Happy to share with you this official FDC (print run: 5,000) concerning the two stamps of the EUROPA series issued by the Cypriot Post on May 4, 2020, dedicated this year to the ancient postal routes.
These two EUROPA stamps (design: Melanie Efstathiadou) are curiously identical, illustrating different postal routes implemented on the island, mainly in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, on a green background (€ 0.34, print run: 110,000) and blue background (€ 0.64, print run: 110,000).

Between 1571 and 1878 (period of Ottoman occupation), the coastal town of Larnaka (southeast of the island) was the main trade center and mail was scarce and carried by ships.
The first post office opened in Lefkosia (Nicosia) in 1871, the year of creation of a postal route between Larnaka and Lefkosia, letters being transported by horses, donkeys or camels.
From 1878, Cyprus being under British control, post offices opened in the principal cities of the country, the mail being transported by stagecoaches drawn by horses and mules.
From 1905, mail was transported by a train (goods and passengers also) between Evrychou (center-west of the island) and Famagusta on the eastern coast. This railway line was closed in 1951.
