"Willy Brandt's kneeling in Warsaw - 50th anniversary" stamp on FDC from Germany

Timbre "50 ans de l'agenouillement de Willy Brandt à Varsovie" sur FDC d'Allemagne

A l'occasion de la signature de l'accord de Varsovie entre la République populaire de Pologne et la République fédérale d'Allemagne le 7 décembre 1970, le chancelier allemand Willy Brandt (1913-1992), à la surprise générale, s'agenouille devant le mémorial des morts du ghetto de Varsovie (ghetto où furent entassés 450000 juifs et dont l'insurrection en 1943 fut réprimée sauvagement par les nazis).
En faisant ce geste, le chancelier allemand demandait pardon pour les crimes allemands de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, ce qui contribua considérablement à son image et à celle de la République fédérale à l'étranger, même si ce geste fut très controversé dans son propre pays. 
On the occasion of the signing of the Warsaw Agreement between the People's Republic of Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany on December 7, 1970, German Chancellor Willy Brandt (1913-1992), to everyone's surprise, knelt in front of the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes (ghetto where 450,000 Jews were crammed and whose insurrection in 1943 was brutally repressed by the Nazis).
By making this gesture, the German Chancellor was asking forgiveness for the German crimes of World War II, which greatly contributed to his image and that of the Federal Republic abroad, even though this gesture was very controversial in his own country.

 

Willy Brandt, chancelier fédéral entre 1969 et 1974, reçut le Prix Nobel de la Paix en 1971 (une première pour un allemand depuis la 2ème Guerre mondiale) pour cette action symbolique et plus généralement pour sa participation à l'Ostpolitik, une politique de rapprochement avec l'Europe de l'est, et la RDA en particulier.  
L'agenouillement de Willy Brandt à Varsovie il y a 50 ans marquait une étape importante dans le processus de réconciliation intra-européenne ainsi que dans la confrontation difficile de l'Allemagne avec son passé national-socialiste.
Le 3 décembre 2020, la Deutsche Post a mis en circulation un timbre (1,10€), conçu par Wilfried Korfmacher, consacré au 50ème anniversaire de cet agenouillement de Willy Brandt à Varsovie ("Kniefall von Warschau" en allemand), présent sur le pli Premier Jour ci-dessus, avec TAD de Bonn. Merci beaucoup Jens !
Willy Brandt, Federal Chancellor between 1969 and 1974, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971 (a first for a German since World War II) for this symbolic action and more generally for his participation in Ostpolitik, a policy of rapprochement with Eastern Europe, and GDR in particular.
Willy Brandt's kneeling in Warsaw 50 years ago marked an important step in the process of intra-European reconciliation as well as in Germany's difficult confrontation with its National Socialist past.
On December 3, 2020, the Deutsche Post put into circulation a stamp (€ 1.10), designed by Wilfried Korfmacher, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of this Willy Brandt's kneeling in Warsaw ("Kniefall von Warschau" in German), present on the First Day cover above, with postmarks from Bonn. Ce timbre reproduit la photographie (par agence Sven Simon) du chancelier agenouillé, ayant fait le tour du monde à l'époque et qui est devenue une icône photographique.
Ce timbre a été imprimé, comme de coutume, en feuillet de 10 timbres ainsi que dans le bloc-feuillet utilisé sur cette 2ème lettre ci-dessus, envoyée le 7 janvier 2021 depuis Berlin (encore merci Jens !).
Dans la marge supérieure, une déclaration de Willy Brandt concernant son geste : "Am Abgrund der deutschen Geschichte und unter der Last der Millionen Ermordeten tat ich, was Menschen tun, wenn die Sprache versagt" ("Au bord de l'abîme de l'histoire allemande et sous le poids des millions d'hommes et de femmes assassinés, je fis ce que font les hommes lorsque les mots leur manquent").

This stamp reproduces the photograph (by Sven Simon agency) of the kneeling chancellor, which toured the world at the time and which became a photographic icon.

This stamp was printed, as usual, in sheetlet of 10 stamps as well as in the souvenir sheet used on this 2nd letter above, sent on January 7, 2021 from Berlin (again thank you Jens!).

In the upper margin, a statement by Willy Brandt concerning his gesture: "Am Abgrund der deutschen Geschichte und unter der Last der Millionen Ermordeten tat ich, was Menschen tun, wenn die Sprache versagt" ("At the abyss of German history and burdened by millions of murdered humans, I acted in the way of those whom language fails").
