Hors Inde, il semble qu'une centaine d'administrations postales ont mis en circulation cette année des timbres consacrés au 150ème anniversaire de la naissance du Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), un record !
Le 2 octobre 2019, l'OETP (Office des Émissions de Timbres-Poste) de Monaco a émis un timbre (2,10€, tirage : 45000) représentant un portrait de Gandhi.
Ce timbre, gravé par Martin Mörck, figure sur cette lettre envoyée le 14 novembre 2019 depuis Monte-Carlo.
A noter à nouveau en bas à gauche ce cachet spécial mis en circulation pendant le 73ème Salon Philatélique d'Automne organisé du 7 au 9 novembre 2019 à Paris. Ce cachet représente la célèbre façade de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, avec sa flèche, ravagée par un terrible incendie le 15 avril 2019...
Outside India, it seems that a hundred postal administrations have put into circulation this year stamps dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), a record!
On October 2, 2019, the OETP ("Office des Émissions de Timbres-Poste") of Monaco issued a stamp (€ 2.10, print run: 45,000) representing a portrait of Gandhi.
This stamp, engraved by Martin Mörck, was used on this letter sent on November 14, 2019 from Monte-Carlo.
To note again on the bottom left, this special cachet put into circulation during the 73rd "Salon Philatélique d'Automne" organized from 7 to 9 November 2019 in Paris. This cachet depicts the famous facade of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, with its spire, ravaged by a terrible fire on April 15, 2019 ...
Le Mahatma Gandhi ("Mahatma" signifiant "la grande âme"), né en 1869 à Pordanbar (état du Gujarat), surnommé le "Père de la Nation" en Inde, fut un des pionniers du mouvement d'indépendance du pays, prônant la désobéissance, la non-violence et le concept du "swaraj" (autodétermination).
Il est assassiné en 1948 par un fanatique hindou. Gandhi a inspiré de nombreux mouvements de libération et de défense des droits civiques dans le monde.
A noter sur ce timbre, le début d'un texte manuscrit de Gandhi : "God is Truth. The way to Truth lies through Ahimsa (non-violence)" ("Dieu est la vérité. La voie de la vérité passe par Ahimsa (non-violence)"), datant du 13 mars 1927.
Gandhi a écrit ce texte dans l'ashram de Sabarmati, un ashram (un lieu retiré consacré servant d'ermitage) mis en place par le Mahatma Gandhi à Ahmedabad (état du Gujarat) en 1915, devenu aujourd'hui un musée.
Mahatma Gandhi ("Mahatma" meaning "venerable"), born in 1869 in Pordanbar (state of Gujarat), nicknamed the "Father of the Nation" in India, was one of the pioneers of the country's independence movement, advocating disobedience, non-violence and the concept of "swaraj" (self-determination).
He was assassinated in 1948 by a Hindu fanatic. Gandhi was the inspiration for many freedom and civil rights movements around the world.
To note on this stamp, the beginning of a handwritten text of Gandhi: "God is Truth. The way to Truth lies through Ahimsa (non-violence)", dated March 13, 1927.
Gandhi wrote this text in the Sabarmati ashram, an ashram (a secluded consecrated place serving as a hermitage) set up by Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad (state of Gujarat) in 1915, which has now become a museum.
