1er jour "Mémorial Jean Moulin"

On 21 June 1943, the French hero of the Resistance Jean Moulin (who was known as Max, Rex or Régis), was arrested by the Gestapo (secret police of the Nazi Germany) in the house of Dr. Dugoujon in Caluire, a city located in north-west of Lyon (Rhône).
After several days of torture, Jean Moulin (born in 1899) died on July 8th 1943 in the train that transfered him to Berlin...
This house in Caluire, an historical monument since 1990, will become a Memorial dedicated to Jean Moulin that will open its doors in 2011.
66 years (almost to the day) after the arrest of Jean Moulin, the French Post has issued a commemorative stamp announcing the creation of this Memorial.

This nice engraved (by André Lavergne) € 0.56 stamp is included on the First Day Cover above.
The temporary post office was installed, only on June 20th 2009, in a piece of the ground floor of the house of Dr. Dugoujon, which is depicted on the left on this stamp.
The portrait of Jean Moulin to the right, is inspired by the famous Resistance fighter's black and white photograph, taken by his friend Marcel Bernard in 1939 in Montpellier.
Note that the letter above, mailed yet less than 5 km from my home, was misdirected if we refer to the "F.D." (False Direction) postal ink mark affixed... Strangely, no postmark was affixed on the other side of this cover...

The same portrait of Jean Moulin is depicted on the FDC cancellation, also designed by André Lavergne.
At this First Day of Issue, the French Post also proposed for sale a Prepaid cover (€ 9.20 for a set of 10 covers) bearing the same stamp, without any nominal value (with the Permanent "France Priority Letter" mention under the stamp) and without any reference to the year 2009.
Here is an example above.

As practically during each stamp preview sale, the French Post also proposed an engraving of this stamp (sold € 2.00).
Here is an example above above with the original stamp on the right and two First Day postmarks.
This kind of document is for me a nice souvenir of that day !

During my visit in Caluire, I used the occasion to take some photographs :-)
Here is above a view of the house of Dr. Dugoujon located on Gouailhardou square where this preview sale took place, in the room at the bottom right.
Two commemorative tablets were affixed in front of the house, including the one above on the right, a tribute to Jean Moulin by the city of Caluire (dating from 1946).
Before being arrested, Jean Moulin, then leader of the National Council of Resistance, held a meeting in this house with 7 other leaders of the Resistance movement in order to reorganize the "Armée Secrète" whose leader had been arrested in Paris...

I took the photograph above showing the room in which the French Post had set up its temporary post office. As often, there was no crowd...
It was rather moving for me to enter this house and this piece in particular with its vintage worn wallpaper, which keeps the memory of this timeless figure of the fight against occupation, oppression and barbarism and who sacrificed his life for our freedom.

On this same Gouailhardou square was erected on December 19th 2004, the monument above in tribute to Jean Moulin, inaugurated by Jean-Louis Debré, President of the French National Assembly.
This inauguration took place exactly 40 years after the transfer of the ashes of Jean Moulin to the Pantheon and the historical speech of André Malraux (French minister of culture).

Another monument dedicated to Jean Moulin was already inaugurated in Caluire in June 1973 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his arrest.
This monument above, symbolizing a man lying down, was sculpted by Georges Salendre (1890-1985) who made many works dedicated to the Resistance.
It was officially inaugurated by the Mayor of Lyon, Louis Pradel, and the Jean Moulin's sister.
