Le 4 avril 2009, au second tour des élections présidentielles en Slovaquie, le président sortant, Ivan Gašparovič (né en 1941), a été réélu avec 55,53 % des voix.
La poste slovaque lui a rendu hommage en émettant le jour de sa 2ème investiture, le 15 juin 2009, un très intéressant timbre doré à 1€ faisant partie d'un élégant bloc-feuillet.
Ce bloc figure sur la lettre ci-dessous postée le 17 juin 2009 de Bratislava.

On 4th of April 2009, at the second round of presidential elections in Slovakia, the outgoing president, Ivan Gašparovič (born in 1941), was reelected with 55.53% of the votes.
The Slovak Post has paid tribute to him by issuing the day of its 2nd inauguration on 15th of June 2009, a very interesting € 1.00 golden stamp as part of a elegant miniature sheet.
This sheet is included on the cover below mailed on 17th of June 2009 from Bratislava.

Avant sa carrière politique, Ivan Gašparovič fut procureur, professeur de droit pénal, président du Conseil national de la république Slovaque (entre 1994 et 1998) et fut un des pères de la constitution slovaque.Il fonde son propre parti politique en 2002, le mouvement pour la démocratie (HZD) et sera élu président de la république pour la 1ère fois en 2004 (un 1er timbre à son effigie avait déjà été émis le 15 juin 2004).
Son rôle est essentiellement honorifique, le pouvoir exécutif étant exercé par le gouvernement dirigé par un premier ministre (Robert Fico actuellement).
Le timbre doré ci-dessus est plutôt spectaculaire même si le portrait du président n'est pas très reconnaissable...Vous pourrez peut-être distinguer sa célèbre moustache :-)
Deux vignettes figurent de chaque côté du timbre : celle à droite représente l'emblème officiel du président de la république slovaque et celle de gauche le blason de la Slovaquie (la double croix d'argent est le symbole des trois saints les plus importants du pays, Benoit, Cyrille et Méthode et les 3 collines évoquent les monts Tatra, Fatra et Matra).
Before his political career, Ivan Gašparovič was prosecutor, teacher at the Faculty of Law, chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic (from 1994 to 1998) and was one of the fathers of the Slovak Constitution.
He founded his own political party in 2002, the Movement for Democracy (HZD) and was elected president for first time in 2004 (a first stamp with its portrait had been already issued on June 15th 2004).
President's role is mostly ceremonial, the executive power being exercised by the government headed by a Prime Minister (currently Robert Fico).
The golden stamp above is quite spectacular even if the portrait of the President is not very recognizable... You'll maybe distinguish his famous mustache :-)
Two attached labels are included on each side of this stamp : the right's one depicts the official flag of the President of the Slovak Republic and the left's one the coat of arms of Slovakia (the Silver double Cross is the symbol of the three most important saints of the country, Benoit, Cyril and Methodius, and the three blue hills evoke the Tatras, Matras and Fatras mountain ranges).
