As in 2019, the postal administration of the Russian Federation was the first one in 2020 to put into circulation its EUROPA stamp, on January 15, 2020, whose theme this year is devoted to ancient postal routes ("Древние почтовые маршруты" in Russian).
This large format stamp (53 rubles, print run: 216,000), designed by O. Shushlebina and printed in minisheet of 8 stamps, was used on the cover below sent on January 16, 2020 from the city of Saint Petersburg. Thank you very much Youri!
This stamp illustrates the ancient Kholmogory postal route (postroad between Moscow and Arkhangelsk on the stamp), Kholmogory referring to a village located 75 km south-east of Arkhangelsk, near the White Sea coast in the Russian Arctic region.
This postal route was known as early as in the end of the 15th century, but only part of it towards the city of Vologda was in service.
The first offers to establish a postal service in Arkhangelsk were made to Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich in the middle of the 17th century. At that time, this postroad followed nearly the same path as the present-day Moscow Arkhangelsk highway: through the trading quarter of the Trinity Monastery, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Rostov the Great, Yaroslavl, Danilov, Vologda, Velsk, Shenkursk, and Kholmogory.
The oldest regular Russian postal service between Arkhangelsk and Moscow was launched during the reign of Peter the Great in 1693.
This stamp evokes an old parchment including this old postal route with period views in particular of the cities of Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Yaroslavl and Moscow (from north to south).

"16th Pacific Games - Samoa 2019" miniature sheet on cover from Wallis & Futuna
With almost 4 months delay it seems, the Post and Telecommunications Service (SPT) of Wallis and Futuna, a French archipelago located in the South Pacific, put into circulation on October 30, 2019, a miniature sheet dedicated to the 16th edition of the Pacific Games.
The First Day postmark associated with this issue is indeed dated July 8, 2019, this competition being organized from July 7 to 20, 2019 in Apia, capital of the Samoa islands ...
This miniature sheet (5 stamps) is present on the letter below sent on February 6, 2020 from Mata-Utu, the capital of this territory.
To note at the top right this special cachet put into circulation during the 73rd Salon Philatélique d'Automne organized from 7 to 9 November 2019 in Paris, including the SPT logo with the Eiffel Tower in the center.
The 5 stamps in this miniature sheet (print run: 25,000) represent 5 of the 28 sports (17 individual sports and 11 team sports) on the program of these Pacific Games: athletics, weightlifting, rugby, va'a and volleyball.
The contours of these Wallis & Futuna islands are featured in the bottom right margin on this miniature sheet which curiously does not mention the place where this competition took place?
14 independent countries and 10 territories participated in these Pacific Games (the new name for the South Pacific Games since 1999), New Caledonia (182 medals) having won the classification of nations (ahead of Papua New Guinea and the Samoa).
To note that this competition was initially to take place (for the first time) in the Tonga Islands which finally declined this organization for financial reasons.
It seems that no stamp on this theme has been issued by the Samoa, which however put into circulation a bank note (10 tala) mentioning these Pacific Games.

Between 1967 and 1973, Christiaan Barnard performed 10 orthotopic transplants and, with his team, 48 heterotopic transplants (between 1975 and 1983).
The South African Post had celebrated this medical feat with a series of 2 stamps issued on July 7, 1969, many other postal administrations around the world having done the same in the past 50 years.

Tribute to poet René Guy Cadou (1920-1951) on FDCs from France
On February 17, 2020 (general sale), the French Post put into circulation a stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the poet René Guy Cadou (1920-1951).
Relatively unknown to the general public, René Guy Cadou, despite his too short life, is considered one of the great French poets of the 20th century, with his out-of-fashion poetic style that marked his contemporaries.
The poetry of Cadou, who has remained loyal all his life to his region of Pays de la Loire (western France), evokes themes related to nature, brotherhood and love, but also to death (always present, but giving to life its reason).
He was praised by the greatest from his first publications, notably Pierre Reverdy, Francis Jammes, Jean Giono but above all Max Jacob with whom he had an abundant correspondence.
With other poets, he founded a "École de Rochefort" (named after the city of Rochefort-sur-Loire), a movement of friendship, freedom and poetic exchange.
French painter, sculptor, illustrator and poet Roger Toulouse (1918-1994) participated in the illustration of collections of poets from this "École de Rochefort", including portraits such as René Guy Cadou's one reproduced on this stamp, dating from 1947.
This stamp (€ 0.97, print run: 600,000), laid out by the young graphic designer and illustrator Ségolène Carron and engraved by Pierre Bara, is present on the First Day cover above, with postmarks from Paris (signature of the poet) of February 14, 2020. Thank you very much Joël!
Ségolène Carron was present at the Carré d'Encre in Paris for the preview sale of this stamp and signed this envelope.
The preview sale of this stamp also took place in Sainte-Reine-de-Bretagne (Loire-Atlantique), his hometown, with the same First Day cancellation, designed by Ségolène Carron.
A big thank you François for this First Day cover above with the postmark from Sainte-Reine-de-Bretagne!
René Guy Cadou met in 1943 Hélène Laurent (1922-2014), herself a poetess, who became his wife and who devoted her whole life to the dissemination of her husband's work.
René Guy Cadou celebrated his wife in particular in "Hélène ou le règne végétal" ("Hélène or the vegetable kingdom"), shortly before his death in 1951.
"Poésie, la vie entière" ("Poetry, the whole life"), the entire poetic work of René Guy Cadou, was published in 1976.

EUROPA 2019 (National birds) m/s on cover from Kazakhstan
On December 19, 2019, the Post of Kazakhstan was the last postal administration to put into circulation its EUROPA series, dedicated this year to national birds.
It is a souvenir sheet (print run: 30,000) composed of 3 stamps (500 KZT each), designed by V. Timokhanov, representing golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in their natural habitat.
This souvenir sheet has been printed with a special varnish applied to the birds represented (in flight and in a nest on a rock wall), with only the mention EUROPA in the margin at the bottom left (EUROPA logo not present on the stamps...).
This souvenir sheet was used to stamp the pretty letter below sent by registered mail on February 12, 2020 from the city of Petropavlovsk (north of the country). Thank you very much Sergey!
I'm not sure what the logo (including a horse) in the top left is referring to?
Golden eagle is considered the national bird of Kazakhstan, appearing on the country's flag (it seems to be a steppe eagle insteed ...).
This species of raptor is indeed an important symbol of the country and its culture, representing the strength, independence, freedom and the "flight" of the country towards the future.
For centuries, this bird appeared on the flags of the Kazakh tribes and, for more than a thousand years, eagle hunting has been part of the local culture. Eagle hunters are called "berkutchi", they capture young golden eagles, often in the nest and train them for several years.
Golden eagle mainly breeds in northern Kazakhstan, Altai, Ustyurt, Kyzylkum Desert and in the mountains of southern and southeastern Kazakhstan.
Four subspecies (chrysaetos, kamtschatica, homeyeri, daphanea) have been identified in different regions of the country.
This bird was also chosen to be featured on EUROPA 2019 stamps issued in Moldova, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Pošte Srpske).

"European Capitals of Culture 2020" joint set on cover from Croatia
Merci beaucoup Dragan !
With Galway in Ireland (after Dublin in 1991 and Cork in 2005), the city of Rijeka has been awarded (by the European Union) the title of "European Capital of Culture" for the year 2020, a first for Croatia.
Established in 1985 (Athens was the first designated city), this title allows concerned cities (and regions) to present their cultural wealth through many events, about 1000 for Rijeka (theater, music, exhibitions, architecture, dance , educational projects...) and many theatrical, literary, musical, dancing, cinematographic, architectural, cultural, sporting and gastronomic events for Galway (with a focus on the themes of landscapes and languages).
On January 23, 2020, the postal administrations of the 2 countries put into circulation a very nice joint set (2 stamps) dedicated to this theme and these 2 cities of Galway and Rijeka in particular.
The Croatian version of this joint series was used on the cover below, sent on February 8, 2020 from Rijeka. Thank you very much Dragan!

Favorit bicycle and postal uniform "B" stamps on FDC from Czech Republic
On February 1, 2020, the Czech Post put into circulation two stamps at the new permanent rate "B" corresponding to a standard domestic item up to 50g in economy service (19 CZK), the previous rate "A" (same type of sending but in priority mail) passing to 26 CZK.
These two stamps are present in the center on the pretty letter below sent by registered mail from Prague on the first day of issue. Thank you very much Bret!
The stamp on the right represents an employee in postal uniform (18th century), on horseback, playing the horn (the emblem of many postal administrations, including the Czech Post).
This stamp, designed by Karel Zeman, was printed in a booklet composed of 10 self-adhesive stamps (print run: 200,000 booklets).
The other "B" stamp above, designed by Petr Ptáček, depicts a vintage Favorit bicycle, green in color.
This type of bicycle, designed in the 1950s and 1960s in a factory located in Rokycany (center-west of the country), was very popular at the time and all the children of the country dreamed of having one.
At its peak, this factory produced 200,000 bikes per year, and the best Czechoslovak cyclists, such as the Pospíšil brothers or Jiří Daler who won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, used different types of Favorit bicycles.
Bret completed his postage with a stamp (permanent rate "Z" for a shipment outside Europe - currently 45 CZK), issued on January 20, 2020, dedicated to the painter Josef Čapek (1887-1945) and to a work entitled "The Organ Grinder" (1913).
The stamp on the left (11 CZK) is part of the EUROPA series (2 stamps) issued on May 5, 1998, devoted that year to national festivals, here illustrating the King's Parade, a tradition dating from the 16th century, probably connected with ensuring and protecting the harvest.
Nowadays this tradition is upheld only in Vlčnov and a few other villages in South Moravia.
This February 1, 2020, the Czech Post also put into circulation the postal stationary above (sale price: 20 CZK, unknown print run), with a pre-printed stamp (tariff "B") evoking this same postal uniform.

Stamp from the "Iconic postage stamps" set on FDC from Belgium
On January 25, 2020, the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation (preview sale in Gembloux) an interesting souvenir sheet (5 stamps) entitled "Iconic postage stamps", reproducing the 5 Belgian stamps considered to be the most representative of the important moments of the country's philatelic history.
The choice of these 5 stamps was made in collaboration with the philatelic clubs of the country and this issue coincides with the 100th anniversary of the famous stamp "Inverted Dendermonde".
This definitive stamp (65c) representing the town hall of Dendermonde (Flemish region) was issued on August 5, 1920, printed in sheets of 25 and 100 stamps.
On two sheets of 25 stamps and one sheet of 100 stamps, the central illustration was printed upside down and this stamp has undoubtedly become the most famous and most expensive Belgian stamp (€ 150,000).
When this error was detected, 18 stamps from the first sheet of 25 stamps were already sold by a post office in Ghent (all the other stamps concerned were destroyed).
As of today, 15 unused stamps and 2 used stamps (in Ghent dated August 13, 1920) exist.
This stamp inspired the designer of the First Day cancellation of this series (from Brussels on January 27, 2020) applied to the pretty letter above. Thank you very much Johan!
This "Inverted Dendermonde" stamp (engraved by Guillaume Broux) is of course part of this souvenir sheet (print run: 54,052), designed by Myriam Voz.
Three of the other stamps in this series are featuring definitive stamps bearing the image of kings (Leopold I, Albert I and Leopold III), the last one reproducing one of the 3 stamps in a series issued on May 20, 1920 devoted to the Olympic Games organized that year in Antwerp.
This stamp (discobole) at the domestic permanent rate "2" (not standardized NON PRIOR shipment between 0 and 100g, € 1.96 currently) was used on this letter above, with nominal value of 5c and surcharge "Pour les mutilés" of 5c.
As a nod to this failed issue of the "Dendermonde" stamp from 1920, this souvenir sheet has been printed so that none is completely identical (minimal slippage at the level of the upper and lower bands of the stamps ...).
Merci beaucoup Johan !

"Chinese New Year - Year of the Rat" stamps on FDCs from France
The French Post had initiated in 2005 (Year of the Rooster) a series (souvenir sheets composed of 10 or 5 stamps) devoted to the various signs of the Chinese zodiac, completed in 2016 (Year of the Monkey) after a cycle of 12 years and 12 different animals / creatures.
The French Post was then one of the first non-Asian postal administrations to issue stamps on this theme.
In 2017 (Year of the Rooster) and 2018 (Year of the Dog), collectors (personalized stamps) were issued and, since 2019 (Year of the Pig), official stamps were again put into circulation.
Ditto in 2020 with stamps dedicated to the new Year of the Rat, which began on January 25, 2020 according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
After stamps mainly designed by calligrapher Zhongyao Li, it is the Chinese artist Chen Jianghong (born in 1963 in Tianjin), painter and illustrator living and working in Paris since 1987, who again created the two stamps issued this year to illustrate this Year of the (Metal) Rat.
Chen Jianghong created two souvenir sheets, "Lotus" and "Wedding" respectively composed of 5 stamps at the rate "Green Letter 20g - € 0.97" (print run: 400,000 sheets) and 5 stamps at the rate "International 20g - € 1.40" (print run: 325,000 sheets).
To note that each of these two souvenir sheets is made up of stamps of different formats: one stamp in 33x40mm format and 4 stamps in 28x33mm format.

To note on this envelope the signature of the artist Chen Jianghong as well as Chinese characters ("Best Wishes"?).
The stamp "Lotus" (format 28x33mm) was also used on this 2nd First Day cover above. Thank you very much Roland!
The cancellation, representing a rat associated with a red Chinese knot, often used as a lucky charm, was also designed by Chen Jianghong.
In China, the Year of the Rat marks the start of a new cycle since it is the first sign of the zodiac, a symbol of ingenuity and intuitiveness, which allows it to cope and adapt to all situations. It is also a symbol of prosperity and good luck and the natives of the rat are intelligent and quick-witted but also not brave, materialistic and often concerned with amassing wealth and goods ...

Merci beaucoup Borislav !

On February 5, 2020, the Bulgarian Post commemorated the 100th anniversary (day to day) of the birth of Leda Mileva (1920-2013), famous for her poetry through her many children's books.
On this day, a stamp (2.30 leva, print run: 6,500) and a souvenir sheet (2.30 leva, print run: 4,500), designed by Maglena Konstantinova, were put into circulation, featuring Leda Mileva writing in an imaginary landscape, in the company of characters present in her books.
The stamp and the souvenir sheet are present on this pretty FDC below, sent by registered mail on February 10, 2020 from Sofia, with a postmark evoking a rabbit, main character of the book "Little Snow-White Bunny", among the most popular modern Bulgarian literary works for children. Thank you very much Borislav!
To note on this letter the mark "Таxe perçue" in French and the associated value (3.10 leva) in order to reach the tariff in force (7.70 leva) for a priority registered shipment up to 20g to France.

She was also Director General of the Bulgarian National Television (1966-1970), Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to UNESCO (1972-1978) and Member of Parliament (1981-1990).
I end with a quote from Leda Mileva: "I hope that the poems I write make children a little smarter, fairer, better. Give them the power to fight the ugly in order to conquer beauty ... Teach children to remember that the important thing is not the number of books they read, but what they have learned from them "...

"20th anniversary of the EMS Cooperative" joint stamp on cover from Wallis & Futuna

The EMS (Express Mail Service) Cooperative, an organ of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) created in 1999 in Beijing, consists of over 180 postal operators who have agreed to work together to provide the fastest EMS cross-border postal product.
On September 10, 2019, several postal administrations issued a joint stamp (designed by the UPU) devoted to the 20th anniversary (to the day) of the creation of this EMS Cooperative.

This joint stamp features a world map with the EMS logo at the top and the mention "Delivering Excellence 1999-2019 - UPU EMS Cooperative" in the language of the country (or in English), preceded by the UPU flag and the flag of the issuing country.

To note at the top left this special cachet put into circulation during the 73rd Salon Philatélique d'Automne organized from 7 to 9 November 2019 in Paris, including the SPT logo with the Eiffel Tower in the center.
This logo is composed of the initials SPT, two palm trees, a tanoa (a large cup used during the kava ceremonial - an alcohol made from this rhizome) and coats of arms of the 3 customary kingdoms (Sigave, Uvea, Alo, from left to right) constituting this archipelago.

This joint stamp features a world map with the EMS logo at the top and the mention "Delivering Excellence 1999-2019 - UPU EMS Cooperative" in the language of the country (or in English), preceded by the UPU flag and the flag of the issuing country.
The stamp (300 CFP Francs = € 2.52, print run: 25,000) issued by the Post and Telecommunications Service (SPT) of Wallis & Futuna, a French archipelago located in the South Pacific, is present on the letter above sent on February 6, 2020 from Mata-Utu, the capital of this territory.

"International Year of Plant Health" prepaid card from Poland
The United Nations (in collaboration with FAO) declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH), an opportunity to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development ...
This theme will be illustrated this year on stamps (Switzerland, Luxembourg, Moldova, United Nations, Vatican, Latvia, Portugal, Turkey ...), special cancellations (Moldova), ATM stamps (Spain) or € 2.00 commemorative coins (Belgium).
On February 12, 2020, the Polish Post put into circulation an attractive prepaid card dedicated to this International Year of Plant Health ("Międzynarodowy Rok Zdrowia Roślin").
Thank you very much Vera for sending this card above, on February 17, 2020 from Warsaw!
Designed by J. Konarzewski, this card (print run: 8,000) is issued at the permanent domestic rate "A" (sending up to 500g).
The pre-printed stamp evokes human hands protecting a plant and the illustration on the left represents, under a magnifying glass, several invasive species of insects (Colorado potato beetles, aphids, thrips ...), endangering the health of certain plants.
To note also the mention "Chrońmy rośliny przed nowymi zagrożeniami" ("Protect plants against new threats").
Vera used another stamp (3.30 PLN, print run: 168,000, design: A. Gosik) on the other side of this card above, issued on January 27, 2020, devoted to the Year of the Rat.
Unless I am mistaken, this is the first time that the Polish Post (same for the Romanian Post) has issued a stamp dedicated to Chinese zodiac signs.
To note the application here of the associated First Day cancellation and the original round shape of this stamp.

"200 years of the discovery of Antarctica" (joint souvenir sheet with Russia) on FDC from Estonia
Merci beaucoup Vera !
Political relations between Russia and the Baltic countries are currently very tense but a joint issue (souvenir sheet composed of 2 stamps) was however issued on January 28, 2020 between the postal administrations of Russia and Estonia, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica ("Antarktika avastamine 200" in Estonian).
This discovery was in fact attributed to Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen (1778-1852), admiral of the Russian imperial fleet, German of Estonian origin, and Mikhail Lazarev (1788-1851), admiral and Russian explorer, during their tour of the world between 1819 and 1821.
These two characters are logically featured on the two stamps of this souvenir sheet, at the time of this discovery on January 28, 1820, with their 2 ships (sloops) in the background, the Vostok and the Mirny.
The Estonian version of this souvenir sheet (2 stamps at € 1.50, print run: 14,000) is present on the official FDC below, with postmarks from Tallinn. Thank you very much Vera!
The Russian Post put into circulation an identical souvenir sheet (design: Ivan Uljanovski, print run: 27,000).
The theory of Terra Australis is much older and the existence of this vast Antarctic continent is proven as early as the 15th century
It was in 1819 that Antarctica was in fact discovered when British long-distance captain William Smith revealed the existence of this austral continent to the world on February 19, 1819 ...
Then in 1820 Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev, Irish captain Edward Bransfield (captain of the Royal Navy) and American sealer Nathaniel Palmer saw Antarctica a few days apart, but after William Smith for sure.
Bellingshausen and Lazarev were however considered to be the first to approach the Antarctic peninsula but the fact remains disputed because none of them docked to leave traces of their passage (the first docking took place only a year later, by the American sealer John Davis).

Special postmark from Saint-Valentin, France for Valentine's Day 2020!
Since 1967, the French village of Saint-Valentin (Departement of Indre) has put into circulation a special postmark showing two hearts and, since 1980, a pictorial cancellation featuring the famous Peynet's lovers.
I do not know if that cancellation is still used but some round postmarks have been issued since also with this pair of lovers, born in 1942 from the imagination of cartoonist Raymond Peynet (1908-1999).
This village, the only one to bear that name in France, is particularly in the spotlight each year on February 14, the Valentine's Day, and many collectors flock there to get some original philatelic items.
Such as the one above for example that I was lucky enough to receive, sent on February 14, 2020.
Thank you very much Joël!
This letter was franked with one of the two "heart" stamps (€ 0.97) issued this year (general sale on January 13, 2020, as every beginning of the year since 2000), having for topic the prestigious perfume house Guerlain.
The postmark above, featuring these lovers by Peynet and including the mention "Fête des Amoureux en France" ("Lover's Day in France"), seems to be the one issued especially this year for Valentine's Day.
To note that these two lovers by Peynet have been featured on French stamps in the past, in 1985 and 2000.

"Happy New Year - Year of the Rat" stamp on FDC from Kyrgyzstan (KEP)
After the Year of the Rooster in 2017, the Year of the Dog in 2018 and the Year of the Pig in 2019, the Kyrgyz Express Post (KEP), the 2nd designated postal operator (the other being the Kyrgyz Post) of Kyrgyzstan, devoted its last issue of the year 2019 (one stamp issued on December 2, 2019) to the festivities related to the transition to the new year, in the tradition of the Chinese lunar calendar, the Year of the Metal Rat in particular.
This stamp, designed by Maxim Cerevcov (Vitaliu Pogolșa had designed the previous 3 stamps) and printed in Moldova by Nova Imprim, was put into circulation in a sheetlet composed of 5 stamps + 1 label.
Maxim Cerevcov also designed the FDC as well as the First Day cancellation and the maxicard.
I was lucky to receive the very nice official FDC below (print run: 450) with postmark from Bishkek, regarding this stamp!
This stamp (100 KGS, print run: 8,000) shows a smiling rat, an image that can be found on the First Day cancellation and on the illustration on the left on this envelope, also with the words "Happy New Year!" in Chinese and English.
In this illustration, a rat is associated with an old coin (round with a hollowed out square shape in the center), the Chinese word for "counting" being a homonym for "rat" so the image suggests the auspicious idea of counting one's money as a new year arrives.
This association is also present on the "Year of the Rat" set (2 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) issued by Taiwan Post.
The Year of the Metal Rat officially started on January 25, 2020 according to the Chinese lunar calendar.
Above is the splendid sheetlet in which this stamp was issued, with a label inspired by the illustration on the FDC and the words "Year of the Rat" in Chinese.
To note this elliptical notch on the vertical perforations on this stamp as well as the words "Happy New Year!" in Russian, Kyrgyz, Chinese and English in the margins.
I was lucky enough to also receive the attractive maxicard above (print run: 400) associated with this issue, also designed by Maxim Cerevcov.

This association is also present on the "Year of the Rat" set (2 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) issued by Taiwan Post.
The Year of the Metal Rat officially started on January 25, 2020 according to the Chinese lunar calendar.

"Gandhi - Mandela" joint souvenir sheet with India on cover from South Africa
On July 26, 2018, the postal administrations of South Africa and India put into circulation a joint souvenir sheet (2 stamps) dedicated to two anniversaries: the 100 years of the birth of Nelson Mandela and the 125 years of the Pietermaritzburg station incident then involving young Mahatma Gandhi.
The South African version of this souvenir sheet (Permanent rate "Standard Postage" stamps) was used on this letter sent on December 10, 2019 from Cape Town, the country's legislative capital. Thank you very much Terence!
To note these surprising postmarks with mention "Paquebot" meaning that this letter was normally posted on board a ship not having an official post office. In international waters, mails have to be franked with stamps issued by the vessel's flag. These mails are then delivered to any post office located in a port without tariff surcharge ...
Between 1893 and 1915, the young lawyer Gandhi stayed in South Africa where he became aware of actions for human dignity and social justice, a method of non-violent civil disobedience, by organizing the struggle of the Indian community for their civil rights.
This incident at Pietermaritzburg railway station (the capital of the province of KwaZulu-Natal) took place in 1893 when Gandhi was making a journey between Durban and Pretoria.
Gandhi was indeed expelled from a train in which he was traveling because he was not white and was traveling in first class.
By directly witnessing intolerance, racism, prejudice and injustice against the Indians of South Africa, Gandhi began to think about the status of his people and their own place in society.
The two stamps in this souvenir sheet (Pietermaritzburg station in the background) represent portraits of Gandhi and Mandela.
To note that the Indian Post issued a similar souvenir sheet but almost 4 times larger than this souvenir sheet from South Africa!

Taipei Lantern Festival 2020 - special postmark on cover from Taiwan

On the occasion of this Taipei Lantern Festival, the special envelope above was published by the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan, as well as the postmark applied here, representing the main lantern exposed in Ximending (Wanhua district), in western Taipei (another giant lantern was on display in Nanxing Park (Nangang District) in eastern Taipei).
Thank you very much George for this nice letter, sent on February 10, 2020, stamped with the souvenir sheet (NT $ 15) from the series "New Year - Year of the Rat" issued on December 3, 2019!
This main lantern from the Ximending site, entitled "Hide and Seek", features a rat munching on cheese floating above a playful cat.
The designer of this lantern, Lin Shuen-long, said that the holes in the cheese represent the underground passages between the Ximending and Nangang subway stations. The cheese is also circular in shape to represent the tapioca pearls used in Taiwan pearl milk tea ...
