Le régiment de Madras a fêté les 250 ans de sa création en 2008. La poste indienne a curieusement choisi d'attendre le 28 mai 2009 pour commémorer cet anniversaire et émettre un timbre à 500p représentant un soldat du régiment de Madras dans son uniforme actuel...

Cette oblitération montre l'insigne de ce régiment, surmonté d'un éléphant d'Assaye en souvenir de la bataille du même nom en 1803 où les soldats du régiment battirent l'armée Peshawa.
The Madras Regiment celebrated its 250 years of foundation in 2008. India Post has curiously chosen to wait until May 28th 2009 to commemorate this anniversary and issue a 500p stamp depicting a soldier of the Madras Regiment in its current uniform...

This cancellation depicts the insignia of this Regiment, topped by an Assaye elephant in remembrance of the battle of the same name in 1803 when soldiers of the regiment defeated the Peshawa Army.
Les français sont indirectement à l'origine de la création de ce régiment en 1758 !La compagnie anglaise des Indes orientales décida en effet de créer les 1er bataillons de ce régiment après le siège du fort Saint-George à Madras par les troupes françaises...
Pendant les 2 grandes guerres mondiales, des soldats appartenant aux 88 bataillons d'infanterie composant ce régiment furent déployés dans de nombreuses parties du monde (Perse, Afrique de l'est, Indonésie, Malaisie...).
Ce régiment est composé aujourd'hui de 19 bataillons avec des interventions récentes, sous les couleurs des Nations Unies, au Congo et au Liban.

The British East India Company decided indeed to create the first battalions of this Regiment after the siege of Fort St. George at Madras by the French troops...
During the two world wars, soldiers belonging to the 88 infantry battalions composing this Regiment were deployed in many parts of the world (Persia, East Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia...).
This Regiment is now composed of 19 battalions with recent interventions, under the colors of the United Nations, in Congo and Lebanon.
