Month of Forests 2017 in Moldova - special postmark

As it has been the case almost every year since 2007, the Post of Moldova has put into circulation, on March 15, 2017, a new special cancellation devoted to the Month of Forests ("luna pădurii").
This month of forests, aimed at raising awareness among the public and decision-makers on the importance of forests and their essential role in maintaining ecological balance, is also an annual event organized in Romania (since 1902) or Quebec (in May) for example.
I suppose that trees are also replanted during this month of March in Moldova...
This new postmark, designed by Maria Maximenco, was put into circulation in the city of Durleşti (MD-2003) located not far from the capital, Chişinău.

This postmark, featuring a tree as well as various animal species being part of the forest ecosystem (deer, hare, raptor), was applied to the illustrated envelope above. Thank you very much Nicolae!
This envelope (No. 01/2016, print run : 5,000), also designed by Maria Maximenco, was published by the Post of Moldova in 2016 and devoted to the "Codrii" Nature Reserve, the first silvicultural reserve in Moldova, established in 1971.
This strictly protected area includes areas with habitats of rare animals and plants of universal scientific value. All activities, except research and protection activities, are prohibited.
Nicolae has franked this envelope with three stamps, one of which (L 1.20) being part of a series issued on July 29, 2011, devoted to protected animal species from the "Moldova Red Book" (8 stamps), a common hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) here.
The two other stamps are part of a definitive series (6 stamps), issued on August 8, 1992, representing different species of birds, including the European green woodpecker (Picus viridis) and the European roller (Coracias garrulus) here.

Macedonia-Russia joint stamp set : landmarks of Ohrid and St Petersburg

On December 13, 2016, the postal administration of the Russian Federation put into circulation a very nice joint series (2 stamps) with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, devoted to architecture and, in particular to emblematic monuments of the 2 countries, located in Ohrid (Church of St. John of Kaneo) and St. Petersburg (Trinity Cathedral).
I had already mentioned this Russian version on this blog, through a nice letter sent on January 10, 2017 from St. Petersburg.
10 days later (on December 23), the Macedonian Post issued this joint set, with different illustrations of the two monuments, in a same sheetlet composed of 8 stamps (4 of each) and a central label (like the Russian Post).

Thank you very much Edin and Rade for this great cover sent by registered mail on March 23, 2017 from Skopje, franked with these 2 Macedonian stamps as well as the label (including the flags of both countries, the mention of this joint issue Macedonia-Russia and "Architecture - Landmarks", in Macedonian and English)!
As a reminder, the stamp on the left (MKD 44) represents the Orthodox Trinity Cathedral (built between 1828 and 1835) located in the south of the Admiralty in St. Petersburg, the former church of the Izmailovski Imperial Regiment, one of the oldest regiments of the Russian army.
The other stamp (MKD 100) is featuring one of the most famous tourist sites in Macedonia, the Church of St. John at Kaneo (probably built in the 13th century) on the shore of Lake Orhid and famous for its icons. The natural and cultural heritage of this Orhid region, one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

On this occasion, this new postmark (design : Lilian Iaţco) was unveiled, representing the Tighina (Bender) Fortress and the Himeji Castle in Japan.
Thank you very much Nicolae for this envelope above (design : Lilian Iaţco, print run : 5,000) including this cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012), franked with a personalized L 1.20 stamp (2009 model, printed in sheet of 24 stamps) featuring the flags of the 2 countries as well as sakura (cherry) flowers, one of the symbols of Japan!
This Tighina Fortress (11 towers and 6 gates), a witness of medieval Moldova, is today controlled by the authorities of Transnistria. This site has been the object of many battles, especially with the Ottomans or during the Russian-Turkish wars.
Himeji Castle is one of the oldest wooden structures of medieval Japan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.

Merci beaucoup Bret !
On March 8, 2017, the Czech Post has put into circulation an interesting stamp (24 CZK) dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the opening of Straka's Academy ("Strakova akademie" in Czech), the current seat of the government of the Czech Republic.
That stamp, printed in sheet of 50 stamps, was designed by Marina Richterová whose style is recognizable. Marina Richterová already designed some beautiful Czech stamps (also stamps for Vatican) in the past, especially those devoted to Mozart or Kafka.
I was lucky enough to receive the official FDC as well as the commemorative sheet regarding that stamp. Thank you very much Bret!

This FDC (print run : 3,400) includes a postmark from Prague, designed from a motif of a pendant lamp inside the building, while the illustration on the left shows the conference room where members of the Czech government meet (with the coat of arms of the country on the wall in the back).
This majestic neo-baroque building was designed by the architect Václav Roštlapil and built between 1891 and 1896. It was first used as a university residence for the children of noble and destitute Czech families, in accordance with the wishes of its founder, Count Jan Petr Straka.
After the Second World War, the Academy was requisitioned by the Czechoslovak Government, and is since 1993 the seat of the Czech Government.
This building is surrounded by a large garden including some statues such as the one featured on the left on that stamp.

And as usual, Bret was also kind enough to send me the First Day commemorative sheet above about that same stamp!

Portugal-India joint stamp issue : folk dances

On the occasion of the official visit of the Portuguese Prime Minister to India, the postal administrations of Portugal and India put into circulation, on January 7, 2017, a very interesting joint issue (2 stamps) devoted to traditional dances of the two country.
This joint issue reminds us of the close links between these two regions of the world for more than 500 years, both economically and culturally through, in particular, these very ancient dances with great similarities : Dandiya, the stick dance of Gujarat and the dance of the Pauliteiros de Miranda in Portugal.
As in the case of the Indian stamp set, the Portuguese Post CTT issued these two isolated stamps as well as a pretty souvenir sheet, bearing the orange and green colors of the Indian flag.

Thank you very much Luis for these two beautiful covers sent on March 23, 2017 from Braga ("Azul Internacional / Exprès" mail), franked respectively with the souvenir sheet and the two isolated stamps!
This souvenir sheet (print run : 40,000) with the two stamps including the one (€ 0.47 , print run : 125,000) devoted to the Pauliteiros de Miranda, this traditional warrior dance of the north-eastern region of Portugal, the city of Miranda do Douro in particular, located near the Spanish border.
The dancers' costume, depicted in the left-hand margin, is part of the collections of the Museum of Popular Arts, the stamp reproducing a watercolor by Portuguese artist Miguel Schreck (2015, collections of the Museu da Terra de Miranda).
That stamp on an orange background is featuring two dancers (often in groups of 8 accompanied by 3 musicians) performing a choreography called "lhaços", simulating attack or defense maneuvers using sticks as "weapons".

The other stamp in this series (€ 0.80, print run : 105,000) above, designed from an illustration provided by the Indian Post, is devoted to the Dandiya dance, a very ancient expression of devotion to the Goddess Mother Durga, mainly in the regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan (northwestern India).
During this dance, performed by men and women, colored sticks (called "dandiya") symbolize the swords of the goddess Durga, fighting against the demon king Mahishasura.
This dance is mainly in the spotlight in the evening during the Hindu feast of Navratri, held every year in autumn for 9 nights and 10 days.

Dominican Republic-Switzerland joint stamp issue : Natural landscapes

On November 17, 2016, the two postal administrations of Switzerland and the Dominican Republic (Instituto Postal Dominicano or INPOSDOM) put into circulation a joint series of 2 stamps devoted to natural landscapes of the two countries, in order to celebrate the 80 years of their diplomatic relations.
It was rather a so-called "parallel" issue since the two postal administrations issued different stamps, featuring water landscapes in Switzerland and mountain landscapes in the Dominican Republic.
After the Swiss version, I'm happy to share with you my first letter received from the Dominican Republic, franked with the Dominican version of this joint issue (two RD $60 stamps). Thank you very much Alejandro for this beautiful letter sent by registered mail on March 21, 2017 from Santo Domingo, the capital!

Alejandro (Vignieri) is the designer of almost all the stamps issued by INPOSDOM since 2008 and was kind enough to sign on this envelope.
As in the case of the two Swiss stamps, this series was printed in a sheetlet composed of 8 se-tenant pairs of stamps, with mention of this joint issue in Spanish in the top margin (above) and in German in the lower margin.
The Matterhorn, the most famous mountain in Switzerland (4478 meters high), as well as the Pico Isabel de Torres (855 meters high), located near the city of Puerto Plata (northern Dominican Republic), are depicted on the two stamps above.
This Pico Isabel de Torres is accessible via a cable car "El Teleférico" (inaugurated in 1975, the only cable car in this Caribbean region) and a botanical garden and a replica of the statue of Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro are located at its summit.
After using stamps from the Spanish West Indies between 1861 and 1865, the country issued its own stamps from 1865 (without mentioning the name of the country, only for domestic postal traffic). The first stamps including the name of the country were issued in 1880, one year before the Dominican Republic was admitted to the UPU.

New "Historical Means of Transport" stamp on Czech FDC

Merci beaucoup Bret !
The Czech Post already devoted in the past several stamps to paddle steamers as part of its series about historical means of transport, the "Franz Joseph I" in 2014, the "Primátor Dittrich" in 2015 or the "Vyšehrad" in 2016.
On March 8, 2017, it's this time the "Praha" steamer which is in the spotlight with this new stamp (16 CZK) designed by Pavel Sivko, printed in sheet of 50 stamps.
I was lucky enough to receive the 3 philatelic First Day documents below regarding that stamp. Thank you very much Bret!

The engraving (author : Bohumil Šneider) on this official FDC above (print run : 3,400) shows a standing helmsman steering a boat while the FDC cancellation from Prague features different naval knots.
This steamboat "Praha", inaugurated in August 1865, was owned by the Prague Steamboat Company (PPS), founded the same year, and sailed 3 times a day on the busy line between Prague and Zbraslav (southern district of Prague).

A nice maxicard (above, print run : 2,100 including 1,100 without the stamp) was also issued regarding that stamp, with a classic hand cancellation of the first day of issue, from the main post office (N°1) in Prague.

And as usual, Bret was also kind enough to send me the First Day commemorative sheet above about that same stamp !

The official launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 took place on January 18th in Madrid, where the headquarters of the World Tourism Organization are located.
The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development in the context of the universal 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This International Year aims to support a change in policies, business practices and consumer behavior towards a more sustainable tourism sector that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Several postal administrations have issued or are going to issue stamps on this topic in 2017 : Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, Spain, Pakistan...

On March 10, 2017, the Post of Moldova also issued a stamp (L 5.75, print run : 200,000) on the same theme ("Anul Internaţional al Turismului Durabil pentru Dezvoltare" in Romanian), designed by Lilian Iaţco.
A big thank you Nicolae for this official FDC (print run : 400) regarding that stamp, with cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012)!
The logo of this International Year (present on the postmark and at the bottom right on the stamp) represents the Earth and its inhabitants who travel in a sustainable, clean and responsible way, such as seeds, to illustrate the fundamental purposes of tourism : breaking boundaries, growing understanding and connecting culture and knowledge all around the world.
That stamp evokes some tourist landmarks in Moldova such as the Soroca fortress, the Purcari wine-growing establishment and the archaeological site of Orheiul Vechi (also shown in the illustration of the envelope with a map of Moldova on background, with also the National Museum of History in Chişinău).

Nicolae has completed his postage, to reach the tariff in force for a non-priority shipment of less than 20g to France (L 9.50 currently), with 4 other stamps on the other side of this envelope above.
The 3 stamps on the right are part of a series (4 stamps) issued on May 20, 2011, dedicated to garden's flowers (tulip, hyacinth and daffodil here).
The 4th stamp (L 1.00) is part of the definitive series (6 stamps) issued on March 7, 2015, devoted to the coats of arms of the main cities of the country, Ungheni here.

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) stamp set on cover from Gibraltar

Gibraltar was the 4th European postal administration to put into circulation this year its series of (two) EUROPA stamps, on February 6, 2017 precisely.
As a reminder, before Bridges in 2018, the theme adopted in 2017 by PosEurop for EUROPA stamps is devoted to Castles.
The Gibraltar Post has chosen to illustrate the Moorish Castle on these two EUROPA stamps (£ 1.50, printed by Lowe-Martin Group, each in a sheet of 8 stamps) designed by Stephen Perera from old photographs belonging to the archives of Gibraltar.
Thank you very much Joseph for this nice cover franked with this EUROPA series, sent on March 10, 2017 from the main post office of this British territory located to the south of the Iberian Peninsula!

This Moorish Castle actually refers to the medieval fortifications of Gibraltar, made up of ancient ramparts, gates and buildings as well as the Tower of Homage, the most famous part of the castle, or Gate House with its cupola roof.
These fortifications, one of Gibraltar's main tourist attractions, were probably built at the beginning of the 8th century, before being rebuilt in the 14th century during the 2nd period of Moorish occupation (Marinid dynasty).
This Moorish occupation in Gibraltar lasted 710 years in total (ending in 1462).
It should be noted that this same Moorish Castle was already featured on one of the EUROPA stamps issued in 2012 as well as on the two SEPAC stamps issued in 2015 or on the joint issue with San Marino en 2010.
Gibraltar issued its first EUROPA stamps in 1979, using the official logo only since 2012 (except in 2013)...

70 years of the Journal of Baekbeom in Republic of Korea - Special postmark and postcard

On March 2, 2017, the Korean Post issued a special cancellation as well as a prepaid postcard dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the publication of the Journal of Baekbeom (on December 15, 1947), the autobiography of Kim Gu (1876- 1949), considered by the (South and North) Korean people as one of the most important personalities of the country's independence movement and the struggle against the Japanese occupier.
Kim Gu has already been represented on several stamps in South Korea (especially in 2001 and 2015 for the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Korea) but also in North Korea (in 1993).
A big thank you Ji-Ho for this special postcard (permanent rate for a domestic shipment up to 5g, currently 270 won), with an additional vignette (130 won), including this postmark put into circulation in Nambusan here!

Kim Gu was president of the Korean Provisional Government in exile (in Shanghai) on several occasions and established the Korean Liberation Army during the second World War.
Rejecting the division of Korea after the liberation in 1945, he then campaigned for the reunification of the peninsula, still remaining today one of the few Korean nationalists respected both in South Korea and North Korea.
In his Journal of Baekbeom ("Baekbeomilji"), Kim Gu describes his search for principles on which his homeland could be built, with education at the heart of his liberation strategy.
This book is still today an important source of study of the history of the Korean independence movement and has been designated as cultural treasure No. 1245 by the Korean government.

This same postmark was applied to the two letters above and below, franked with two stamps (300 won each) + additional vignettes (60 won) to reach the current tariff (660 won) for the sending of an airmail letter (up to 10g) to the countries of the Zone 3 including France.
These two stamps are part of a definitive series (11 stamps) issued on November 11, 2013 following a postal charge adjustment by the Korean Post.
The nine small 300-won stamps of this series (print run : 500,000 each) are featuring various cultural and natural sites of the country, the Gwanghallu Pavilion above (built in 1419 and rebuilt in 1638) located in Namwon, considered as the place where Chunyang met Mongnyong according to the famous Chunhyangjeon story, and Baengnokdam Lake ("white deer lake") located at the summit of the Mount Hallasan crater, the highest point of the country (1,950 meters) on the Jeju volcanic island.

25 years of diplomatic relations with Poland - FDC from Belarus

The Belarusian Post Belpochta had already issued a stamp in January 2017 devoted to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.
Other stamps on the same theme (relations with Latvia, Kazakhstan, India and Moldova) are planned throughout the year.
On March 15, 2017, a stamp about these diplomatic relations with the Republic of Poland was issued, featuring the coat of arms of Belarus and Poland, a design that seems to have been chosen for all stamps in this series.
That stamp (print run : 60,000, tariff 'H' - 1.38 BYN : surface tariff of a letter up to 20g abroad), designed by Tatyana Kuznetsova, was printed in a sheetlet consisting of 6 stamps, with a herd of bisons in the lower margin.

An European bison (Bison bonasus) is also depicted on the first day postmark applied on the official FDC above (print run : 1,200) regarding that stamp. Thank you very much Alexander for this letter from Minsk!
The illustration on this envelope evokes the Białowieża Forest, the oldest primaeval forest in Europe, located on either side of the Polish-Belarus border.
This forest, a biosphere reserve, has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 and is home to a large number of flora and fauna species, particularly bisons (a species reintroduced in 1929).
The 2nd stamp above (20 kopecks) is part of the 16th definitive series (12 stamps with nominal values from 1 kopeck to 20 rubles) put into circulation on July 6, 2016, featuring the coat of arms of the country.
Designed by Marina Vitkovskaya, these unperforated stamps (print run : 3,150,000 each) have been printed on self-adhesive paper, each in sheets of 21 stamps.
Diplomatic relations between Belarus and Poland were established on March 2, 1992 and are currently being developed in the political, economic, cultural and scientific fields as well as in the field of regional and cross-border cooperation.

25 years of diplomatic relations with France - special postmark in Moldova

The Protocol on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the French Republic and the Republic of Moldova was formally signed on March 11, 1992, before a Treaty of friendship, understanding and cooperation signed on January 29, 1993.
Other agreements followed, in particular an agreement on cultural, scientific and technical cooperation in 1994.
Trade relations between France and Moldova remain modest at present, even though France is one of the main foreign investors in Moldova, in particular with the companies Orange (telecom), the Lafarge cement manufacturer, the Lactalis dairy group...
Both countries have their respective embassies in Paris and Chișinău.

At a ceremony held on March 10, 2017 (one day ahead !) at the National Museum of History in Chişinău (with an exhibition devoted to this France-Moldova relationship) in the presence of the French Ambassador and the Moldovan Minister of Culture, the Post of Moldova put into circulation a special postmark (the 10th of the same type this year), dated March 11, 2017, to celebrate the 25 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Designed again by Lilian Iaţco, this cancellation features two emblematic monuments of the two countries : the "Holy Gates" ("Porţile Sfinte") in Chişinău and the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile in Paris.
Thank you very much Nicolae for this envelope above (design : Lilian Iaţco, print run : 5,000) including this postmark from Chişinău (MD-2012), franked with a stamp (L 4.50) issued on November 3, 2010, being part of a series of 2 stamps devoted to the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the national flag and coat of arms.
That stamp, syncopated left and right, was extracted from the miniature sheet including these 2 stamps (3 of each), the stamps of sheets (10 per sheet each) being syncopated top and bottom.

Nicolae used 3 other stamps on the other side of this envelope above, including 2 identical (L 2.50)
being part of a series of four stamps (design : Pál Varga), issued on July 20, 1992, depicting the same supersonic aircraft, with different colors.

The other stamp above (L 1.50) is part of the first definitive Moldovan series (5 stamps) issued on May 24, 1992, depicting the coat of arms of the country.
This "Porţile Sfinte" in Chişinău, called the Arch of Triumph during its construction in 1840-1841 (architect : Luca Zauşkevici), is located between the Cathedral of the Nativity and the seat of the Moldovan government. This 13-meter high building was built to celebrate the victories of the Russian army against the Ottoman troops.
The construction of the "Arc de Triomphe" in Paris (50 meters high), between 1806 and 1836, was decided by the Emperor Napoleon I to perpetuate the memory of the victories of the French armies during the Revolution and the Empire. Under this arch lies the tomb of the unknown soldier, who died during the First World War.

Gentoo Penguin on my first cover from the British Antarctic Territory !

Very happy to share with you this very special letter franked with a stamp put into circulation by the British Antarctic Territory (BAT), this vast territory claimed by the United Kingdom in Antarctica (Graham Land, South Shetland Islands, South Orkney Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula).
This territory issued its first stamp in 1963 and today issues between 10 and 20 stamps each year often on the theme of fauna, flora, explorers or scientific expeditions in this territory.
The "Airmail Letter" stamp (£ 0.76) used here is part of a series of 6 "Airmail Letter" stamps issued on November 13, 2016, dedicated to the life cycle of the Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua), one of the emblematic bird species of this British territory.

5 stamps (including the same design as this "Airmail Letter" series) were also issued on the same day with an "Airmail Postcard" rate (£ 0.66).
The postmark is very interesting because it emanates from a temporary post office located on the Base Y located in Marguerite Bay on Horseshoe Island, on the west coast of Graham Land.
Until the end of the 1950s, this base housed a scientific British base (established in March 1955).
In collaboration with the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT), a team was commissioned in early 2017 to survey and restore the buildings of this Base Y, considered as a historic monument since 1995.

The cachet above has been applied to the other side of this envelope, including the geographic coordinates of this Horseshoe Island as well as an illustration showing the main buildings of this Base Y.
I do not know who was kind enough to send me this very special cover ?

After a first part (4 stamps) issued in 2014, the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan has put into circulation, on February 23, 2017, a second part (4 stamps) devoted to different Alpine lakes of the country.
After lakes located at high altitude (between 2840 and 3520 meters) in 2014, the four new lakes to be honored in 2017 are located between 2150 and 2790 meters above sea level.
Thank you very much George for this nice official FDC (with a special postmark from Pingtung City, south-western part of the island) regarding this series, each stamp having been printed in sheet of 18 stamps.

The first stamp at the top left (NT $ 5) shows Baishi Lake (2,750 meters above sea level) located between the counties of Hualian and Nantou (center-east of the country). Oval-shaped, this lake is the fountainhead of the Hualian River.
The top right stamp (NT $ 5) represents Wanli Lake (2,790 meters above sea level) located in Hualian County (the eastern mountainous coast of the island), an important sanctuary for local wildlife.
Jialuo Lake (NT $ 10), located in Yilan County (northeast of the island) at an altitude of approximately 2,240 meters, is the largest lake of the Jialuo Lakes network, consisting of marshes, an ideal habitat for hydrophytic plants.
The last stamp (NT $ 12) is devoted to Dagui Lake (2,150 meters above sea level) set in Kaohsiung city (south-western part of the country). This natural lake, often veiled by mist or clouds, is the deepest in Taiwan. It is also known for having the world's largest tree cover of the coniferous tree Taiwania cryptomerioides (one of the largest tree species in Asia).
