Tribute to Joachim Murat, King of Naples on FDC from France

Merci beaucoup Axel !
On June 26, 2017, the French Post put into circulation (general sale) a stamp dedicated to Joachim Murat (1767-1815), famous Marshal of the Empire, King of Naples and one of the greatest horse riders of the Napoleonic era, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of his birth.
The First Day of issue of that stamp (€ 0.85, print run : 900,000), engraved by Elsa Catelin, was held on 23 and 24 June 2017 in Paris (Carré d'Encre) but also in Labastide-Murat (named Labastide-Fortunière at the time), the Murat's hometown.
It is that stamp, designed from an "Equestrian Portrait of Joachim Murat" (1812, Louvre Museum), with Vesuvius erupting in the background, painted by Antoine-Jean Gros (1771-1835), appearing on the First Day cover below, with cancellation from Labastide-Murat. Thank you very much Axel!

The FDC cancellation was designed by Bruno Ghiringhelli from a portrait of Joachim Murat (circa 1808) by the painter François Gérard, one of the main painters of the First Empire and the Restoration, court painter under Napoleon I.
Son of a modest innkeeper, Joachim Murat knew an uncommon destiny, particularly related to his military prowess during several Napoleonic campaigns (Italy, Egypt, Austerlitz, Jena, Friedland...).
He married Caroline Bonaparte (a Napoleon's sister) in 1800 and was assigned by the Emperor the Kingdom of Naples in 1808.
He was imprisoned and shot in Pizzo in 1815, trying to regain his throne.

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) stamp set on cover from Greenland

The Greenland Post did not issue any EUROPA stamp in 2016, despite a topic ("Think Green") that concerned however the island, in particular ice melting due to climate change, but is curiously back this year while no castle is listed on this huge territory...
As a reminder, the theme chosen this year by the PostEurop association to illustrate the EUROPA stamps is dedicated to castles or fortresses.
On May 15, 2017, the Greenland Post issued two EUROPA stamps (15 and 16 DKK), designed from paintings by Buuti Pedersen, whose first Greenland stamps date back to 1995.

As usual, these two stamps have been declined in different printing ways : sheet of 40 stamps for each stamp, booklet of 12 self-adhesive stamps (6 of each) and sheetlet of 9 stamps each...
This EUROPA 2017 series was used on the cover above, sent on June 23, 2017 from Tasiilaq, the main town on the southeast coast of Greenland, where the postal services (POST Greenland) of the island are headquartered.
Buuti Pedersen was inspired by the Greenlandic nature to design these two stamps, showing different icebergs (with an imaginary gate), in the morning light and at night (in the gleam of the northern lights), reminding of the form of castles...
Unfortunately, as with the EUROPA stamps issued this year in Sweden, Denmark or Iceland (which had also chosen imaginary castles), the EUROPA logo is present on these 2 stamps with a tiny font... what a pity!

Philatelic Club 00-15 of Prague - new pictorial cancellation

On June 1, 2017, a new picturial cancellation was put into circulation in Prague (main post office No. 1) dedicated to the philatelic club KF 00-15, bringing together thematic stamp collectors.
It is that cancellation, including the mention "Navštivte Internetové stránky" ("Let's visit the website") as well as the logo of this club, which was applied on the letter below. Thank you very much Slavek!
A similar cancellation was issued in 2014 to celebrate the first anniversary of the commissioning of the club's website.
On June 1, 2017, the club KF 00-15 launched two new websites (addresses also mentioned on this cancellation) respectively dedicated to different specialized fields (special postmarks, registered labels...) and to the specific blueprints (NEOPOST machines) used by the Czech Post.

I have already mentioned on this blog the permanent "A" stamp used here (trumpet player on a peacock), issued on October 27, 2011 in sheet of 9 stamps + 12 customizable coupons.
The attached coupon to the left mentions the 70th anniversary of this same Philatelic Club 00-15 of Prague, celebrated in 2013.

Merci beaucoup Johan !

Designed by Leen Depooter, this sheetlet was printed in 63,393 copies.

That stamp is devoted to the orthopedist Albin Lambotte (1866-1955) and in particular to his work concerning the operative treatment of fractures.
Albin Lambotte is considered as one of the pioneers of traumatology and as the father of osteosynthesis, the reduction and internal fixation of a bone fracture with implantable metallic devices.
Another Belgian medical doctor, Robert Danis (1880-1962) also carried out first-level work on osteosynthesis.
Lambotte was the first in 1901 to develop and use an external fixator to treat open fractures.
In 1907, he published his founding book "Operative intervention in recent and old fractures considered particularly from the point of view of osteosynthesis".

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) m/s on cover from Sweden

Following the unusual issue of a single EUROPA stamp in 2016 (Think Green), the Swedish Post (postnord sverige) has renewed this year with its tradition of putting into circulation a souvenir sheet (2 stamp) to illustrate the theme of castles ("slott" in Swedish).
This souvenir sheet, issued on March 16, 2017 and designed by Jakob Monefeldt (based on photographs by Mats Granlöf and Anders Norrsell), is devoted to the Wanås Castle located in the historic province of Scania (south of the country).
A big thank you Rune for this beautiful letter sent on June 15, 2017 from the town of Torslanda (part of the municipality of Göteborg), franked with this souvenir sheet consisting of two permanent domestic "Brev" (up to 50g "Letter") stamps, SEK 7.00 currently.

This Wanås Castle was probably built from the middle of the 15th century and was then burned by Swedish troops during the Seven Years' Northern Wars before being rebuilt in 1566.
This castle is today a place where history, art and nature meet, especially through its modern sculpture park, celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
This collection of sculptures consists of 70 permanent works of art, created especially for the Wanås Foundation (established in 1994) and the Wanås Konst - Art and Learning Center.
75,000 people visit this park each year and 9,000 children participate in educational activities.
The two stamps in this souvenir sheet respectively show the white facade of this castle and one of the works present in this park entitled "Double Dribble" (2010, artist : Anne Thulin) made up of large red balls placed in the tops of the trees.
Another work, "I Will Stop Loving You" by Malin Holmberg, a yellow painting on the ground and tree trunks, is also reproduced on this souvenir sheet's background.

25 years of diplomatic relations with Israel - special postmark in Moldova

The Republic of Moldova and the State of Israel formally established diplomatic relations on June 22, 1992, the Hebrew state having previously recognized the independence of Moldova on December 25, 1991.
The two countries have enjoyed good relations since then, especially in the political (anti-terrorism) and economic (agriculture, infrastructure...) fields.
Moldova opened an embassy in Tel Aviv since 1994, the Israeli ambassador to Ukraine (non-resident today) being accredited in Moldova since 1994 as well.
25 years later (to the day), the Post of Moldova has put into circulation a new special postmark devoted to relations between the two countries.

Designed again by Lilian Iaţco, this interesting postmark is featuring the buildings of the parliaments of Moldova and Israel (Knesset).
Thank you very much Nicolae for this envelope above (design : Lilian Iaţco, print run : 5,000) including this cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012) of June 22, 2017, franked with a personalized stamp (L 1.75 - model of November 17, 2015) representing the coat of arms of the two countries!
As a reminder, this 2nd envelope was specially edited to celebrate the 25 years of diplomatic relations between Moldova and countries of the former USSR and the rest of the world (outside Europe).

Nicolae completed his postage with 4 other stamps on the back of this envelope above, in order to reach the tariff in force for a non-priority shipment up to 20g sent to France (L 9.50 currently).
The stamp on the right (L 4.50), issued on November 3, 2010, is part of a series of 2 stamps devoted to the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the national flag and coat of arms.
That stamp, syncopated left and right, was extracted from the miniature sheet including these 2 stamps (3 of each), the stamps of sheets (10 per sheet each) being syncopated top and bottom.
The three other stamps are part of various definitive series : wildflowers (L 0.25), issued on April 15, 2016, town's coats of arms (L 1.00), issued on February 10, 2017 and garden flowers (L 2.00), issued on May 20, 2011.

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) stamp set on cover from Liechtenstein

In my humble opinion, this is one of the most beautiful EUROPA series issued this year (on March 6, 2017) and I'm therefore happy to write about this letter from Liechtenstein, sent on June 27, 2017 from Vaduz, the capital. Thank you very much Vural!
To illustrate the theme of castles and fortresses, the Liechtenstein Post has logically chosen the famous princely castle of Vaduz as well as the castle of Gutenberg in Balzers.
These two stamps (CHF 1.50 each) have been designed by Swiss illustrator and graphic designer Angelo Boog and each printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps (by Cartor Security Printing, France).

Vaduz Castle, located about 120 meters above the capital of Liechtenstein, is today one of the emblems of the country, official residence of the princely family since 1939.
Built probably from the 12th century (the imposing keep in particular), this building was first mentioned in 1322 and became the property of the Princely House of Liechtenstein in 1712.
Gutenberg Castle was built in the High Middle Ages in Balzers (the southernmost town of Liechtenstein) on an about 70 meters high's hill, inhabited since the Neolithic era.
This castle was originally a church with a cemetery and then gradually fell into ruin over the centuries before being restored between 1905 and 1912.

"Nature in Demilitarized Zone" (Part II) stamp set on FDC from South Korea

Since 1953 and the Korean Armistice Agreement, a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) divides the Korean Peninsula in two, with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north and the Republic of Korea in the south.
This Demilitarized Zone is a buffer zone that maintains a distance between the troops of the two countries in order to prevent further military conflict.
A 248 km long military demarcation line (MDL) was created and the Demilitarized Zone extends on 2 km on each side of this line.
For more than 60 years, this area has been virtually inaccessible to humans and is today one of the most ecologically valuable areas in the world, in terms of ecology, biodiversity or protection of endangered species (flora or fauna).

After a first series (2 stamps) issued on November 24, 2016, the Korean Post (in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment) released a second series (2 stamps) on June 5, 2017 devoted to nature in this demilitarized zone.
Designed by Park Eun-kyung, these two 330 won stamps (print run : 350,000 each) have been printed by Royal Joh. Enschedé in a same sheet composed of 20 stamps (10 of each), with a UV lacquer and an iron powder effect.
These two se-tenant stamps appear on the letter above with FDC cancellation from Nambusan. Thank you very much Ji-Ho!
After a Great tit and a group of Black-faced spoonbills in 2016, a squirrel next to a soldier's helmet (with a bullet hole) and a kingfisher on a barbed wire are featured on this new series.

"300 years of the birth of Maria Theresa" joint m/s on cover from Austria

I had already the chance to publish on this blog some letters received from Ukraine, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary franked with this joint souvenir sheet dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest European leaders of history, Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780), Empress consort of the Holy Roman Empire.
A 5th country participated in this joint issue, Austria, and I'm happy to share with you this cover sent on June 21, 2017 from Vienna, franked with this nice souvenir sheet. Thank you very much Edna!
As a reminder, this joint souvenir sheet, issued on May 13, 2017, reproduces a portrait of Maria Theresa (probably dating from the mid-18th century, unknown author) preserved in the Museum of Military History in Vienna.

"100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into WWI" stamp - FDC from France

Tomorrow, July 14, 2017, American troops will parade during the French National Day military parade, in front of the French President and the American President, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United States of America's entry into WWI.
On June 23, 2017, the French Post put into circulation (First Day of Issue) a stamp dedicated to this anniversary, created and engraved by André Lavergne.
It is that stamp (€ 1.30, print run : 900,000) which appears on the first day cover below, with cancellation from Saint-Nazaire (44), the city where the first American soldiers (nearly 15,000 men) landed on June 26, 1917. Thank you very much François!

This same cancellation (designed by André Lavergne), featuring the French and American flags, was also offered on 23 and 24 June 2017 in the cities of Boulogne-sur-Mer, Boulazac and Paris (Carré d'Encre).
Boulogne-sur-Mer is the port where General Pershing (featured on the stamp), the commander-in-chief of the American Expeditionary Force, arrived in France on June 13, 1917.
To counter the "submarine warfare" of the Germans against American ships responsible for supplying Europe, US President Wilson formally declared war to Germany on April 6, 1917.
This first American military engagement in Europe (on the Eastern front mainly, from September 1918), breaking then with US isolationist policy, concerned more than 4,350,000 soldiers, more than 120 000 having been killed and 250 000 wounded.

2017 General Assembly of Philandorre - special postmark from Canillo

After Castelnaudary (France) in 2015 and Ordino in 2016, the General Assembly of the philatelic association Philandorre was again organized this year in the Principality of Andorra, in the parish of Canillo precisely (northeast of the country).
As a reminder, Philandorre is an association founded in 1977 to promote and develop the philately of Andorra, in particular by publishing philatelic and postal studies.
On the occasion of this General Assembly, a special postmark was put into circulation in Ordino (AD 100) on 26 May (maig en Catalan) 2017, referring to the 40 years of Philandorre.

This postmark is very similar to the FDC cancellation regarding the stamp (€ 0.85, print run : 70,000) used on this letter, put into circulation on March 9, 2017 to celebrate this 40th anniversary of Philandorre.
Thank you very much Olivier for this very special cover!
As a reminder, that stamp was printed in a sheetlet of 10 stamps with an original layout (5 stamps with attached label to the right and 5 stamps with label to the left) and an imposing central label also featuring the Philandorre's logo.
This logo (original work by Apolline Planque) depicts the church of Sant Joan de Caselles, one of the most beautiful examples of the exceptional Romanesque heritage in Andorra, located in the municipality of Canillo.

Special "Olympic Days 2017" postcard sent from Paris, free of postal charge

On 23 and 24 June 2017, the city of Paris, in collaboration with the French National Olympic Committee (CNOSF) and the Organizing Committee for the bid for Paris at the Olympic Games in 2024, organized the Olympic Days with the slogan "Je suis en mode JO" ("I'm in Olympic Days mode").
Over the course of two days, the heart of Paris has transformed itself into an ephemeral Olympic park, dedicated to the celebration of sport and Olympism, with in particular introductions to some thirty Olympic and Paralympic sporting disciplines and demonstrations by many French athletes.

The French Post, one of the official partners of the bidding committee Paris 2024, was present during these Olympic Days and offered to the public several types of postcards, including two "generic" cards (print run : 8,000 each) such as the one above.
Four coloring cards (print run : 4,000 each) were also offered and all of these cards (32,000 in total) were distributed during these two days.
The card above shows one of the most spectacular installations, a floating track (100 meters long) located on the Seine river between the Alexandre III bridge and the Invalides bridge, with (of course!) the Eiffel Tower in the background.

Thank you very much Pierre for having sent me this very special card, with a mechanical cancellation of June 24, 2017 applied during its processing by the industrial mail platform (PIC No 25635A) of Gonesse Paris Nord!
You did not need to frank this postcard, including the words "Ne pas affranchir - Ecopli" ("No stamp needed") as well as "This card can not be sold - 100% recycled paper" in French.
Doing something good for the Paris 2024's bid and for the environment!

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) stamp set on cover from Macedonia

Happy to share with you this beautiful letter from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, sent by registered mail from Skopje on June 13, 2017, franked with the EUROPA series (a souvenir sheet and 2 stamps) issued on May 8, 2017, dedicated this year to the theme of castles.
Thank you very much Edin and Rade!
For information or reminder, the Macedonian Post did not wish (stupid political decision!) to use last year the joint drawing, designed by Cypriot artist Doxia Sergidou, on its EUROPA series...
I am not going to come back here on political tensions between Macedonia and neighboring Greece, but the current flag (a sun on a red sky, adopted in 1995) had to be changed to replace the original Vergina Sun, Greece arguing that this symbol was part of Greek heritage and culture...

It is that flag which is present in the background on the two stamps of this EUROPA series above on the left (MKD 73, design : L.Kufalo, print run : 10,000 each), printed in sheet of 9 stamps, with the EUROPA logo included in the upper and lower margins.
These 2 stamps respectively represent the main gate of the Samuel's Fortress dominating the old town of Ohrid (southwestern part of the country, on the north shore of Lake Ohrid), a building largely developed and redesigned in the 10th century during the reign of Bulgarian Tsar Samuel I, and a view of the ramparts of the Skopje Fortress, built in the 10th century on the top of a rocky promontory overlooking the capital of the country.
This site underwent numerous assaults, passing into the hands of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the 14th century and was then destroyed during the Great Austro-Turkish War at the end of the 17th century.
The fortress was rebuilt by the Turks from 1700 and was again badly damaged during the 1963 earthquake before being largely restored after the country's independence in 1991.

On that same letter was used the stamp (MKD 144, design : L. Zhivkovska Donev) extracted from the souvenir sheet (print run : 7,000) of this same EUROPA series, the margins of which have been applied to the other side of this envelope above.
This souvenir sheet was designed from a 17th century representation of the city of Skopje, surrounded by ramparts and made up of numerous minarets.
During the same Great Austro-Turkish war, Skopje was completely burned down and destroyed in 1689 by the Austrians in order to stem a cholera epidemic (but probably also to avenge the damage done to Vienna by the Ottomans).

Tribute to legionnaire Heliodor Píka on Czech FDC

Merci beaucoup Bret !
On June 7, 2017, the Czech Post issued a stamp paying tribute to soldier and legionnaire Heliodor Píka (1897-1949) on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of his birth.
Heliodor Píka was a Czechoslovak soldier and legionnaire, one of the main representatives of the anti-Nazi movement during the Second World War, who was a victim of Communist terror.
It is that stamp (37 CZK), designed by Eva Hašková and engraved by Václav Fajt, which appears on the official FDC below (print run : 3500), with cancellation from Prague representing one of the many decorations received by Heliodor Píka for his action during the 1st and 2nd World Wars, the American Legion of Merit Order here. Thank you very much Bret!

On that stamp, Heliodor Píka is featured next to the battle flag of the Czechoslovak 2nd Airborne Brigade.
The engraving on the left on this envelope evokes Communism and the Plzeň-Bory prison where Heliodor Píka was hanged in 1949 after being convicted of treason in a political trial (he was actually accused of knowing too much things about the network of Soviet gulags), after the coup of February 1948.
Legionnaire during the First World War, officer of the Czechoslovak Army, military attaché in the Balkans, head of the Czechoslovak military mission in Moscow during the Second World War, holder of some thirty crosses and military decorations, diplomat, Heliodor Píka was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the General Staff of the Czechoslovak Army and was promoted to the rank of Major General after 1945.
Heliodor Píka was rehabilitated posthumously in 1968.

And as usual, Bret was also kind enough to send me the First Day commemorative sheet above about that same stamp!

"Railway bridges" stamp set on FDC from Taiwan

On June 9, 2017, the Chunghwa Post of Taiwan put into circulation a nice series of 4 stamps devoted to different railway bridges on the island.
Thank you very much George for this beautiful letter below, with special postmark of the first day of issue (different from the official FDC cancellation) including this complete series!
I am not 100% sure but it seems that this postmark refers to the 130th anniversary of the creation of the Taiwan Railway Administration. It was released by a Taipei railway main station's temporary post office.
The stamp on the top right (NT $ 5) shows the Youkeng Bridge located on the Pingxi Line (13 km long, north of the country), between the Sandiaoling and Dahua stations. This bridge, the only one in Taiwan with a "fish belly" curve, is normally used by diesel powered trains, but also, for special occasions, by steam locomotives, as it's the case on that stamp.

The other NT $ 5 stamp is dedicated to the Dongshan River Bridge, located on the Yilan line (95 km long, northeast of the country), between the Luodong and Dongshan stations. This bridge was renovated by the Taiwan Railway Administration in the 1990s and today has a blue structure evoking mountains. The Taroko Express train is illustrated on this bridge, above the Lanyang plain.
The upper left-hand stamp (NT $ 12) shows the Carp Pond Bridge built on the Jingshan River, part of the Taichung line (85 km long, northwest coast of the country), consisting of a series of long span arches (the longest bridge of this type in Taiwan). A typical electric train with its "smiling face" locomotive is shown on that stamp.
The last stamp (NT $ 12) is devoted to the Da-an River Bridge, also located on the Taichung line, between the Sanyi and Tai-an stations, connecting in the north to the tunnel No. 2 and the Tai-an viaduct to the south. A Puyuma Express train is featured on that stamp.

Merci beaucoup Johan !
On June 10, 2017 (preview sale in Ekeren), the Belgian Post bpost put into circulation an interesting sheetlet of 10 stamps honoring the 10 Belgian winners of the Tour de France (first edition in 1903), winning a total of 18 editions (between 1912 and 1976).
Created by designer Pieter Willems (Pjotr), this sheetlet was printed in 71,193 copies.
One of the stamps (domestic tariff "1" for a standard letter up to 50g - € 0.74 currently) of this sheetlet was used on the special cover below, with FDC cancellation from Brussels of June 12, 2017. Thank you very much Johan!

The 10 Belgian winners of the Tour de France (the 104th edition of this year passed through Belgium on 2 and 3 July 2017) are therefore in the spotlight on this sheetlet and its yellow background (the color of the winner's distinctive jersey), from 1912 (victory of Odiel Defraeye) to 1976 (victory of Lucien Van Impe), passing of course by the "Cannibal" Eddy Merckx, 5 times winner (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974).
The stamp above is devoted to Sylvère Maes (1909-1966), winner of the Tour de France in 1936 and 1939, later sporting director of the Belgian national team between 1950 and 1957.

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) m/s on cover from Hungary

As usual, on May 5, 2017, the Hungarian Post put into circulation its series of two EUROPA stamps in the form of a souvenir sheet containing 4 stamps (2 of each), illustrating this year the theme of castles ("kastélyok" in Hungarian).
Designed by Eszter Domé, this souvenir sheet (print run : 70,000) was used to frank the pretty letter below sent on June 12, 2017 from the village of Gencsapáti (west of the country near the Austrian border).
Thank you very much John!
The nominal value of these two stamps (335 HUF) corresponds to a standard letter up to 20g sent to Europe).
The two castles in the spotlight on this series are the Andrássy castle in Tiszadob and the Nádasdy castle in Nádasdladány, the margins of the souvenir sheet evoking the English garden and Festetics castle (classical style, early 19th century) in Dég.

More than 2000 castles and mansions have been registered in Hungary, including this Andrássy castle (stamp with blue background) located in Tiszadob in the north-east of the country (Andrássy refers to a former family of the Hungarian aristocracy).
This castle was built between 1886 and 1890 (architect : Arthur Meinig) in a Hungarian romantic style similar to the Vajdahunyad castle in Budapest, combining the characteristics of several Transylvanian castles.
According to legend, the building reflects the year by having 4 entrances for the 4 seasons, 12 towers for the 12 months, 52 rooms for the 52 weeks, and 365 panes of glass for the 365 days!
Nádasdy castle is located in the village of Nádasdladány, not far from the northeast coast of Lake Balaton.
A symbol of the influence and power of the noble Nádasdy family for centuries, this castle was built for Count Ferenc Nádasdy between 1873 and 1880 (architect : István Linzbauer) in the spirit of 16th-century English and Scottish architectural traditions.

A big thank you Slavek for this nice letter posted on June 7, 2017 from the post office of Prague 33, located on the Jiřího z Poděbrad square !
The main building of this square, inaugurated in 1896 and formerly known as "King George square", is the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Our Lord ("Kostel nejsvětějšího srdce Páně" in Czech) featured in the lower part of the postmark.

The façade of this same church, the most important sacred buildings constructed in Bohemia in the 20th century, is also featured on the coupon attached to the stamp above (32 CZK), also issued on June 7, 2017, devoted to the Slovenian architect of this religious edifice, Jože Plečnik (1872-1957).
This church was built between 1928 and 1932 in a style in the margins of modern movements, inspired by the temples of ancient Egypt and early Christian basilicas.
As a reminder, this stamp has been put into circulation in a souvenir sheet composed of two stamps separated by this coupon.
