100 ans de l'Université des Philippines

University of the Philippines Centennial

On June 18, 2008, the University of the Philippines (UP) began the many festivities celebrating the 100th anniversary of its creation in 1908.
That day was unveiled the four commemorative stamps issued for the occasion. They appear on the beautiful souvenir sheet below !
Myron, thank you for this beautiful letter mailed on August 20, 2008 directly from this University's Post Office (UP P.O.) !
The center of this sheet represents the national flag of the Philippines and the "oblation" sculpture, the symbol of this University meaning selfless dedication to the nation. The original of this 3.5 meters high statue is kept in the library building of the main campus located in Diliman, Quezon city. Replicas of this statue exist on some of the 11 campuses of the University...

You have recognized this same sculpture on the stamp in the lower right. The stamp above this one represents the official logo of the UP Centennial (with this statue again !).
The stamp in the lower left shows the brown and green UP's official seal, finally approved only in 2004 ! It shows an eagle above a shield with three parts symbolizing agriculture, engineering and science, the three initial fields of excellence of the UP.
This University, the first of the country for higher education, is now hosting more than 50,000 students in law, medicine, political and social science...
The last stamp in the upper left shows the carillon tower on the Diliman campus, another symbol of the UP. This monument, unique in south-east Asia, was built in 1952 and consists of 46 bells coming from the Netherlands. This tower is dedicated to the memory and courage of UP's alumni. A campaign to restore this tower has began, its bells having rung for the last time in 1988...
Finally, in addition to the 11 campuses located throughout the Philippines, the UP also proposes an Open University, a concept that also exists in France allowing the transmission of knowledge to all audiences. This is the meaning of the red hand-written word "Panghimpapawid" in Tagalog at the bottom of this cover (if I'm not wrong...), maybe Myron is taking these lessons ?

Myron dela Paz a dit…

Allo Eric!

Nice post about the UP. Frankly, I myself never knew some of the stuff you posted (such as the Carillon and the seal being approved only in 2004). I go to the Ateneo de Manila University, which is practically the next door neighbor of the UP. The Ateneo will be issuing stamps to celebrate its sesquicentennial next year and I look forward to their issue. As for the "Panghimpapawid" label, it actually means "Air Mail" in Tagalog. Literally, it is translated "For the Sky." I really like the word and I use it to label my international posts to (1) promote the renaissance of archaic Tagalog which many have forgotten and (2) make recipients interested in the rather amusing phrase. Happy Collecting! :-)
