imprimé sur les 2 timbres ci-dessus correspond ainsi au bureau de poste Shihlin à Taipei.
A noter que ces mêmes fleurs figuraient sur les timbres de distributeurs précédents émis lors du salon philatélique "Taipei 2008" qui eut lieu en mars 2008.
These two ATM stamp (NT$ 9.00 and NT$ 8.00) come, as the precedent ones, from Innovision type vending machines located throughout the island (30 sites located in the post offices of the 11 major cities).
Each machine has a particular code (3 digits). The code '077 ' printed on the two stamps above corresponds to the Taipei Shihlin post office.
Note that these same flowers were included on the previous ATM stamps issued during the "Taipei 2008" Philatelic Exhibition held in March 2008.

Un timbre "BVLGARI" en Italie

A "BVLGARI" stamp in Italy

Après des marques automobiles en 2007 et des produits gastronomiques en 2008, la poste italienne a émis, le 24 avril 2009, un nouveau timbre dans sa série "Made in Italy" consacré cette fois au joaillier de luxe Bulgari.
Cette émission coïncide en fait avec les 125 ans de cette société prestigieuse fondée à Rome en 1884.
Ce timbre figure en 2 exemplaires sur la très jolie lettre ci-dessous avec oblitération "1er jour" de Rome.

After car brands in 2007 and gastronomic products in 2008, the Italian Post has issued on 24th of April 2009, a new stamp in its "Made in Italy" series, this time devoted to the Italian luxury jeweler Bulgari.
This issue in fact coincides with the 125th anniversary of this prestigious company based in Rome since 1884.
This stamp is included in two copies on the very nice cover below the FDC cancellation from Rome.

La 1ère boutique a donc ouvert à Rome en 1884, créée par une famille d'orfèvres originaire de Grèce. Leurs bijoux uniques, largement inspirés de l'art grec et romain, attirent rapidement les plus grandes fortunes du moment.
Les 1ers magasins ouvrent à l'étranger à partir des années 70. Il en existe près de 250 aujourd'hui. A partir des années 90, la société va commencer à se diversifier avec la conception de montres, de parfums, de sacs à main puis l'hôtellerie depuis 2001.
La poste italienne a choisi de reproduire sur ce timbre un collier impressionnant en or jaune et platine avec des améthystes, turquoises, émeraudes et diamants (réalisé en 1965).
The first shop was opened in Rome in 1884, founded by a family of goldsmiths from Greece. Their unique jewelry, largely inspired by Greek and Roman Art, quickly interested the world's rich of this time.
The first stores opened abroad in the 70's. There are nearly 250 shops worldwide today. From the 90's, the company began to branch out into the design of watches, perfumes, handbags and hotels since 2001.
The Italian Post has chosen to reproduce on this stamp an impressive yellow gold and platinium necklace with amethysts, turquoise stones, emeralds and diamonds (made in 1965).

Lettre équine de Macédoine

Après un chat en 2007 et un chien en 2008, la poste de l'ex république yougoslave de Macédoine a émis le 15 avril 2009 deux nouveaux timbres consacré à un autre meilleur ami de l'homme : le cheval. Ces 2 timbres (20 et 50 denars) figurent à droite sur la jolie lettre ci-dessous postée le 21 avril 2009 de la capitale, Skopje. Merci beaucoup Goran :-) After a cat in 2007 and a dog in 2008, the postal administration of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia has issued on 15th of April 2009 two new stamps devoted to another man's best friend : the horse. These two stamps (20 and 50 denars) are included on the right on the beautiful cover below mailed on 21th of April 2009 from the capital, Skopje. Thank you very much Goran :-) 

 Ces deux timbres ne comportent aucune mention particulière, à part le nom du pays et POSTA, concernant les races de ces deux chevaux ? Il semble qu'il existe un cheval des montagnes macédonien, une race actuellement menacée de disparition... Le programme philatélique de la poste macédonienne en 2009 est décidément sous le signe du cheval puisque deux autres timbres ont été émis le 21 janvier 2009, dans une série consacrée au patrimoine culturel, représentant respectivement l'atelier d'un forgeron (10 denars) et un fer à cheval (20 denars) ! Goran a eu la très bonne idée d'utiliser également ces deux timbres sur son affranchissement ci-dessus :-) There are no mention, except the name of the country and POSTA, included on these two stamps about the breeds of these two horses ? It seems that a Macedonian mountain horse still exists today but that is currently threatened with extinction... The Philatelic program of the Macedonian Post in 2009 is decidedly under the sign of the horse as two other stamps were issued on 21th of January 2009, in a series devoted to cultural heritage, depicting respectively a blacksmith shop (10 denars) and a horseshoe (20 denars) ! Goran had the very good idea to also use these two stamps on his cover above :-)

A tribute to an Animal conservationist

Il y a 100 ans naissait l'allemand Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987), zoologiste, directeur de zoo, écrivain, réalisateur de documentaires et surtout protecteur actif de la nature et des animaux.
La poste allemande lui a rendu hommage en émettant, le 9 avril 2009, un timbre commémoratif à 0,55€ le représentant en compagnie d'un gorille dans un écran de télévision !
Ce timbre, émis en feuille de 10 timbres, figure sur la très jolie lettre ci-dessous postée le 12 avril 2009 de la ville de Rehburg-Loccum (Basse-Saxe, nord de l'Allemagne).
On devine le troupeau de zèbres qui figure dans les marges de ces feuilles de timbres...

100 years ago was born Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987), a German zoologist, zoo director, writer, documentary filmmaker and an active nature and animal conservationist. The Deutsche Post has paid tribute to him by issuing, on 9th of April 2009, a € 0.55 commemorative stamp depicting him in the company of a gorilla through a TV screen !
This stamp, issued in sheet of ten stamps, is included on the very nice cover below mailed on 12th of April 2009 from the city of Rehburg-Loccum (Lower Saxony, northern Germany).
You can guess below the herd of zebras which appears in the margins of these stamp sheets...

Vétérinaire de formation, Grzimek devint directeur du zoo de Francfort, presque complètement détruit après la 2ème guerre mondiale. Il présidera aussi la Société zoologique de Francfort qui soutient aujourd'hui près de 70 projets dans le monde (principalement en Afrique) pour la sauvegarde de zones sauvages et la protection d'espèces animales menacées.
Mais Grzimek est surtout célèbre, avec son fils Michael, pour son combat pour la préservation des espèces animales vivant dans le parc national du Serengeti en Tanzanie.
Son film documentaire "Serengeti ne doit pas mourir" lui vaudra un Oscar en 1959. Les téléspectateurs allemands se souviennent de lui à travers son émission animalière "Ein Platz für Tiere" ("Un endroit pour les animaux") diffusée entre 1956 et 1980, d'où sans doute l'illustration retenue pour ce timbre :-)
A noter également sur cette lettre les deux intéressantes oblitérations faisant référence au DinoPark, le plus grand parc en plein air allemand consacré aux dinosaures, situé à Münchehagen. Sur ce site ont été trouvées des empreintes fossiles d'un troupeau de dinosaures datant de 130 millions d'années.
Un ptéranodon figure sur cette oblitération pour annoncer l'ouverture d'une nouvelle exposition consacrée aux ptérosaures (reptiles volants).
After studying veterinary medicine, Grzimek became director of the Frankfurt Zoological Garden, almost completely destroyed after the 2nd World War. He served also as president of the Frankfurt Zoological Society, which today supports about 70 projects in the world (mainly in Africa) for the preservation of wilderness areas and the protection of endangered animals.
But Grzimek is most famous, with his son Michael, for his fight for the preservation of animal species living in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania.
His documentary film "Serengeti shall not die" won the Oscar Academy Award in 1959. German viewers remember him through his animal TV series "Ein Platz für Tiere" ("A place for animals") broadcasted from 1956 to 1980, hence probably the illustration chosen for this stamp :-)
It's also worth noting on this letter the two interesting cancellations referring to the DinoPark, the largest open-air German Park devoted to dinosaurs, located in Münchehagen. On this site have been found fossil footprints of a herd of dinosaurs dating back 130 million years.
A Pteranodon is included on this postmark to announce the opening of a new exhibition devoted to pterosaurs (flying reptiles).

La Hongrie ("Magyarország", pays Magyar) fait partie de la quarantaine d'administrations postales à participer à la campagne philatélique internationale "Protégeons les régions polaires et les glaciers" ("Sarkvidékek és gleccserek védelme" en hongrois), initiée par les postes chilienne et finlandaise.

Un cristal de glace stylisé, symbole de cette campagne, figure dans la marge en haut à gauche de cet élégant bloc-feuillet numéroté (n°14509), émis le 27 mars 2009, composé de deux timbres à 260 Forints.
Hungary ("Magyarország", Magyar country) is one of the about forty postal administrations to participate in the International Philatelic campaign "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" ("Sarkvidékek és gleccserek védelme" in Hungarian), initiated by the Chilean and Finnish Posts.

A stylized Ice crystal, the insignia of this world campaign, is included in the top left margin of this elegant numbered (No. 14509) souvenir sheet issued on 27th of March 2009, consisting of two stamps (260 Forint each).

Les marges de ce bloc, ainsi que le timbre du haut, représentant un ours polaire (Ursus maritimus), évoquent la fonte de la banquise et des glaciers de la région arctique sous l'effet du réchauffement climatique. L'écosystème de ces régions polaires est menacé par les changements climatiques, en particulier certaines espèces animales comme le renard polaire (Alopex lagopus) représenté sur l'autre timbre ou le phoque, le narval, le béluga, la mouette ou le macareux figurant dans la marge à gauche.
Ce bloc-feuillet imprimé en offset est particulier car pour la première fois, la poste hongroise a ajouté des parties sérigraphiées avec un vernis irisé, utilisé d'habitude pour la sécurisation de billets de banques ou de pièces d'identité !
Cette technique permet à ce bloc de rappeler l'atmosphère glacée des régions polaires, ce qui est plutôt réussi :-)
Dans cette même série, la Magyar Posta a émis 4 timbres représentant également des espèces animales (ours polaire, boeuf musqué, léopard des neiges et manchots royaux). Cette série est disponible en version offset classique (tirage : 250000) et en version sérigraphiée (tirage : 100000)...
The margins of this sheet and also the top stamp, depicting a Polar bear (Ursus maritimus), refer to the melting of icefields and glaciers in the Arctic region as a result of global warming. The ecosystem of these polar areas is threatened by climate change, particularly some animal species such as Arctic Fox (Alopex lagopus) depicted on the other stamp, or Seals, Narwhal, Beluga whales, Puffins and Seagulls in the left margin above.
This sheet, printed in offset, is special because for the first time, the Hungarian Post has added some iridescent spot-vanish screen printed parts, usually used for security products such as banknotes or identity documents !
This technique allows this sheet to recall the frosty atmosphere of the polar regions, which is rather a success :-)
In the same series, Magyar Posta has also issued four single stamps depicting other animal species (Polar bear, Musk ox, Snow leopard and Emperor penguins). This series is available in classic offset version (total print : 250,000) and iridescent version (total print : 100,000)...

Inventions australiennes

Le 19 février 2009, la poste australienne (qui célèbre ses 200 ans cette année) a émis une intéressante série de 5 timbres à 55c consacrée à différentes inventions australiennes faisant partie de la vie de tous les jours. La plupart de ces inventions sont liées au développement après-guerre de l'habitat dans les banlieues des principales villes du pays.
Ces 5 timbres autocollants figurent sur la très jolie lettre ci-dessous (un FDC à l'origine) postée le 14 avril 2009. A noter la forme très originale (étendoir à linge) de l'oblitération "1er jour" de la ville de Bright (Victoria).

On 19th of February 2009, Australia Post (which is celebrating its 200 years in 2009) has issued an interesting set of five stamps (55c each) depicting different Australian inventions that have become part of everyday life. Most of these inventions are linked with the post-war development of suburban housing in the main cities.
These five self-adhesive stamps are included on the very nice cover below (a FDC at the origin) mailed on 14th of April 2009. Note the very original shape (clothes line) of the FDC cancellation from the town of of Bright (Victoria).

-le fameux "Hills hoist", un étendoir à linge rotatif, conçu en 1946 par l'inventeur Lance Hill, avec son système permettant de régler la hauteur des cordes à linge. Cet objet est devenu une icône en Australie et un des premiers modèles est exposé au musée national australien.

From left to right :
-Esky portable cooler invented in 1952 by the Malley's company and a wine cask created in 1965 by the company Angove's.
-the famous Hills hoist, a rotary clothes drying, designed in 1946 by the inventor Lance Hill, with its system for adjusting the height of clotheslines. It is considered one of Australia's most recognisable icons and an early models is kept at National Museum of Australia.

Le célèbre illustrateur australien Stuart McLachlan s'est inspiré de son enfance dans la banlieue d'Adélaïde pour concevoir cette scène typique dans le jardin d'une famille australienne dans les années 1980.
Ben me signale qu'une autre invention typiquement australienne, la vegemite, pâte à tartiner salée et noire à base de levure de bière (créée en 1922), aurait pu aussi figurer dans cette série :-)

These five stamps were also issued in the very nice souvenir sheet above.
The famous Australian illustrator Stuart McLachlan took inspiration from his childhood in the Adelaide suburbs to design this typical scene in the backyard of an Australian family in the 1980's.
Ben pointed me that another typically Australian invention, the Vegemite, a dark brown food paste made from yeast extract (invented in 1922), was also able to be part of this series :-)

Le 18 mars 2009 a eu lieu à Santiago le lancement officiel de la série de timbres émise par la poste chilienne dans le cadre de la campagne internationale "Protégeons les régions polaires et les glaciers" ("Preservar las Regiones Polares y los Glaciares" en espagnol), en présence de l'ambassadeur de Finlande, Livo Salmi.
Une manifestation similaire avait lieu le même jour à Helsinki pour le lancement du bloc-feuillet finlandais (j'ai déjà publié le FDC correspondant sur ce blog), en présence de l'ambassadeur du Chili, Carlos Parra.
Carlos Parra initia cette idée d'une émission commune entre un pays de la région arctique, la Finlande, et un pays proche du continent antarctique, le Chili, visant à sensibiliser le monde sur l'impact du réchauffement climatique sur les zones polaires.
On 18th of March 2009 took place in Santiago the official launching of the series of stamps issued by the Chilean Post as part of the international campaign "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" ("Preservar las Regiones Polares y los Glaciares" in Spanish ) in the presence of the Ambassador of Finland, Livo Salmi.
A similar event took place that day in Helsinki to launch the Finnish souvenir sheet (I've already published the corresponding FDC on this blog) in the presence of the Ambassador of Chile, Carlos Parra.
Carlos Parra initiated the idea of a common issue between an Arctic region country, Finland, and a country close to the Antarctic continent, Chile, aiming at increase public awarness of the impact of global warming on polar areas.

Cette initiative devint un projet concret lors de la visite officielle en Finlande (en mai 2007) de la présidente du Chili. Près de 40 administrations postales, dont la France, se sont joints à cette campagne internationale en émettant en 2009 des timbres ayant en commun un emblème représentant un cristal de glace, conçu par le graphiste finlandais Saku Heinänen.
Je suis donc très heureux, après la Finlande, de vous montrer ci-dessus la lettre postée le 13 avril 2009 de Concepcion, avec les 2 timbres se-tenant émis par la poste chilienne.

J'aime bien le graphisme de ces 2 timbres avec des parties argentées (dont les cristaux) et cette évocation des deux régions polaires, île de Baffin (Canada) et Groënland sur le timbre du haut et la péninsule Antarctique sur le timbre du bas.
This initiative became a concrete project during the official visit of the President of Chile to Finland (May 2007). About 40 postal administrations, including France, have joined this international campaign in 2009 by issuing stamps with a common insignia representing an ice crystal, designed by the Finnish graphic designer Saku Heinänen.

I like the design of these two stamps with silver parts (including crystals) and this evocation of the two polar regions, Baffin Island (Canada) and Greenland on the top stamp and the Antarctic Peninsula on the other stamp.

La série de 2 timbres figurant sur la lettre ci-dessus a été émise en 50000 exemplaires.
Mais la poste chilienne a également émis dans cette même série le bloc-feuillet ci-dessus composé de 2 timbres ayant chacun une valeur faciale élevée (1500 pesos). Cette émission "de luxe" a fait l'objet d'un tirage de seulement 3000 exemplaires...
Les 2 timbres reprennent le même visuel avec les 2 régions polaires et les 2 lignes rouges symbolisant les dangers du changement climatique qui les menacent.
Par contre, je ne sais pas exactement ce que la poste chilienne a voulu évoquer avec cette forme glacée servant de fond sur ce bloc ? Peut-être des parties de côtes du continent antarctique ?
The set of two stamps included on the cover above was issued in 50,000 copies.
But the Chilean Post has also issued in the same series the souvenir sheet above consisting of two high value stamps (1.500 Pesos each). This "luxury" sheet has been printed in only 3,000 copies...
The two stamps incorporate the same design with the two polar regions and the two red lines symbolizing the dangers of climate change that threaten them.
I don't know however exactly what the Post of Chile has wanted to evoke with this icefield shape in the background ? Maybe some coastal parts of the Antarctic continent ?

Le 3 avril 2009, la poste coréenne a débuté l'émission d'une nouvelle série de 4 timbres à 250 won représentant les monuments naturels n°495, n°478, n°294 et n°30 !
Cette nomenclature, créée par l'administration coréenne du patrimoine culturel, concerne en l'occurrence des arbres anciens du pays dont l'histoire s'accompagne souvent de légendes. Cette série annuelle doit se terminer en 2012.
Ces 4 premiers timbres, émis dans une jolie feuille de 16 timbres (4 exemplaires de chaque) figurent sur les 2 FDC ci-dessous. A noter les intéressantes oblitérations "1er jour" symbolisant la coupe d'un tronc d'arbre.

On 3th of April 2009, the Korean Post has began the issue of a new set of four stamps (250 won each) depicting the natural monuments No. 495, No. 478, No. 294 and No. 30 !
This classification, created by the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration, concerns in this case different old trees of the country whose history is the basis for mysterious legends. This yearly series will continue until 2012.
The four first stamps, issued in a nice sheet of 16 stamps (four of each stamp) are included on the two FDC below. Note the interesting FDC cancellations symbolizing a tree trunk's slice.

L'arbre représenté sur le timbre ci-dessus en haut (n°478) est un zelkova situé dans le comté de Jangseong. Cet arbre très épais, surnommé "Janggun Namu" (l'arbre du général), est considéré comme un arbre divin car il a été planté en hommage à un général mort au combat lors de l'invasion japonaise de la Corée.
Le 2ème arbre (n°294) ci-dessus, avec ses branches atteignant 30 m de long (supportées par des colonnes en pierre), aurait plus de 600 ans. Situé dans le comté de Yecheon, ce pin parasol fut appelé "Seoksongnyeong" par un villageois qui lui légua sa terre, ce qui en fait l'un des arbres les plus rares au monde à posséder sa propre terre !
The tree depicted on the top stamp above (No. 478) is a zelkova tree located in the Jangseong County. This very thick tree, nicknamed "Janggun Namu" (general's tree), is considered as a divine tree because it was planted in honor of a general who died during the Japanese invasion of Korea.
The second tree (No. 294) above, with its branches reaching 30 m long (supported by stone columns) is more than 600 years old. Located in the Yecheon County, this umbrella pine was named "Seoksongnyeong" by a villager who bequeathed him his land, making it one of the rarest trees in the world to possess its own property !

Le timbre ci-dessus à gauche représente l'arbre du type gingko (n°30) le plus grand (60m) et le plus ancien (1100 ans) du pays. De nombreuses légendes accompagnent cet arbre appartenant au temple Yongmunsa situé dans le comté de Yangpyeong : il saigne lorsque ses branches sont coupées et pousse des cris lorsque des désastres surviennent en Corée. Cet arbre fut le seul à ne pas brûler lorsque les troupes japonaises incendièrent le temple en 1907.
Le dernier arbre (n°495) ci-dessus à droite montre le plus grand sapin du pays (35m) planté il y a 400 ans dans le temple Cheonhwangsa situé dans le comté de Jinan. Il fut planté à l'origine pour la prospérité de ce temple.
The stamp above on the left is depicting a gingko tree (No. 30), the tallest (60m) and oldest (1,100 years) of the country. Many legends accompany this tree belonging to the Yongmunsa temple located in the Yangpyeong County : it is bleeding when its branches are cut and is crying out when disasters occur in Korea. This tree was the only one not to burn when the Japanese troops burned the temple in 1907.
The last tree (No. 495) above on the right shows the largest size fir tree of the country (35m) planted 400 years ago in the Cheonhwangsa temple located in the Jinan County. It was planted at the origin in wishing for the prosperity of this temple.

EUROPA 1997 (Tales & legends) stamp (among others) on covers from Slovakia

J'ai déjà largement exprimé sur ce blog mon affection particulière pour les timbres gravés émis par la république slovaque. Voici à nouveau 4 lettres qui me permettent d'évoquer à nouveau la philatélie de ce pays avec des timbres émis entre 1993 et 2007.

En 2004, la poste slovaque avait choisi de représenté un œuf décoré pour son émission du 10 mars consacrée aux fêtes de Pâques. Ce petit timbre à 8 Sk figure sur la lettre ci-dessous à gauche. Dans un message précédent, j'ai évoqué le timbre consacré à Pâques émis en 2009, représentant également un joli œuf peint.
I've already expressed on this blog my affection for the engraved stamps issued by the Slovak Republic. Here are again four covers that allow me to evoke again some Slovak stamps issued between 1993 and 2007.

In 2004, the Slovak Post had chosen to depict a decorated egg for its stamp issued on 10th of March devoted to Easter. This small Sk 8.00 stamp appears on the cover below to the left. In a previous post, I mentioned an other Easter stamp issued in 2009, also depicting a lovely painted egg.

Le timbre ci-dessus à droite fait partie de la jolie série de 3 timbres émise le 25 septembre 1996, intitulée "Splendeurs de notre patrie", représentant différents lacs de montagne comme le lac de Skalnaté pleso, proche du pic Lomnica dans la chaîne des hautes Tatras.
A cause des activités humaines (construction d'un hôtel, d'un observatoire...), ce lac est menacé de disparition et fait l'objet d'une surveillance particulière...
Le timbre du milieu (9 Sk) a été émis le 5 mai 1997 dans le cadre de la série EUROPA dont le thème était cette année-là les contes et légendes.
Ce timbre évoque une légende datant de la conquête des territoires barbares, au nord du Danube, par les troupes romaines de Marc Aurèle vers 173 après JC. Alors que l'armée romaine était encerclée par les Quades, et menacée de mourir de soif, une pluie miraculeuse (envoyée par Jupiter) tomba et sauva les romains. Cet épisode figure sur la colonne en marbre de Marc Aurèle, érigée à Rome en 192 après J.-C.
The stamp above on the right is part of the beautiful series of three stamps issued on 25th of September 1996 entitled "Splendours of our homeland", depicting different mountain lakes as the Skalnaté pleso Lake, near the Lomnica Peak in the high Tatras mountains.
Because of human activities (building of an hotel, an observatory...), this lake is threatened with extinction and is the subject of a particular surveillance...
The stamp in the middle (Sk 9.00) was issued on 5th of May 1997 as part of the EUROPA series with this year's tales and legends topic.
This stamp evokes a legend dating from the conquest of barbaric territories, north of the Danube, by the Roman troops of Marcus Aurelius around 173 AD. While the Roman army was surrounded by Quads, and threatened to die of thirst, a miraculous rain (sent by Jupiter) fell and saved the Romans. This episode is carved on the marble column of Marcus Aurelius erected in Rome in 192 AD.

Le timbre ci-dessus, émis le 26 octobre 2007, rend hommage à Robert William Seton-Watson (1879-1951), un activiste politique et historien britannique qui milita activement pour l'éclatement de l'Empire austro-hongrois et l'émergence de la Tchécoslovaquie et de la Yougoslavie à partir de la 1ère guerre mondiale.
Il se battit pour que les droits de la nation slovaque, alors oppressée, soient reconnus. Il fut marqué par le massacre de Černová en 1907 puis milita pour une réconciliation entre les peuples tchèques et slovaques entre les deux guerres mondiales.
The stamp above, issued on 26th of October 2007, pays tribute to Robert William Seton-Watson (1879-1951), a British political activist and historian who actively campaigned for the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the emergence of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia from the 1st World War.
He fought for the recognition of the rights of the oppressed Slovak nation. He was marked by the massacre of Černová in 1907 and then campaigned for reconciliation between the Czech and Slovak peoples between the two World Wars.

Des sujets très divers évoqués sur les timbres de la lettre ci-dessus !
Le timbre à 2 Sk en bas à gauche, le 15ème seulement à avoir été émis (le 22 juin 1993) par la poste slovaque depuis l'indépendance, commémore les 150 ans de la promulgation de la langue slovaque en 1843 dans la région de Senica à l'époque du renouveau national slovaque.
Le timbre à 7 Sk en bas à droite, émis le 15 avril 1996, commémore l'Année mondiale des Nations Unies pour l'éradication de la pauvreté.
Le timbre à gauche (2 Sk), émis le 10 juin 1994, évoque la Coupe du monde de Football qui eut lieu aux États-Unis. Le graphisme de ce timbre est curieux avec un terrain de football représenté sur une cravate...La France ne s'était malheureusement pas qualifiée mais elle se rattrapera 4 ans plus tard.
Le timbre à 8 Sk fait partie d'une série de 3 timbres, émis le 28 février 1995 dans le cadre de l'Année européenne de la protection de la nature, initiée par le Conseil de l'Europe, dont l'emblème (2 parties d'une feuille liées par une épingle à nourrice) figure sur ce timbre. Une espèce de plante très rare (Onosma tornense), ne poussant que dans une zone limitée proche du village de Turnianske Podhradie est représentée sur ce timbre.
Le dernier timbre à message (bouquet de fleurs) a été émis le 30 avril 2003 en feuille de 8 timbres avec vignettes attachées personnalisables. Le coupon ci-dessus évoque le salon philatélique international "NitraFila" qui eut lieu à Nitra du 11 au 15 juin 2003.

The Sk 2.00 stamp bottom left, the 15th only to have been issued (on June 22, 1993) by the Slovak Post after the independence, commemorates the 150th anniversary of the enactment of the Slovak language in 1843 in the region of Senica at the Slovak national revival period.
The Sk 7.00 stamp bottom right, issued on 15th of April 1996, commemorates the United Nations International Year for the eradication of poverty.
The stamp on the left (Sk 2.00) issued on 10th of June 1994, is evoking the Football World Cup which took place in the United States. The design of this stamp is curious with a soccer field included on a tie... France didn't unfortunately compete but will do much better four years later. 
The Sk 8.00 stamp is part of a series of three stamps, issued on 28th of February 1995 as part of the European Nature Conservation Year, initiated by the Council of Europe, whose emblem (two parts of a leaf linked by a safety pin) is included on this stamp. A species of rare plant (Onosma tornense), growing only in a limited area near the village of Turnianske Podhradie, is depicted on the stamp.
The last greetings stamp (bouquet of flowers) was issued on 30th of April 2003 in a sheet of eight stamps with attached customised coupons. The label above refers to the "NitraFila" international philatelic exhibition which took place in Nitra from 11 to 15 June 2003.

La dernière enveloppe ci-dessus, très jolie avec cette illustration représentant le château de Bratislava, pourrait être qualifiée de plus artistique !
Deux œuvres d'art sont en effet reproduites sur les deux timbres. Celui à 7 Sk, émis le 15 décembre 1994, reproduit une peinture intitulée "Filles" (1932) par Janko Alexy (1894-1970), célèbre peintre et écrivain slovaque qui contribua au renouveau de l'art moderne en Slovaquie.
Une autre œuvre, un bas-relief représentant une scène de la nativité datant de la fin du 15ème siècle, figure sur le timbre à 8 Sk, émis le 30 novembre 1995.
Cette "Adoration de la vierge" était située à l'origine dans la chapelle gothique du château de Hlohovec et exposée aujourd'hui dans la Galerie nationale slovaque du château de Zvolen.
The last cover above, with this beautiful illustration depicting the Bratislava Castle, could be described as a more artistic cover !
Two works of art are indeed reproduced on both stamps. The Sk 7.00 one, issued on 15th of December 1994, is reproducing a painting entitled "Girls" (1932) by Janko Alexy (1894-1970), a famous Slovak painter and writer who contributed to the revival of modern art in Slovakia.
Another work, a relief depicting a scene of the Nativity from the late 15th century, appears on the Sk 8.00 stamp issued on 30th of November 1995.
This "Adoration of the Virgin" was originally located in the Gothic chapel of the Hlohovec castle and is exposed today in the regional branch of the Slovak National Gallery in the Zvolen castle.
