Le thème retenu cette année pour la 22ème édition de l'exposition philatélique internationale d'Essen (organisée du 12 au 14 avril 2012) était le football.
L'occasion de célébrer les exploits de l'équipe d'Allemagne (la "Mannschaft"), l'engouement populaire lors de la Coupe du Monde de football 2006 en Allemagne ainsi que le prochain championnat d'Europe de football 2012.
Le 12 avril 2012, la Deutsche Post a émis une série de 3 timbres de bienfaisance "Für den Sport" consacrés à de grands évènements sportifs : les jeux olympiques de Londres, les championnats du monde de tennis de table à Dortmund et le championnat d'Europe de football.

The opportunity to celebrate the exploits of the German team (the "Mannschaft"), the popular craze during the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany as well as the upcoming European Football Championship 2012.
On April 12, 2012, the Deutsche Post has issued a series of three charity "Für den Sport" stamps dedicated to great sporting events : the Olympic Games in London, the Table Tennis World Championships in Dortmund and the European Football Championship.
C'est le visuel de ce dernier timbre (0,55€ + 0,25€) qui figure sur l'entier postal ci-dessus émis spécialement lors de cette exposition philatélique d'Essen.

Ce timbre a été conçu par Jens Müller et Karen Weiland à partir d'une intéressante photographie aérienne de Pedro Citoler montrant une rencontre de football.
A noter que, contrairement au timbre à date spécial, ce timbre ne mentionne pas spécifiquement ce 14ème championnat d'Europe de football organisé du 8 juin au 1er juillet 2012 en Pologne et en Ukraine.
L'équipe d'Allemagne sera à nouveau une des favorites, avec peut-être l'Espagne et les Pays-Bas. L'Allemagne est le pays ayant remporté le plus d'éditions (3) et ayant participé le plus de fois (11) !

This stamp was designed by Jens Müller and Karen Weiland from an interesting aerial photograph by Pedro Citoler showing a football match.
To note that contrary to the special postmark, this stamp does not specifically mention this 14th European Football Championship held from June 8th to July 1st 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.
The German team will again be a favorite, with maybe Spain and the Netherlands. Germany is the country that has won the greatest number of editions (3) and that has participated the most times (11) !
