150 ans du Mémorandum de la nation slovaque

150 Years of the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation

On June 7, 1861, the Memorandum of the Slovak Nation, prepared by Štefan Marko Daxner (1822-1892), was voted by the Slovak Assembly at Turciansky Sväty Martin (today Martin).
This Memorandum, which called for the implementation of the principle of equal rights and legal recognition of the Slovak nation in Hungary (the territory of Slovakia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), was then presented to the Hungarian Parliament by a delegation headed by Ján Francisci (1822-1905).

Merci beaucoup Robert :-)
The Slovak Post has commemorated the 150th anniversary of the publication of this Memorandum of the Slovak Nation by issuing, on June 6, 2011, an interesting engraved souvenir sheet consisting of a single stamp (€ 1.20) depicting the two portraits of Štefan Marko Daxner and Ján Francisci.
A young man hampered by ropes, symbolizing Slovakia, is also featured on this stamp with a woman trying to free him.
It's this stamp that appears on the cover above mailed on July 18, 2011 from the city of Trnava. Thank you very much Robert :-)

Robert has had the good idea to stick on the other side of his cover above the margins of this souvenir sheet !
The portraits of 12 Slovak patriots who were present at the assembly in Martin at the signing of this Memorandum are featured with also a winged figure looking towards the Kriváň, a mountain located in the High Tatras, a symbol of the country and of the Slovak national pride.
Whereas Hungary imposed at the time its nationalism and Hungarian as the only official language, the Slovak then continued, through this Memorandum, a struggle that lasted until the First World War with the proclamation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918...
To note that a silver € 10.00 coin, devoted to this 150th anniversary, was also issued in Slovakia on May 2011.
