Série EUROPA 2012 en Grèce

EUROPA 2012 stamp set from Greece

A short post to share with you today this interesting registered letter, mailed from Chania (Crete island) on July 23, 2012, franked with the EUROPA 2012 stamp series issued by the Greek Post. Thank you very much Spyros :-)
These two stamps (€ 0.75 + € 3.25), issued on May 10, 2012, illustrate the theme "Visit..." chosen this year by the European postal organization PostEurop.
They've been issued (100,000 copies each) in sheets of 16 stamps (composed of 8 pairs) as well as in a numbered booklet (print run : 12,000) consisting of two pairs of stamps including only vertical perforations.

The two stamps appearing on the cover above have been extracted from one of these booklets.
Greece, despite its current economic problems, remains an important tourist destination in Europe, with its landscapes, its rich cultural and historical heritage.
As it is seasonal, Greece is also the birthplace of the ancient Olympics.
To evoke all these different aspects, the Greek Post has chosen to illustrate this EUROPA theme in a rather abstract way with a painting by Vaia Papazikou (adapted by Myrsini Vardopoulou).
An olive tree seems to be depicted on the stamp to the left, as well as a sun printed with a metallic effect ink, with a depiction of an island's landscape in the background, which continues on the other stamp...

Emission commune Allemagne/Liechtenstein

A Germany/Liechtenstein joint stamp issue

After approval in 1926 by the Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein, the "Federation of Palatinate Sections within the German and Austrian Alpine Association" was authorized to build a mountain hut in the Rätikon range, more precisely on the site of Bettlerjoch, a saddle between Augstenberg and Naafkopf (on the border with Austria and Switzerland).
This brick-built refuge, called "Pfälzerhütte", situated 2,108 metres above sea-level, was inaugurated in 1928. In 1950, after many years of inactivity and lootings, it became the property of the Liechtenstein Alpine Association (LAV) which renovated it and added an annex building.

Following a design competition organized by the postal administrations of Liechtenstein and Germany, the issue of a joint stamp was decided on June 14, 2012. The German designer, Corinna Rogger, won this contest and designed this stamp from an aerial photograph by the artist from Liechtenstein, Meinrad Büchel.
It is the German version of this joint stamp (€ 0.75) that appears on the first day cover above with an interesting postmark issued in Bonn (different from the other one issued in Berlin). Thank you very much Igor :-)
To note the discrete presence of the flags of the two countries at the top left of this rather successful stamp.
The Pfälzerhütte is now a Liechtenstein Alps' popular destination for tourists or students making numerous outings there throughout the year.

Hong Kong has participated for the first time at the Summer Olympic Games in 1952 (as a British colony) and was present at all subsequent editions, except in 1980.
At London, for the 30th Olympiad, the Hong Kong delegation is composed of 42 athletes competing in 13 sports : archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, table tennis and weightlifting.
The track cyclist Lee Wai Sze has won the third Olympic medal (bronze in women's keirin) of Hong Kong history after a gold medal in 1996 (windsurfing) and a silver medal in 2004 (table tennis).
The opening day of these Olympic Games in London, July 27, 2012, the Hongkong Post has issued an interesting and colorful souvenir sheet of four stamps.

This sheet appears on the official FDC above designed by Bon Kwan, also the author of the souvenir sheet. Thank you very much Kun :-)
The official logo of the London Games is included on each stamp as well as in the right margin with also some of the most emblematic monuments of the British capital : Big Ben, Tower Bridge, London Eye and 30 St Mary Axe.
This sheet, which is the sixth issue of the Hong Kong Post dedicated to the Olympic Games, was designed to give us a 3D effect with stamps evoking sports in which HK athletes have participated in the past : rowing and windsurfing ($ 1.40), badminton and archery ($ 2.40), table tennis and cycling ($ 3.00), swimming and athletics ($ 5.00).
These four stamps, each including the digits 2, 0, 1, 2, combine to form a sphere maybe symbolizing the universality of the Olympic Games.

Timbre "JO de Londres" en Lettonie

"London Olympics" stamp from Latvia

On July 14, 2012, the Post of Latvia has started a new series dedicated to sports with a stamp depicting a javelin thrower.
It is that stamp (0.60 Lats, postal rate for a regular letter to the world outside the EU) that appears on the first day cover below with a postmark from Riga featuring the same design as the stamp. Thank you very much Juris :-)
The issue of the first stamp (designed by Ludis Danilāns, print run : 30000) of this series coincides with the organization of the Summer Olympic games in London, ending at the end of this week.
As it was the case for the stamps issued in France or Slovakia, that stamp does not mention these games (neither the official logo nor the Olympic rings)...

To note that the Latvian Post had however always issued, since 1996, some specific stamps devoted to Summer Olympics.
Since its first participation at the Olympic Games of 1924 (Latvia participated at the Olympics from 1924 to 1936 after the first independence of the country, then under the colors of the USSR and again under the colors of Latvia from 1992 after the second independence), the Latvian athletes have won many medals in javelin throw : Inese Jaunzeme (gold medal in 1956), who was then the first Latvian Olympic champion athlete, Elvīra Ozoliņa (gold medal in 1960), Jānis Lūsis (gold medal in 1968), Dainis Kūla (gold medal in 1980) or Vadims Vasiļevskis (silver medal in 2004).
46 athletes (including six competing in javelin throw) represent Latvia (no medals won to date) at these games in London in 12 sports (athletics, canoeing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, modern pentathlon, shooting, swimming, table tennis, beach volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling).

Pointe Saint-Mathieu en France - Pli 1er Jour

On June 25, 2012, the French Post has issued in general sale a new stamp devoted to an attractive natural and historical site of France, the Pointe Saint Mathieu.
It is that stamp (€ 0.57, print run : 1,800,000), designed by Pierre Bara and engraved by Claude Jumelet, that appears on the first day cover of June 22, 2012 from Paris ("Carré d'Encre"). Thank you very much Joël :-)
If I'm not wrong, this is the first engraved stamp (except the "Marianne" definitive stamps) including the "Green Letter" postal rate.
The FDC postmark below, also designed by Peter Bara, was also offered to the public during a temporary post office in the commune of Plougonvelin (department of Finistère), where the Pointe Saint Mathieu is located.

This unique place (called "Lok Mazé" in Breton) is located in Brittany, in the far west of metropolitan France, above 20 meters high cliffs.
The strategic position of this headland has attracted very early many fishermen or traders and this site (then fortified) peaks at 2,000 inhabitants in the 14th century.
As it can be seen on that stamp, the Pointe Saint Mathieu is now composed of only a few houses, the ruins of a church built in the 12th century (on the site of an abbey that would have been founded in the 6th century by St. Tanguy) and a 56 meters high lighthouse (historical monument) built in 1835.

Pièces de monnaie en Malaisie - Série spéciale

Malaysian Currency - Special stamp set

Merci beaucoup Maryam :-)
After a first series (6 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) issued in 2010, the Malaysian Post has issued on July 16, 2012, a new set (8 stamps + 6 miniature sheets) devoted to coins and banknotes issued by the National Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia).
That day (July 16, 2012) coincides indeed with the issue of six new banknotes (from 1 Ringgit to 100 Ringgits).
I was very lucky to receive the two interesting First Day Covers below about this new series of eight stamps (60 sen each), with FDC postmarks from Pulau Pinang. Thank you very much Maryam :-)

The eight stamps of this series (printed with an original hexagonal shape) are actually composed of four pairs each showing both sides of the coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 sen, the third series issued by the National Bank of Malaysia since 1967, entitled "Distinctively Malaysia".
These new coins have been designed from typical floral patterns from different ethnic cultures in Malaysia, reflecting the diversity and richness of the country's national identity.
This series (including the vintage 2011) was released on January 16 2012.
The four stamps included on the official FDC above are devoted to the coins of 5 sen (with a "destar siga" cloth pattern of the Kadazan-Dusun tribes, State of Sabah) and 50 sen (with a "Sulur Kacang", a pea tendrils motif).

The four stamps on the second first day cover above are devoted to the coins of 10 sen (a typical weave pattern of the Mah Meri tribe, Malay Peninsula) and 20 sen (jasmine flower "bunga melur" with a "destar siga" motif in the background).
To note that the reverse of these four coins includes the value but also a red hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa sinensis), the national flower of Malaysia.
Fourteen dots appear on the opposite side, symbolizing the 13 states and the collective Federal Territories forming the federation of Malaysia.

Euro 2012 de football en Pologne, suite...

UEFA Euro 2012 stamps from Poland, new part...

In a post published on this blog on June 26, 2012, I shared with you two official FDC of the Polish Post about two stamps being part of the series of four stamps, issued on June 8, 2012, devoted to different stadiums of the country (Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan and Gdansk) that hosted some games of the European Football championship (Euro 2012) held from June 8 to July 1, 2012 jointly by Poland and Ukraine.
As a reminder, these four stamps were issued each in a mini-sheet of 8 stamps with a central vignette and a souvenir sheet combining the four stamps were also issued.
Kazimierz (thank you very much !) was kind enough to send me the two last FDC below this time devoted to the stadiums of Warsaw and Gdansk.

The first one above concerns the stamp depicting the National Stadium in Warsaw, the largest stadium in the country, specially built for this Euro 2012. The front of this ultra modern stadium evokes the red and white colors of the Polish flag.
This stadium has in particular hosted the opening match of this Euro (Poland-Greece) as well as a semi-final (Germany-Italy).

As for the three previous stamps, the official logo of this Euro 2012 is included on this fourth and last stamp above, devoted to the stadium of Gdansk (PGE Arena Gdansk).
This stadium inaugurated in 2011, evokes the form of an amber ring (the symbol of this region of Poland).
Some games of the Group C (Spain, Italy, Croatia, Ireland) as well as a quarter-final (Germany-Greece) took place in this stadium.

Timbre EUROPA 2012 en Allemagne

EUROPA 2012 stamp from Germany

On May 2, 2012, the Deutsche Post has issued a single EUROPA stamp dedicated to tourism this year with the theme "Visit...".
It is that stamp, curiously including a domestic postal rate (standard letter up to 20g) i.e. € 0.55, that appears on the cover below mailed from the former capital of the FRG, Bonn, on July 16, 2012. Thank you very much Igor :-)
The designer of this stamp (issued in sheets of 10 stamps), Andrea Voss-Acker, has chosen to feature the summer holidays ("Sommerferien") in Germany, in particular on the north coast (North Sea and Baltic Sea).

The sandy beach, the sun, the sea... and the traditional Strandkorb, this wicker chair (created in 1882) that is today the symbol of the beaches of northern Germany (a straight angular "North Sea" variety and a round rolling "Baltic Sea" variety).
This chair, depicted on this stamp, was designed with a small roof to protect tourists from the sun, the wind, the sand or the rain...
These summer holidays in Germany, from July 24 to August 24, are also called "Hundstagsferien" ("Dog Day Holiday") in reference to Sirius, the brightest star in the Canis Major constellation, which rises almost simultaneously to the sun at that time period of the year.

Série "JO de Londres" au Liechtenstein

"London Olympics" stamp set from Liechtenstein

For the design of its stamp series devoted to the London 2012 Olympic games, the Post of Liechtenstein had the good idea, as in 2008, to call upon an artist living in the country holding these games.
More precisely, it is the graphic designer Marc Weymann, from Vaduz, living and working in London for some 7 years.
It is that stamp set of two stamps, issued on June 14, 2012, that appears on the cover below mailed from Vaduz on August 1, 2012. Thank you very much Vural :-)
This issue also marks the 20th anniversary of the Olympic Sports Association of Liechtenstein (LOSV), the equivalent of the Olympic Committee of the tiny Principality.

These two stamps (issued each in sheet of 20 stamps) include the words "London" but also the emblem of the LOSV, composed of the Olympic rings, the country's flag (red and blue) and the crown prince.
I rather like the design of these two stamps evoking two sports, tennis (CHF 1.40) and swimming (CHF 1.00), in which athletes of Liechtenstein are competing at these Olympic Games in London.
The Liechtenstein delegation is composed in London of only three athletes : Stephanie Vogt (tennis), Julia Hassler (Swimming - 400 and 800 meters) and Marcel Tschopp (marathon) who had already participated in the previous games in Beijing.
To note that at the occasion of its 15 previous participations in Summer Olympic games, Liechtenstein has never won any medals (but nine medals at Winter Olympics).

Timbres du 2ème semestre 2012 en France

Here is below the special card received from Phil@poste, including the designs of the stamps issued during the second half of 2012 in France.
I'm not really enthusiastic even if there are interesting stamp issues including the "Nice-Place Masséna" stamp issued on September 17th or the beautiful engraved souvenir sheet (two stamps) devoted to the organ of the St. Jacques Church of Luneville, issued on November 12.

To note the issue of a stamp on October 29th devoted to my city of Lyon with its historic courthouse !
I hope that the First Day of Issue of the stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Bonnevay Law (named after a French deputy of Rhone department) about public housing will also take place in Lyon :)
For the fans of joint stamp issues : a miniature sheet of two stamps ("A Masked Ball" opera) issued on November 12 with Sweden as well as a stamp issued on November 12 (not depicted above) with the Principality of Andorra (edict signed in 1607 by Henri IV setting the official title of co-prince of Andorra to the King of France and the Bishop of Urgell)...

Timbre "JO de Londres" au Canada

"London Olympics" stamp from Canada

As in 2008, Canada Post has issued a single stamp devoted to the Olympic Games in London.
It is that stamp, issued on June 27, 2012, that appears in three copies on this cover below mailed on July 10, 2012 from the city of Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon Territory (north-western Canada). Thank you very much Jeff :-)
Unfortunately, as it's the case sometimes in France, an ugly mechanical cancellation was also applied on the letter on July 12, 2012...
I do not know exactly what is depicted on the special postmark (a cottage ?) of this city that has boomed in the late 19th century during the gold rush.

This self-adhesive stamp (permanent domestic rate, i.e. € 0.61 currently) was issued in booklets of 10 stamps.
Canada Post has chosen to feature a rowing event (double sculls), a sport in which Canadian athletes have traditionally successful results at the Olympic Games.
Since the first participation of Canada at the Olympics in 1900, rowing is actually the second sport (after athletics) supplier of gold medals (9 in total) for this country.
At the Beijing Games, Canada has won four medals in rowing (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze) and 18 in total.
To date, Canadian athletes have won seven medals (2 silver, 5 bronze), including two in rowing (Men's Eight, Women's Eight) at the London Games.
I really like this stamp, with the maple leaf in background, printed with metallic ink enhancing the ripples in the track of the boat...
In 2008, the Canadian stamp issued for the Beijing Games was awarded best Olympic stamp, that new stamp should not be far again from such a recompense !

Timbre EUROPA 2012 à Åland

EUROPA 2012 stamp from Åland

Merci beaucoup Liisa :-)
Your summer holidays in the Åland archipelago, between Sweden and Finland ?
It's in any case at what the Post of Åland invites us through its EUROPA stamp issued on May 9, 2012 (Europe's Day), devoted this year to the theme "Visit...", chosen by PostEurop.
It is that stamp (print run : 180,000), with a permanent "Europa" rate (currently € 0.95) that appears on the cover below mailed on June 27, 2012 from Mariehamn, the capital of Åland.
Thank you very much Liisa :-)

This stamp is designed from a photograph by Jacob Sauren (his first stamp for Åland) depicting a man, the feet in water, on a beach near the capital.
The island of Kobba klintar, accessible from the Western Harbour of Mariehamn, is featured in the background with the building of the old pilot station dating from 1862.
To note that this same station was already depicted on the stamp issued in 2010 by Åland as part of the common set of Nordic countries (with the theme "Life at the coast")...

Série "JO de Londres" en Lituanie - Pli 1er Jour

"London Olympics" stamp set from Lithuania - FDC

A short post to share with you today this interesting FDC issued on June 9, 2012 by the Lithuanian Post, devoted to the London Olympics in 2012.
Thank you very much Raimondas for having sent me this great cover on July 13, 2012 from the capital, Vilnius :-)
After athletics (marathon) and sailing, this new Olympic stamp series is devoted this time to boxing and canoeing (sprint).

To note the presence of the logo of these 30th Olympic Games in London on those two stamps and this interesting FDC postmark evoking a pair of boxing gloves.
The team of Lithuania is represented in London by 64 athletes in 14 disciplines (athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, gymnastics, judo, modern pentathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming and wrestling).
To note that Lithuania has already won a gold medal in London thanks to the young swimmer Ruta Meilutytė (100m breaststroke).
A little historic reminder : Lithuania had already participated in the Olympic Games in 1924 and 1928 (after the first independence of the country) and then under the colors of the USSR between 1952 and 1988 and finally again under the Lithuanian colors since 1992.

15 ans de la RAS de Hong Kong - Pli 1er Jour

15 Years of the establishment of HKSAR - FDC

On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong was retroceded by the United Kingdom to China, becoming one of the two Special Administrative Regions (SAR) of the People's Republic of China, the other one being Macau.
Like Macau, Hong Kong has a certain autonomy with its own political, legislative, economic systems... responding to the "one country, two systems" principle.
Hong Kong is represented for example at the Olympic Games in London with his own delegation, distinct from the China's team.
15 years to the day after, the Hongkong Post has commemorated this historic event by issuing, on July 1, 2012, the interesting souvenir sheet below.

A big thank you Kun for this beautiful official FDC above devoted to this souvenir sheet consisting of three stamps ($ 5.00 each), including a gilded inscription (15th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR) in the margin at the top left :-)
This sheet, printed in France by Cartor Security Printing, was designed by Freeman Lau from a representation of the national flower of Hong Kong, Bauhinia blakeana, which appears on the HK flag and coins...
The margins of this block as well as the three stamps evoke the booming economy of Hong Kong and some of the major landmarks such as the International Airport (bottom right), port activities (top right), the tower of the Two International Finance Center (416 meters, the second highest building in Hong Kong) in the lower left, Golden Bauhinia Square where the flag raising ceremonies are held daily (top left) and the statue of the goddess of justice located on the former building of the Supreme Court, current seat of the Legislative Council (top center).

I wanted finally to share with you the other side of this FDC above because it includes a message by the new Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Leung Chun-ying, who took office on July 1, 2012, the first day of issue of this stamp series !

Série "JO de Londres" en Moldavie - Pli 1er Jour

"London Olympics" stamp set from Moldova - FDC

The Post of Moldova had issued three stamps in 2008 on the occasion of the previous Olympic Games in Beijing, dedicated to track cycling, weightlifting and boxing.
This last stamp was reissued in November 2008 with an overprint in honor of Veaceslav Gojan, bronze medal in boxing (-54 kg), and the only medal won by the Moldovan team at the Beijing games.
22 athletes have been selected for the Olympic Games in London to comptet under the colors of the Republic of Moldova in nine disciplines : athletics, cycling, judo, shooting, archery, wrestling, boxing, swimming and weightlifting.

On July 21, 2012, the Post of Moldova has issued a set of two stamps devoted to these 30th Olympic Games in London. I was lucky enough to receive the official FDC above (design : Vitaliu Pogolşa, print run : 300 only !) with a FDC cancellation from Chișinău featuring the logo of these games. Thank you very much Sergio :-)
This (so controversial) logo is also included on these two stamps as well as on the illustration to the left of the envelope, above the Tower Bridge, one of the most famous landmarks of the British capital.
A cycling event (road race this time) is again depicted on the stamp above to the right (L 5.40) in honor of Oleg Berdos while the other stamp (L 4.50) is devoted to freestyle wrestling to emphasize the participation of the two athletes Nicolae Ceban and Svetlana Saenco in London.
Since its first participation in the Atlanta Games in 1996, Moldova's team has won five Olympic medals (two silver, three bronze) in four different sports (boxing, wrestling, shooting and canoeing).

Pli 1er Jour "Gardens by the Bay" à Singapour

"Gardens by the Bay" FDC in Singapore

To celebrate the opening in June 2012 (after 5 years of work) of a new extraordinary site in Singapore, "Gardens by the Bay", the SingPost has issued, on June 28, 2012, two just as extraordinary stamps !
Extraordinary by their designs (by Eng Siak Loy) but also by their size (120 mm x 40 mm).
I was lucky enough to receive the official FDC below devoted to this set. Thank you very much Terence :-)
To note that these two stamps are not the biggest (in surface) issued by the Singapore Post since an even larger stamp (98 mm x 67 mm) was issued on September 13, 2006, devoted to the International visual art biennial...
Graphic artist Eng Siak Loy, designer of the year in 2007, had already designed (among others) the series issued in 2009 devoted to the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
To note that the FDC cancellation below shows the logo of "Gardens by the Bay", featuring a dragonfly.

To give you an example in reference, these two stamps have approximately the size of the "Blue Whale" stamp (128 mm x 49 mm) issued in Canada in 2010.
But let's speak about this crazy "Gardens by the Bay" project which allows Singapore to increase even further its reputation of "garden city" initiated in 1963 with a wide tree planting campaign.
Located near the "Marina Bay Sand" complex, "Gardens by the Bay" consists of a large green area divided into three parts : two outdoor gardens and a garden inside a glass house (on a total area of 101 hectares).
It is that glass dome, designed by a team of British architects, home to plant species from Mediterranean and tropical regions, that is depicted on the stamp at the top on the FDC above.
The other stamp refers to Dragonfly and Kingfisher Lakes, one of the seven main attractions of this garden. The kingfisher depicted on that stamp, a Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) was already featured on one of the stamps of the definitive "Pond Life" series issued in 2011 in Singapore...

Série "JO de Londres" en Slovaquie

"London Olympics" stamp set from Slovakia

D-day for the opening of the 30th Summer Olympic Games in London !
Many postal administrations have already issued stamps about this topic. This is the case of the Slovak Post with this interesting set of two se-tenant stamps, issued on June 28, 2012, appearing on the cover below mailed on July 2, 2012 from Trnava.
Thank you very much Robert :-)
These two stamps (€ 0.90 each, print run : 200,000) have been issued in a single sheet of 50 stamps (25 pairs).
To be more precise, these two stamps evoke respectively the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games in London (organized from August 29th to September 9th).

As for the stamp issued by the French Post, not any mention of these Olympic Games in London (rings or logo) on the stamp above to the left ! Not even a mention of the British capital (like Big Ben on the French stamp)...
As for the French Post, the Slovak Post has apparently not wished to pay fees to the IOC (proportional to the number of stamps issued) to be allowed to include the Olympic emblem on that stamp.
This stamp evokes the ancient Olympic Games with this allegory of Victory (with the winged goddess Nike in the Greek mythology) and a warrior's head inspired by the famous Riace Bronzes (5th century BC) kept at the National Museum of Reggio di Calabria, Italy.
The Slovakian Olympic team will consist of 46 athletes at these Games in London, engaged in 11 sports with again a great chance of medals in canoeing (slalom). Since its first participation in the Atlanta Games in 1996, Slovakia has indeed won all its gold medals (7) in this sport !
On the other side, the emblem of the Paralympic Committee of Slovakia is well featured on the other stamp to the right with an interesting parallel connection of an athlete in a wheelchair with the Ferris wheel ("The London Eye") of London.

Série EUROPA 2012 en Bulgarie

EUROPA 2012 stamp set from Bulgaria

The Bulgarian Post is one of those postal administrations that are literally abusing collectors by declining each year in an exaggerated way its EUROPA stamp series !
A new example this year with a set of two stamps issued on April 4, 2012 in two booklets (each consisting of sheets of four stamps + 2 labels), two sheetlets (each consisting of five stamps + 1 label) as well as in a souvenir sheet.
To note however that these stamps are all different : sheets are imperforate at top and bottom for stamps issued in booklets, stamps issued in the sheetlets include a notch in the middle of the vertical perforations and "normal" stamps for the two stamps of the souvenir sheet...

The two stamps above (designed by Krasimira Despotova), with their vertical notches, have been thus extracted from the sheetlets (print run : 5,200 each).
Thank you very much Tsvetana for this letter mailed from Sofia on July 15, 2012 :-)
To illustrate the theme of the EUROPA stamps in 2012, "Visit...", the Bulgarian Post introduces us to two monuments belonging to the fortified complex of Tsarevets, a popular tourist site, located in Veliko Tarnovo in north central Bulgaria.
This fortress was home to the Royal Palace and the Patriarchal Palace during the Second Bulgarian Empire between 1185 and 1393 when it was conquered and destroyed by the Ottoman forces.
This site has been completely restored from 1930 and was completed in 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian State.
The stamp to the left (0.65 leva) shows the Baldwin's Tower (named after the first emperor of Constantinople) on the southeastern part of the walls while the other stamp (1.50 leva) depicts the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God, located on a hill inside this fortress, reconstructed in the 1970s and 1980s.

Centre de réadaptation des orang-outans en Malaisie

Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Malaysia

A big thank you Terence for this very special philatelic souvenir mailed on June 15, 2012 during your stay in Malaysia, on the island of Borneo (State of Sabah) more precisely !
This letter was indeed mailed from the Sepilok Orangutan rehabilitation centre in Sandakan, a town located in the northeast of the island of Borneo.
Terence has had the very good idea of franking his cover with a souvenir sheet, issued on May 28, 1999, being part of a series (four other stamps were issued) devoted to protected mammal species in Malaysia.

This souvenir sheet is devoted to the Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) with an impressive male's head in the left margin.
Orangutan is the largest primate living in Asia (only in the rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, in Malaysia and Indonesia), the largest arboreal mammal as well as the only brown-red coat's monkey in the world.
This species is endangered due to deforestation (tropical wood's trade, oil palm's monoculture), illegal pet trade and poaching.
Since 1964, this centre of Sandakan (43 square kilometers), founded by an English woman, is dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned orangutans.

Around 60 to 80 orangutans are currently living free (and 25 young in nurseries) in that centre run by the wildlife department of the state of Sabah.
To note that this centre also hosts other threatened species such as gibbons, bears and Sumatran rhinos.
After a process during seven years on average in this centre, orangutans are released into the wild.
This center is also funded by tourists (the entrance ticket costs 30 RM) who can see these monkeys mainly during their two daily meals.
Finally, to note the two interesting special postmarks applied by this centre on the other side of this letter above !

A short post to share with today you this interesting cover mailed on June 9, 2012 from Shanghai, China on the first day of issue of a new series of the China Post devoted to antique furniture dating from the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Thank you very much Jia Yi :-)
To note the special postmarks, different however from the First Day cancellations.
This set of four stamps (1.20 yuan each), designed by Ma Gang and Yu Shan, has the particularity of having been issued in two sheets, each consisting of six pairs of stamps.

The two pairs of stamps appearing on the letter above have been extracted from these two different sheets including margins with mentions in Chinese (what do they mean ?).
The two stamps on the left depict two pear wood tables : a drawing table dating from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and a square table carved with dragon designs dating from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
The other two se-tenant stamps to the right feature a small incense table with a stone surface as well as a table with carved legs with elephant designs (dating all from the Ming Dynasty).
